Netsuke are superb miniature carvings, usually less than two inches high, that have been created by Japanese artists for over three hundred years. During that time, they have portrayed almost every aspect of life and culture in Japan. These tiny carvings were traditionally used to prevent the cord attached to a gentleman's medicine box or tobacco pouch from slipping through the belt of his kimono. Today they are highly collectible works of art. Netsuke: Japanese Life and Legend in Miniature presents over seventy full-page color photographs of netsuke in enchanting settings. The accompanying text gives technical details about the netsuke as well as interesting commentaries relating the pieces to Japanese life and legend. Information on the carvers has also been provided whenever possible.

Book excerpt: The private collection of 80 inrō, ojime and netsuke presented here was donated to the Museum for Lacquer Art in 2017. The wealth of objects reproduces plants and animals with symbolic significance, literary subjects, historical scenes and famous landscape scenarios - and thus presents an image of Japan in miniature. An inrō, meaning "seal container" in English, is a small, flat stackable box which a Japanese man in a kimono could carry on the silk belt slung around his hips. This gem was invented in the late sixteenth century, and before long numerous workshops were specialised in its production. The donation of a private collector to the Museum for Lacquer Art includes 80 inrō with a variety of decorative techniques and shows a wide range of artistically designed motifs. This new acquisition of astounding quality and diversity has been knowledgeably compiled in this inventory catalogue by Heinz and Else Kress.

Book excerpt: The figures and mythical creatures portrayed in Michael Birch's carvings range from sensuous, voluptuous figures through abstractions of animals and geometric forms to his very personal interpretations of Japanese myths and legends. Sometimes amusing - sometimes alarming, but always superbly realised artistic pieces carved from some of the most challenging, resilient natural materials available. This monograph on artist Michael Birch presents the widest range of his work available in one volume. The book gives an overall survey of a multi-talented creative artist, taking an unusual approach to illuminate the motivation behind the design and carving of netsuke. Extensive use is made of the artist's comments and letters to collectors as well as quotations from fellow artists, major collectors and connoisseurs. Over 150 pieces have been specially photographed for this book to show in intricate detail the subtlety of carving as well as the inspired uses of a wide range of rare and beautiful natural materials.

Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive study of the inro, the small lacquer container used by Japanese men wearing traditional dress to carry items in daily use, drawing on the V&A's collection. Suspended from the belt by means of a netsuke and originally intended to hold a seal and ink or a supply of medicines, the inro gradually developed as a highly decorative dress accessory and became an object of high fashion, which is now prized by collectors. The majority of inro were made of lacquer, and include some of the finest and most innovative examples of the Japanese lacquerer's craft. The book traces the diverse origins of the inro from around 1600 until the early-20th century, and includes sections on construction and techniques of manufacture, on materials used, as well as on individual craftsmen, with photographs of their signatures. The sources of inro designs are explored, from paintings, ukiyoe prints and woodblock-printed books, with many examples illustrated. Methods of dating are also discussed, making this a useful reference for collectors and experts, while those with a general interest in Japanese art should be drawn to the craftsmanship of the individual pieces.

Book excerpt: A specialist in Asian art at Sotheby's, Mason presents a very useful introduction to a complicated subject. He begins with an essay on the history of Asia, which despite its brevity will be useful for the collector targeted by this book. Individual chapters range from ceramics and metalwork to prints, paintings, and textiles; the chapter on "The Artisan and Craftsman" examines the quality, condition, and authenticity of works in areas such as arms, armor, glass, ivory, and jewelry. The book contains appendixes of chronological tables and major marks on Chinese and Japanese works of art, as well as an index and a fine bibliography. The narrative does not confuse readers new to the subject with excessive detail, and the photographs are clear and very instructive. A beautiful book at a reasonable price, this volume contains an amazing wealth of information on a very broad subject. Recommended for both public and academic libraries.-Martin Chasin, Adult Inst., Bridgeport, CT Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
