Book excerpt: The durability of infrastructure components, such as prestressed concrete bridge beams, can be significantly affected by long-term deterioration associated with corrosion. Corrosion is a major concern for bridges in Virginia, due to the frequent use of deicing salts during the winter, as well as the number of structures in marine environments. The residual capacity of corrosion damaged prestressed I-beams and box beams needs to be accurately estimated to determine if damaged bridges need to be posted, and to help with making informed decisions related to repair, rehabilitation and replacement of damaged bridges. This report presents the results of testing of six corrosion-damaged prestressed beams removed from existing bridges during their demolition. Three beams were Type II AASHTO I-beams extracted from the Lesner Bridge in Virginia Beach, and three were 48 in wide by 27 in deep box beams extracted from the Aden Road Bridge near Quantico, Virginia. Prior to testing, the beams were visually inspected and two types of non-destructive evaluations were performed to identify corrosion activity: resistivity measurements and half-cell potential measurements. The beams were then tested in the lab to determine their flexural strength. Following testing, samples of strand were removed and tested to determine their tensile properties. Cores were taken from the Aden Road beams and from both the beams and decks of the Lesner Bridge beams to determine compressive strength. Powdered concrete samples were removed to perform chloride concentration tests. The tested strengths of the beams were compared to calculated strengths using two methods for damage estimation and two different calculation approaches. The methods for damage estimation relied exclusively on visual inspections; one was the set of methods recommended by Naito et al. (2010), while the second was a modified method developed in this study from the current tests. The two calculation approaches were a strain compatibility method and the AASHTO LRFD method. Overall, the results yielded reasonable estimates of residual strength, except for one of the box beams that was discovered to have considerable water within the hollow cells. The final recommendations are that bridge inspectors develop detailed damage maps of corrosion-damaged beams, and that load raters use the Naito et al. method to get a conservative estimate of damage for both box beams and I-beams. Either method for calculating strength is valid, however the AASHTO LRFD method is simpler.

Ferguson Structural Engineering Laboratory (FSEL) located at The University of Texas at Austin, the anchorage controlled shear capacity of prestressed concrete bridge girders was in this research studied in two distinct ways, experimentally and analytically. The results of this research are an important step towards improving understanding of strand anchorage related issues. For the experimental program, two full-scale Tx46 prestressed concrete bridge girders were fabricated at FSEL. The Tx46 girders were topped with a concrete, composite deck. Both ends of the two girders were instrumented and tested. For the analytical program, a new Anchorage Evaluation Database (AEDB) was developed, by filtering and expanding the University of Texas Prestressed Concrete Shear Database (UTPCSDB), and then evaluated. The AEDB contained 72 shear tests, of which 25 were anchorage failures and 47 were shear failures. The results and analysis from the experimental and analytical programs generated the following three main conclusions: (1) A reasonable percentage of debonding in Tx Girders does not have a marked impact on girder shear capacity calculated using the 2010 AASHTO LRFD General Procedure. (2) The AASHTO anchorage equation is conservative but not accurate. In other words, this equation cannot be used to accurately differentiate between a shear failure and an anchorage failure. In regards to conservativeness, anchorage failures in AASHTO-type girders may lead to unconservative results with respect to the 2010 AASHTO LRFD General Procedure. (3) The 2010 AASHTO anchorage resistance model and its corresponding equation do not apply to Tx Girders. Because of the Tx Girders' wider bottom flange, cracks do not propagate across the strands as they do in AASHTO-type girders. This fact yields overly conservative results for Tx Girders with respect to AASHTO Equation 5.8.3.5-1. In summary, this research uncovered the short-sided nature of the AASHTO anchorage design method. Given its short-comings, there is an obvious need for a validated, comprehensive, and rational approach to anchorage design that considers strength and serviceability. To appropriately develop this method, additional full-scale experimental testing is needed to expand the AEDB, as currently there are not enough tests to distinguish major, general trends and variables. Any future additional research would be expected to further validate and expand the significant findings that this research has produced and so take the next step toward safer, more-efficient bridge designs.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The FRP systems varied in material types, laminate properties, application procedures, reinforcing schemes, and repair design procedures and assumptions. The specimens were tested to failure to determine moment and shear capacities, as well as deformation and ductility behavior of the undamaged, damaged, and repaired girders. Through experimental and analytical comparisons of the behavior of the repaired girders to the undamaged girder, the specific FRP systems were evaluated for acceptance to the FDOT Quality Products List. The FRP systems were evaluated structurally based on their ability to restore the undamaged shear and moment capacity of the prestressed concrete girder, type of failure mode, cost of repair system including installation, and ease of installation.

Book excerpt: Many conventionally reinforced concrete deck girder (RCDG) bridges were built in the US during the 1950s, throughout the expansion of the Interstate System. Designs followed the AASHO standard of the time, which permitted higher shear stress in concrete and reduced detailing requirements than permitted by current specifications. Many of these bridges exhibit diagonal cracking of the main girders and bent caps that has been attributed to the design as well as increased traffic volume and truck load magnitudes, and temperature and shrinking effects. While these RCDG bridges are nearing the end of their design lives, wholesale replacements or renewals are not possible due to the large numbers of bridges, and many remain in service. In order to develop a methodology for assessment of vintage RCDG bridge bent caps, a total of six realistic full-scale replicas of in-service bent caps with 1950s vintage details, including the overall geometry, reinforcement configuration, and material properties were constructed for laboratory tests. The test specimens were a subassemblage of the pertinent bridge components at the bent cap region including the integral columns, cap beam, and portions of the monolithic internal girders that frame into the cap. Test variables included shear span-to-depth (a/d) ratio, number of flexural bars anchored in the columns, flexural reinforcement cut-off locations, web reinforcement size and grade, and loading type (static and fatigue loading). The bent caps were loaded indirectly, similar to their in-field counterparts, via portions of the integral girders. The specimens were loaded to failure using an incremental cyclic load protocol. To simulate the effect of 50 years of ambient traffic loading, 1,000,000 cycles of fatigue loading, based on a unique load protocol derived from in-situ measured stress ranges from three in-service bridges, was applied to one of the specimens prior to failure testing. Various analytical methods were applied to the laboratory specimens for capacity prediction, including ACI 318 shear design methods, the Modified Compression Field Theory (MCFT) sectional analysis approach, strut-and-tie models, mechanical models, and non-linear finite element analysis. The embedded reinforcement at the anchorage zone, the web reinforcement, and the a/d ratio were all found to be pertinent parameters which affect the strength of bent cap specimens. High cycle fatigue did not cause a significant degradation in the ultimate capacity for a specimen with light web reinforcement, although debonding of the stirrups was observed at the characteristic diagonal crack vicinity. Best results for capacity prediction were achieved with non-linear finite element analysis and with The Modified Zararis Mechanical Model. Further finite element analyses showed that strength of specimens with heavy web reinforcement may be more sensitive to the effects of bond fatigue.

Book excerpt: American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) classified 9.1% of the national bridges as structurally deficient in 2017. Several of the deficient concrete bridges have girder serviceability issues such as excessive cracking and deflection. Traditional external post-tensioning techniques involve high management of traffic costs and use of heavy construction equipment. To that end, a novel rapid post-tensioning technique using unbonded near-surface mounted shape-memory alloy (SMA) wires was herein evaluated. The suggested method relies on the intrinsic ability of the SMA to recover seemingly permanent deformation upon activation via heating. Mechanical characterization tests demonstrated that the SMA wires can generate 67 ksi of prestress. Within the range of SMA reinforcement ratios considered in this study (up to 0.17%), the structural-scale tests showed that post-tensioning of cracked reinforced concrete girders can reduce the crack width and residual midspan deflection by up to 370 ℗æm (74%) and 0.06 in. (49%), respectively, and increase the ultimate moment capacity up to 83 kip-ft (45%). Finite element model of post-tensioned girders was developed in a damage mechanics framework and was validated against experimental data - the predicted yield and ultimate moment of the strengthened girders were 14% less than those observed in the experiments. The difference was due to the cumulative effect of errors embedded in the model assumptions. The model was used to evaluate the service and ultimate behavior of strengthened girders over a range of variables such as the extent of cracking in concrete, SMA reinforcement ratio, interaction between SMA and concrete (unbonded vs. bonded), and effective prestress in SMA. The partial loss of prestress due to elastic shortening of concrete is insignificant (

Book excerpt: Due to frequent accidental damage to prestressed concrete (P/C) bridges caused by impact from overheight vehicles, a project was initiated to evaluate the strength and load distribution characteristics of damaged P/C bridges. A comprehensive literature review was conducted. It was concluded that only a few references pertain to the assessment and repair of damaged P/C beams. No reference was found that involves testing of a damaged bridge(s) as well as the damaged beams following their removal. Structural testing of 2 damaged bridges was conducted in the field.

Book excerpt: Every year several prestressed concrete (P/C) girder bridges are damaged by overheight vehicles. Traditional P/C girder repair strategies include beam replacement, internal strand splices, external post-tensioning, and welded steel jackets. Unfortunately, these types of repairs are both labor intensive and vulnerable to future corrosion. One possible alternative to these traditional repair techniques is to repair/strengthen impact damaged P/C girders with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP). These types of materials have the advantage of large strength/weight ratios, excellent corrosion/fatigue properties, and are relatively simple to install. This report describes the experimental results from three full-sized P/C beams that were intentionally damaged to simulate vehicle impacts, repaired, and tested. Damage consisted of removing concrete from the bottom flange and severing a number of prestressing strands. The beams were strengthened/repaired by patching the bottom flange and installing multiple layers unidirectional CFRP to restore the original flexural capacity. CFRP fibers were also used in the transverse direction to help confine the patch material and to prevent premature debonding of the longitudinal sheets. Service level and ultimate load tests were conducted to determine the effectiveness of CFRP strengthening system. A theoretical analysis of the strengthened/repaired beams was also completed. In addition to the full-size beams, a number of smaller specimens were also used to address durability and environmental concerns related to the use CFRP on bridge structures.
