Book excerpt: Bridging the gap between concepts derived from Second Law of Thermodynamics and their application to Engineering practice, the property exergy and the exergy balance can be a tool for analyzing and improving the performance of energy conversion processes. With the exergy analysis it is possible to evaluate the performance of energy conversion processes not only on a thermodynamics basis but also by including production costs and environmental aspects and impacts of the studied processes. This comprehensive approach of the use of energy has, as one of the most important feature, the identification of sustainable ways of energy resources utilization. Based on the fundamentals of the exergy concept, its calculation, graphical representations and exergy balances evaluation, Exergy: Production Cost And Renewability describes the application of detailed exergy and thermoeconomic analysis to power plants and polygeneration systems, petroleum production and refining plants (including hydrogen production), chemical plants, biofuel production routes, combined production of ethanol and electricity, aircraft systems design, environmental impact mitigation processes and human body behavior. The presented case studies aim at providing students, researchers and engineers with guidelines to the utilization of the exergy and thermoeconomic analysis to model, simulate and optimize real processes and industrial plants.

Book excerpt: The simultaneous operation of all systems generating, moving, or removing heat on an aircraft is simulated using integrated analysis which is called Integrated Energy System Analysis (IESA) for this book. Its purpose is to understand, optimize, and validate more efficient system architectures for removing or harvesting the increasing amounts of waste heat generated in commercial and military aircraft. In the commercial aircraft industry IESA is driven by the desire to minimize airplane operating costs associated with increased system weight, power consumption, drag, and lost revenue as cargo space is devoted to expanded cooling systems. In military aircraft thermal IESA is also considered to be a key enabler for the successful implementation of the next generation jet fighter weapons systems and countermeasures. This book contains a selection of papers relevant to aircraft thermal management IESA published by SAE International. They cover both recently developed government and industry- funded thermal management IESA such as the Integrated Vehicle Energy Technology (INVENT) program, and older published papers still relevant today which address modeling approaches.

Book excerpt: In M.S. thesis #1, advantages of applying exergy-based analysis and optimization methods to the synthesis/design and operation of aircraft systems is demonstrated using a supersonic aircraft fighter flown over an entire mission. A first set of optimizations involving four objectives (two energy-based and two exergy-based) are performed with only propulsion and environmental control subsystem degrees of freedom. Losses for the airframe subsystem are not incorporated into the two exergy-based objectives. The results show that, as expected, all four objectives globally produce the same optimum vehicle. A second set of optimizations is then performed with airframe degrees of freedom. However, this time one of the exergy-based objectives incorporates airframe losses directly into the objective. The results are that this latter objective produces a significantly better optimum vehicle. Thus, an exergy-based approach is not only able to pinpoint where the greatest inefficiencies in the system occur but seems to produce a superior optimum vehicle as well by accounting for irreversibility losses in subsystems only indirectly tied to fuel usage. No studies to date of which we are aware demonstrate the technology through an entire mission in which multiple flight conditions and constraints are encountered. Consequently, in M.S. theses #2 and #3, a formal Mach 6 through Mach 10 flight envelope is explored which includes cruise, acceleration/climb, deceleration/descend and turn mission segments. An exergy approach to the vehicle synthesis/design, in which trade-offs between dissimilar technologies are observed, is proposed and measured against traditional energy-based methods of assessing highly integrated systems. The mission-level analysis provides much insight into the dynamics of mission-level hypersonic flight and demonstrates the usefulness of an exergy destruction minimization measure for highly integrated synthesis/design.

Book excerpt: The reduction of the environmental footprint of aviation requires the development of more efficient aircraft. Emergent technologies in aircraft systems, such as more-electrical aircraft, are potential enablers for the next generation of aircraft. To support the adoption of these new technologies and to tackle the underlying integration challenges, aircraft system architectures need to be considered earlier in the aircraft design process, specifically within the conceptual design stage. To deal with the complexity and to make the system architecture development process more efficient and effective, a key enabler is to improve the representation of system architectures early in the design process. Introducing better architecture representations removes ambiguity and allows engineers to develop a shared understanding of the system. Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) has emerged as a systematic methodology to address complexity in systems design and overcome the drawbacks of the traditional paper based systems engineering approach used in aircraft development. This thesis investigates the use of the ARCADIA/Capella MBSE environment for the representation and specification of aircraft systems architecture in conceptual design. This thesis includes survey on the needs for system architecture representations in conceptual design. A methodology is developed within Capella to create architecture representations that are suitable for use in conceptual design. The primary flight control systems (PFCS), which by extension also includes the associated power systems, is selected to illustrate the proposed methodology. The proposed methodology consists of capturing architectural features such as interfaces, exchanges and variability. A catalog of modelling artifacts representing the various flight control actuation technologies at system level, logical and physical level has been developed. These elements can be combined to define any primary flight control system architecture. The model-based specification addresses the need to define rapidly many architecture variants for conventional and more-electrical technologies. The developed methodology is applicable to other aircraft systems. Overall, this work is an initial step towards introducing MBSE earlier in the aircraft development process thereby making it more efficient and responsive to the emerging needs of aircraft development.

Book excerpt: Current industry trends demonstrate aircraft electrification will be part of future platforms in order to achieve higher levels of efficiency in various vehicle level sub-systems. However electrification requires a substantial change in aircraft design that is not suitable for re-winged or re-engined applications as some aircraft manufacturers are opting for today. Thermal limits arise as engine cores progressively get smaller and hotter to improve overall engine efficiency[8], while legacy systems still demand a substantial amount of pneumatic, hydraulic and electric power extraction. The environmental control system (ECS) provides pressurization, ventilation and air conditioning in commercial aircraft[7], making it the main heat sink for all aircraft loads with exception of the engine. To mitigate the architecture thermal limits in an efficient manner, the form in which the ECS interacts with the engine will have to be enhanced as to reduce the overall energy consumed and achieve an energy optimized solution. This study examines a tradeoff analysis of an electric ECS by use of a fully integrated Numerical Propulsion Simulation System (NPSS) model that is capable of studying the interaction between the ECS and the engine cycle deck. It was found that a peak solution lays in a hybrid ECS where it utilizes the correct balance between a traditional pneumatic and a fully electric system. This intermediate architecture offers a substantial improvement in aircraft fuel consumptions due to a reduced amount of waste heat and customer bleed in exchange for partial electrification of the air-conditions pack which is a viable option for re-winged applications.

Book excerpt: A modeling and simulation based methodology is proposed that introduces the new capability to conduct rapidly consistent and integrated power system architecture trade-off studies at aircraft level in the preliminary design phase of civil aircraft. Conventional and new architectures (e.g. more electric, bleed-less) can be built and analyzed rapidly, sensitivity studies are enabled. A methodology based on the formalization of a parametric power system architecture sizing process combined with a performance analysis process is developed. Dedicated function-based models integrating the operational space (time dependence, failure and degraded modes) are proposed and a modular structure enabling a multi-level modeling approach is elaborated. Three applications illustrate the new capabilities introduced by the developed simulation framework prototype: the aircraft level comparison of different architectures, the electric generator sizing synthesis and the link of power systems simulation to an aircraft global thermal model.

Book excerpt: This SAE Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) discusses design philosophy, system and equipment requirements, environmental conditions, and design considerations for rotorcraft environmental control systems (ECS). The rotorcraft ECS comprises that arrangement of equipment, controls, and indicators which supply and distribute dehumidified conditioned air for ventilation, cooling and heating of the occupied compartments, and cooling of the avionics. The principal features of the system are: aA controlled fresh air supply bA means for cooling (air or vapor cycle units and heat exchangers) cA means for removing excess moisture from the air supply dA means for heating eA temperature control system fA conditioned air distribution systemThe ARP is applicable to both civil and military rotorcraft where an ECS is specified; however, certain requirements peculiar to military applicationssuch as nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) protectionare not covered. The integration of NBC protection into aircraft ECS is discussed in AIR4362. This revision updates ARP292 per the latest specifications, references, and technology.
