Book excerpt: L'utilisation de machines parallèles pour les systèmes de gestion de bases de données est la solution aux besoins de performances des nouvelles applications des bases de données (e.g. analyse statistique, entrepôts de données). Afin d'exploiter le parallélisme, les requêtes sont découpées en plusieurs tâches, exécutées sur plusieurs processeurs. Un des obstacles majeurs à l'obtention de bonnes performances réside dans l'équilibrage de la charge entre les différents processeurs. En effet, le temps de réponse d'une exécution parallèle est égal au temps de réponse du processeur le plus charge. Une mauvaise distribution de la charge de travail peut donc entraîner une chute de performance importante. Ce problème a été largement étudié pour des architectures classiques (mémoire partagée, disques partages ou complètement distribués) ; Les solutions proposées sont généralement spécifiques à un type de parallèlisation et à une architecture. Les architectures hybrides tentent d'associer la flexibilité de l'architecture à mémoire partagée et l'extensibilité des architectures distribuées. Dans cette thèse, nous abordons le problème de la répartition de charge pour ces architectures lors de l'exécution de requêtes complexes. Notre approche est totalement différente des études existantes. D'une part, les solutions proposées dans cette thèse sont dédiées à des architectures hybrides et cherchent à exploiter toutes leurs possibilités. D'autre part, les mécanismes développés sont entièrement dynamiques. Enfin, nous considérons d'une manière intégrée les différentes formes de parallélisme intra-requêtes. Nous proposons et évaluons une stratégie d'exécution de requêtes permettant d'obtenir un bon support des mauvaises distributions de données sur dbs3, un sgbd parallèle conçu pour une architecture à mémoire partagée. Nous étendons alors les concepts de dbs3 dans le but de prendre en compte une architecture hiérarchique, consistant enun ensemble de noeuds multiprocesseurs a mémoire partagée, relies par un réseau rapide. Finalement, nous reconsidérons l'exécution parallèle de requêtes complexes sur une architecture a mémoire non uniforme et proposons un nouveau modèle d'exécution, adapté à cette architecture. Ces trois modèles sont implémentés sur la machine ksr1 munie de 72 processeurs et ont fait l'objet de mesures de performances intensives

However, when published data refer to individual respondents, disclosure risk limitation techniques must be implemented to anonymize the data and guarantee by design the fundamental right to privacy of the subjects the data refer to. Disclosure risk limitation has a long record in the statistical and computer science research communities, who have developed a variety of privacy-preserving solutions for data releases. This Synthesis Lecture provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of privacy in data releases focusing on the computer science perspective. Specifically, we detail the privacy models, anonymization methods, and utility and risk metrics that have been proposed so far in the literature. Besides, as a more advanced topic, we identify and discuss in detail connections between several privacy models (i.e., how to accumulate the privacy guarantees they offer to achieve more robust protection and when such guarantees are equivalent or complementary); we also explore the links between anonymization methods and privacy models (how anonymization methods can be used to enforce privacy models and thereby offer ex ante privacy guarantees). These latter topics are relevant to researchers and advanced practitioners, who will gain a deeper understanding on the available data anonymization solutions and the privacy guarantees they can offer.

"Silent cinema" may rarely have been silent, but the sheer diversity of sound(s) and sound/image relations characterizing the first 20 years of moving picture exhibition can still astonish us. Whether instrumental, vocal, or mechanical, sound ranged from the improvised to the pre-arranged (as in scripts, scores, and cue sheets). The act of copying, and the creation and transaction of rights relating to it, evokes fundamental notions of communication and censorship, of authorship and ownership - of privilege and property. This volume conceives a new history of copyright law that has its roots in a wide range of norms and practices. The essays reach back to the very material world of craftsmanship and mechanical inventions of Renaissance Italy where, in 1469, the German master printer Johannes of Speyer obtained a five-year exclusive privilege to print in Venice and its dominions. Along the intellectual journey that follows, we encounter John Milton who, in his 1644 Areopagitica speech 'For the Liberty of Unlicensed Printing', accuses the English parliament of having been deceived by the 'fraud of some old patentees and monopolizers in the trade of bookselling' (i.e. the London Stationers' Company). Later revisionary essays investigate the regulation of the printing press in the North American colonies as a provincial and somewhat crude version of European precedents, and how, in the revolutionary France of 1789, the subtle balance that the royal decrees had established between the interests of the author, the bookseller, and the public, was shattered by the abolition of the privilege system. Contributions also address the specific evolution of rights associated with the visual and performing arts. These essays provide essential reading for anybody interested in copyright, intellectual history and current public policy choices in intellectual property.
