Book excerpt: This thesis examines the impact of different experiences of mutual fund managers on fund risk and return characteristics. After controlling for time, fund and manager fixed effects, two major manager experience effects are identified. First, a higher manager career length, or alternatively a higher number of experienced recessions, leads to decreasing fund returns, skill and performance, joined by increased risk. Career concerns of mutual fund managers and incentive-based theories can provide an explanation hereon. Secondly, managers are sustainably affected from starting their career during a recession or bear market period. Funds managed by such recession managers exhibit significantly lower risk in form of volatility, value at risk and market as well as downside beta measures. This is in line with the previously identified impact of macroeconomic experiences on risk-taking by individuals and CEOs. Again, incentive-based theories and career concerns can provide a possible explanation.

Book excerpt: This study uses a survivorship-bias free dataset spanning more than 80 years to identify the best mutual fund managers having tenure of ten years or more. We also examine the relationship between performance and tenure in a sample of 289 solo managers of 355 actively managed funds within the nine Morningstar styles. We find an inverse relationship between average annual returns and tenure, even after controlling for structural changes in mutual fund returns after 1996. The managers who survived more than ten years were likely to have performed at or above the market in their first three years, while their peers who did not survive as solo managers beyond three years significantly underperformed the market. Finally, while each of the very best managers generated positive compound annual market-adjusted returns following their first three years, the majority were not able to maintain their early levels of performance. This evidence is not indicative of a positive relationship between experience and performance.

We hypothesize that managers who worked as industry analysts exhibit superior stock-picking skills, while managers with a background as macro analysts are more skillful in timing the market. Bootstrap analyses suggest that the significant difference in performance between these two types of managers cannot be attributed purely to luck.
