Provenance research into the catalogued exhibits has enabled a full reconstruction of the show for the first time: its contents and form, its contributors and their motivations, and its impact both in Britain and internationally. Presenting the research via six case-study exhibits, the book sheds new light on the exhibition and reveals it as one of the largest émigré projects of the period, which drew contributions from scores of German émigré collectors, dealers, art critics, and from the ‘degenerate’ artists themselves. The book explores the show’s potency as an anti-Nazi statement, which prompted a direct reaction from Hitler himself.

These dialogues enabled each of them to stake out his own position and provided the impetus driving their exchange. While Macke's art referred directly to the world he saw around him, his images deriving their authenticity from the sensual presence of that world, Marc sought to arrive at a spiritual understanding of the world and strove to develop art forms that would render visible the unity of being in his pictures. Divided into several sections, the exhibition traces the development of both artists from 1910 onward : from their first encounters in Tegernsee, Sindelsdorf, and later Bonn, to their early preoccupation with the theory of color, their work within the Blue Rider, and their participation in important exhibitions, such as those staged by the Cologne Sonderbund and the Erster Deutscher Herbstsalon. In its portrayal of the journeys they undertook together, their reciprocal visits and gifts, and the execution of arts and crafts works, the exhibition also attests to the key role played in their deepening friendship by the two artists' wives, Elisabeth Macke and Maria Marc. When it was written, however, German Expressionism seemed like an eccentric manifestation far removed from what was then considered the mainstream of modern art. But as historians well know, each generation alters the concept of mainstream to encompass those aspects of the past which seem most relevant to the present. The impact of German Expressionism on the art and thought of later generations could never have been anticipated at the time of the original writing of this book. During the subsequent years an enormous body of scholarly research and an even larger number of popular books on German expressionist art has been printed. Numerous monographs and detailed studies on most of the artists exist now and countless exhibitions with accompanying catalogues have taken place. Much of this new research could have been incorporated in a revised edition and the bibliography certainly could have been greatly expanded to include the important writings which have been published in Germany, the United States and elsewhere since this book was originally issued. The author, however, was faced with the choice of reprinting the original text with only the most necessary alterations-such as updating the captions to indicate present locations of the paintings-or the preparation of a revised text and bibliography. Desirable as a revision appeared, present printing costs would have priced the paperback out of reach for students. It is for this reason that I decided to reissue the original text which stands on its own as a primary investigation of German Expressionist Painting.
