Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exhibition of Contemporary German Art: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; January, 1909 All European countries possessing a vigorous artistic life have been the arenas of fierce, frequently passionate strug gles during the last twenty years. An age which hurried along so restlessly and with such strides in all other directions, which brought with it such a complete revolution in theviews of life, could not abide by the comfortable, uniform pace of former times in the path of Art. There was a long, almost too long, period of fermentation and Art in its fresh youth in Germany seems to have passed through all the childish ailments conceivable. The danger was imminent that much of what was real and good in the last period would be thrown overboard with the old and dead and above all that the careful training in drawing would be lost entirely. There was perhaps no age in which such a lack of reverence was dis played. The right direction, however, was taken in time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German and Flemish Masters: In the National Gallery The important and interesting collections of German and Flemish pictures in the National Gallery have scarcely received the special study which has been accorded so often to the rival schools of Italy. They have never, perhaps, been treated as a whole, nor in that intimate relation to one another which their early history demands. The literature connected with German and Flemish art is indeed extensive and increasing. Since the remarkable Exhibition held at Bruges in 1902 the early Flemish painters in particular have been subjected to the most careful and critical examination, and much that was before cloudy and vague has been defined, while many new problems have arisen. No attempt has been made in this volume to enter upon the more controversial aspects of the subject. The vexed question of attributions is after all of secondary importance to the intrinsic beauty of the pictures. The writer's object has been to trace the development of these schools through the examples in our Gallery, and to sum up in regard to them the results of the most recent criticism, acknowledging here the debt due to the indefatigable researches of writers both in this country and abroad. This book was released on 2009-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 10th July 1938, the second annual Great German Art Exhibition opened at the House of German Art in Munich, one of the eight exhibitions staged annually until 1944. Participation in one of these Great German Art Exhibitions was almost indispensable for an artist's reputation in Germany. The official arts magazines and general press reviewed almost exclusively artists who had been exhibited in the Munich show. Several thousand works of art had been submitted for the exhibition and only a few hundred went on show. The president of the Reich Culture Chamber, Adolf Ziegler, supervised the selection of paintings, while the sculptors Arno Breker and Josef Wackerle were responsible for the sculptures. There were no formal criteria. The selection was based on Hitler's taste and on that of the judges. This rare original of the Great German Art Exhibition Catalogue 1938 has been faithfully reproduced by World Propaganda Classics and is part of a series of historical reprints carefully selected to show how art and literature throughout the ages have been used for political purposes. The reprint of this rare book will be welcomed by scholars of the period as an indispensable primary source offering a valuable perspective on the formation and development of Nazi ideology.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to an Exhibition of Drawings and Sketches by the Old Masters: Principally From the Malcolm Collection, and of the Engravings of the Early German and Italian Schools, in the Print and Drawing Gallery The examples belonging to the Malcolm collection are in the proportion of about two to one to those belonging to the Museum, and are distinguished by a stamp on the mounts bearing the collector's name and crest. In the following guide they are further identified by the letter M within brackets, followed by a number referring to the catalogue of the collection compiled by Sir J. C. Robinson (zud cd., 1876, privately printed). The progress made since the date of that publication in the exact study and comparison of the drawings of Old Masters has led, however, to the adoption of new names in many cases. Care has been taken, so far as possible, to place before students grounds and opportunity for judging moot questions of attribution and art-history for themselves. Book excerpt: Hitler's Day of German Art 1939 provides a unique inside into the very little known celebrations which took place at each opening of the annual Great German Art Exhibition from 1937 to 1944 usually during the month of July. The celebrations of the Day of German Art lasted three days and always began on a Friday. The last day, a Sunday, was the climax of these celebrations. On this day the Great German Art Exhibition was opened in the House of German Art and a large procession entitled 2,000 years of German Culture moved through the streets of Munich. This procession was meant to give insight into German history, legends and myths and how they are linked to the Third Reich. This reprint of the exhibition catalogue will be welcomed by scholars of the period as an indispensable primary source offering a valuable perspective on the formation and development of Nazi ideology.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from German Educational Exhibition, World's Fair St. Louis 1904: Universities and Other Scientific Institutions Academies of the Fatherland and of other countries, mainly owing to German influence, have joined forces in an Inter national Association of Academies. As a supplement to the literary work of the Academies, some specimens of the various excavations at present being undertaken by Germany have been placed on exhibition. They cannot, nor are they meant to, give even an approximate re presentation of the success of these researches; they nevertheless give a hint of the manifold nature of the efforts put forth in this sphere of science. The restoration of the Saalburg, the most important of the old Roman citadels still extant on German soil, is the only case in which a complete picture of the whole is presented to the eye by means of models, imitations and plans of the discoveries made, and this fact is due only to the initiative of His Majesty the Emperor, whose protecting hand guided the restoration works to their completion.
