Book excerpt: In M.S. thesis #1, advantages of applying exergy-based analysis and optimization methods to the synthesis/design and operation of aircraft systems is demonstrated using a supersonic aircraft fighter flown over an entire mission. A first set of optimizations involving four objectives (two energy-based and two exergy-based) are performed with only propulsion and environmental control subsystem degrees of freedom. Losses for the airframe subsystem are not incorporated into the two exergy-based objectives. The results show that, as expected, all four objectives globally produce the same optimum vehicle. A second set of optimizations is then performed with airframe degrees of freedom. However, this time one of the exergy-based objectives incorporates airframe losses directly into the objective. The results are that this latter objective produces a significantly better optimum vehicle. Thus, an exergy-based approach is not only able to pinpoint where the greatest inefficiencies in the system occur but seems to produce a superior optimum vehicle as well by accounting for irreversibility losses in subsystems only indirectly tied to fuel usage. No studies to date of which we are aware demonstrate the technology through an entire mission in which multiple flight conditions and constraints are encountered. Consequently, in M.S. theses #2 and #3, a formal Mach 6 through Mach 10 flight envelope is explored which includes cruise, acceleration/climb, deceleration/descend and turn mission segments. An exergy approach to the vehicle synthesis/design, in which trade-offs between dissimilar technologies are observed, is proposed and measured against traditional energy-based methods of assessing highly integrated systems. The mission-level analysis provides much insight into the dynamics of mission-level hypersonic flight and demonstrates the usefulness of an exergy destruction minimization measure for highly integrated synthesis/design.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complex engineering design requires solving large optimization problems involving several disciplines. Collaborative Optimization is a two-level design optimization architecture that solves multidisciplinary problems as a series of single-disciplinary problems with little infrastructure overhead. It can be critical when practitioners do not have a fully coupled multidisciplinary optimizer but have access to multiple single-disciplinary optimizers. However, it comes at a steep computational cost because the limited information sharing between disciplines slows downs the progress of the optimization. Our work shows that this issue can be mitigated by exploiting the full extent of the available information. In the Collaborative Optimization framework, disciplines are repeatedly given a design point and tasked with finding the closest feasible design. These iterations are computationally expensive as they require each discipline to solve an optimization problem and report the result. To combine the information collected by all iterations, we propose to learn a predictive model of the distance to the feasible set of each discipline using datasets of feasible and infeasible design points. This requires modeling the signed distance function of each set, which is a challenging machine-learning task. Therefore, we introduce Householder networks: a new, lightweight neural network architecture that can learn distance functions more efficiently than conventional architectures. We then introduce our new method, called Bayesian Collaborative Optimization, which uses ensembles of Householder networks to represent probabilistic models of the disciplinary feasible sets. Following the Bayesian Optimization framework, these models are iteratively refined and used to find values of the design variables that improve the objective function while remaining feasible for every discipline. This method is shown to outperform previous Collaborative Optimization approaches on simple test problems. Finally, we introduce a new multi-disciplinary aircraft design problem. We optimize the airframe, propulsion system, and trajectory of an unmanned fixed-wing vehicle tasked with completing a half-marathon with a fixed battery. This problem tries to balance out realism, by including a diverse set of modeling and optimization approaches, with simplicity and low computational cost. The importance of trajectory optimization, which is efficiently solved by itself but hard to solve coupled with other disciplines, makes this problem different from those previously available. We hope that this problem will be useful to the research community as a test for multidisciplinary design optimization architectures. Book excerpt: Bridging the gap between concepts derived from Second Law of Thermodynamics and their application to Engineering practice, the property exergy and the exergy balance can be a tool for analyzing and improving the performance of energy conversion processes. With the exergy analysis it is possible to evaluate the performance of energy conversion processes not only on a thermodynamics basis but also by including production costs and environmental aspects and impacts of the studied processes. This comprehensive approach of the use of energy has, as one of the most important feature, the identification of sustainable ways of energy resources utilization. Based on the fundamentals of the exergy concept, its calculation, graphical representations and exergy balances evaluation, Exergy: Production Cost And Renewability describes the application of detailed exergy and thermoeconomic analysis to power plants and polygeneration systems, petroleum production and refining plants (including hydrogen production), chemical plants, biofuel production routes, combined production of ethanol and electricity, aircraft systems design, environmental impact mitigation processes and human body behavior. The presented case studies aim at providing students, researchers and engineers with guidelines to the utilization of the exergy and thermoeconomic analysis to model, simulate and optimize real processes and industrial plants.

The purpose of this work is to develop methods for representing, managing, and fusing information of various levels of fidelity within an engineering discipline and across multiple disciplines for a wide-range of analysis and design tools. An efficient, radial basis function-based extension of multifidelity sequential Kriging optimization was developed. This method, referred to as multifidelity sequential radial basis optimization (MFSRBO) addresses multicriteria optimization involving more than a single type of model representing more than a single discipline, and takes into account both the location in design space and the fidelity of further data acquisition/infill. Several variants of the method are discussed, and their potential assessed for future development. The application of MFSRBO is illustrated on a UAV wing design function integrating information from structural and fluid models. In the context of virtually any major computational (CAD/FEM) optimization, the proposed methods offer substantially reduced computational cost to arrive at the optimum solution. As a result, engineers and researchers can potentially solve more desigh problems in less time and achieve higher quality results at reduced costs.
