Book excerpt: This study focused on the multi-faceted process of leadership identity development through an-in dpeth analyis of the life experiences of students involved in Greek life at a mid-size researched institution in the Souther United States region. Research was conducted within the framerwork of the Leadership Identity Development (LID) model authored by Komives, Owen, Longerbem, Mainella, and Osteen (2005). Of particular interest was the degree to which the data upheld the presence of the four development influences of the LID model : 1) peer influences 2) meaningful involvement 3) reflective learning and 4) adult influence.Framed by an understanding of college student development and emerging explanatations of the process of leadership identity development, the qualitiative study examined the influence of fraternity and sorority membership on the leadership identity development of college students. The findings derived from semi-structure interviews with fraternity and sorority leaders illustrate the context and cultures in which the particapants develop an identity as an leader. In addition, the study describes the processes and experiences that facilitate or hinder development.Nominated by student affairs professionals, twelve undergraduate fraternity and sorority members at one southern U.S. research institution particapated in the study. The findings suggest organizational factors and meaningful relationships support leader identity development ofr fraternity and sorority members. The study also suggests advancing practical applications of the theoretical construct of leadership identity development. The study concludes with recommendations for program development, practice, and further research. .

The higher education research literature focuses on the leadership development of White males primarily, without examining the Experiential Learning component of a college education with regard to leadership outcomes. Most studies on leadership in higher education use a quantitative approach with leadership survey instruments. Using an interpretive research paradigm and building on previous research literature examining leadership identity in college students, the researcher asked six female college graduates about the role of Experiential Learning in their leadership identity. The students' four year-end legacy papers from their leadership program were examined as well. The data revealed that Undergraduate Leadership, Volunteer Service, Study Abroad, and Internships had a positive impact on leadership outcomes for the participants. Ultimately, this study revealed that this style of learning did facilitate leadership identity in female students who might not otherwise have reached full leadership identity due to their initial perceptions of leaders as being central, positional, and authoritative rather than approaching leadership as shared, collaborative, and relational."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

This study explored the relationship between peer leadership roles and transformational learning. The study was shaped by four research questions: 1) How do college students who engage in peer leadership roles describe their experiences? 2) How do these student leaders make meaning of their experience? 3) What processes help student leaders make meaning of their peer leadership role? 4) What knowledge, skills, and abilities do participants report having gained as a result of their peer leadership role? Participants included 16 college students who were engaged in peer leadership activities. Learning from exposure to diverse peer interactions; identity exploration and reconciliation; enhanced personal, professional, and academic development; community responsibility as leaders; and lack of institutional support emerged as the central themes of this study.
