Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Rhetoric and English Composition The method which I have followed throughout in the' text, in nomenclature, order, and treatment, is that which Professor Barrett Wendell of Harvard Col lege has developed in the course of his teaching there, and by which, as his pupil, his assistant, and his friend, I have for seven years profited. In his English Composition (charles Scribner's Sons, both teacher and pupil will find the principles of rhetoric stated and expounded with a clearness and brilliancy which I have not found elsewhere. The exercises, and to some extent the text, have been carefully revised in the Fifth Edition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exercises in Rhetoric and English Composition: Advanced Course Two years ago I published a little book under the title of "Exercises in Rhetoric and English Composition," with the idea of presenting in a compact form (1) such theoretical matter as it seemed to me necessary for the young student of Rhetoric to have thoroughly in mind, and (2) material for practice of all sorts in applying the principles laid down in the text. That book, which was somewhat too elementary for college use, I have now enlarged and made more advanced in character, until it represents, to my mind, a body of instruction in Rhetoric suitable for the first semester or the first two terms of the Freshman year. If any other teacher should chance to make use of my work, he will perhaps be helped by noticing several peculiarities which it shows. First, I have said very little about "style." What a Freshman needs most of all is to write correctly, clearly, and with some vigor. Attempts to lay stress on individuality of style or on the element of beauty in the pupil's writing should, I think, be deferred until later in the course. Second, I have treated Rhetoric as an art, not as a science. The other point of view is natural and reasonable, but, it seems to me, appropriate only for more advanced students than those for whom I intend this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Composition and Rhetoric IN this book the author has endeavored to present a clear and comprehensible discussion of the essentials of Rhetoric and English Composition, and to furnish the stu dent with suitable constructive and critical exercises. The statement of rhetorical principles as set forth in the text and the exercises placed at the end of each chapter have been the outgrowth of nine years' experience in the teaching of high school and college students. Such a course of practical instruction as is embodied in this book should, it is believed, form part of the training of every young man and woman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School English: Composition-Rhetoric-Literature The literature selections have been edited with the design not only of supplying necessary information but also of inducing the student to do his own thinking. There is at present far too much so-called appreciation and far too little real thought expended upon literature. In the prepara tion of the Exercises and of the Notes and Questions the authors have constantly borne in mind this supreme aim of education - the development of the ability to think. Teachers are therefore urged to require the students to write all the Exercises and to answer all the Questions. Reproduction in the line of condensation is the Summary. The matter given for the Summary is much greater than for the Reproduction, and the required essay may be made shorter. The object of the Summary is brevity of expression and grasp of thought. If these various exercises be at first applied to easy matter, stories, simple poems, etc., the pupil will be able to apply them with great advantage, in a more advanced part of his course, to the more difficult subjects of history, science, orations, etc. The Paraphrase deals exclusively with style. The passage given is short; the pupil is obliged to concem trate his efforts on the best ways of re-expressing it. The excellence of this exercise no experienced teacher will doubt. Dr. Harris says, One increases rapidly in the command of language when he is required to para phrase, and to discover the advantages and disadvantages of the modes of expression used by himself and others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Written and Spoken English, Vol. 1: A Course in Composition and Rhetoric Part II is a carefully organized summary of illustrated rules in punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure, and diction, intended for daily reference. A Key to these rules is given on pages 288 - 291 to aid the teacher in mark ing themes, and the method is illustrated on page 287. The teacher will place a rule number on the pupil's theme opposite an error. The pupil will study the rule and then correct his theme, thus learning the principle in the most practical way. Learn to do by doing well is the message this book has for the pupil. The author is convinced that careless theme writing does the pupil more harm than good, and that the habitual use of improper diction or incorrect sentence construction in classroom exercises often fixes bad habits so thoroughly in the mind of the pupil that they remain with him through life. Throughout the book, therefore, he correlates composition work with grammatical and rhetorical theory, and at all times he insists that the pupil write the themes carefully and neatly and then correct the errors after the teacher has indicated where they are. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition and Rhetoric: By Practice, With Exercises, Adapted for Use in High Schools and Colleges This is, first of all, a practical book; not that it excludes theory, but that it gives prominence to practice. If this were not the case, it need not have been written. There are already books enough that deal ably with the theoretical part of the subject, but there are none that combine with theory a sufficient amount of practice. As composition is both a science and an art, no system of teaching it can be successful that does not recognize both of these departments. Young people do not acquire facility and correctness of expression merely by memorizing rules or by poring over methods of sentential structure. Repeated and varied experience in the making of sentences is necessary as well. Still, the learning of principles is not to be neglected; for, although it is not the whole, it is an essential part. How, then, can these two departments of the subject be most advantageously presented to the pupil? Every discerning teacher must have found that little theory and much practice is by far the most effective method of teaching composition. On this maxim this book is based; and its purpose is to furnish the teacher with the means of carrying into effect the plan here indicated. It proceeds on the simple method of laying down a few principles at a time, and then illustrating them with such number and variety of exercises that the pupil may fully master the practical application of these principles, and thereby learn not only to write, but to write correctly.
