Book excerpt: William Wordsworth (7 April 1770 - 23 April 1850) was a major English Romantic poet who, with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped to launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their joint publication Lyrical Ballads (1798). The Excursion: Being a portion of The Recluse, a poem is a long poem by Romantic poet William Wordsworth and was first published in 1814[1] (see 1814 in poetry). It was intended to be the second part of The Recluse, an unfinished larger work that was also meant to include The Prelude, Wordsworth's other long poem, which was eventually published posthumously. The exact dates of its composition are unknown, but the first manuscript is generally dated as either September 1806 or December 1809

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses one of the key problems in signal processing, the problem of identifying statistical properties of excursions in a random process in order to simplify the theoretical analysis and make it suitable for engineering applications. Precise and approximate formulas are explained, which are relatively simple and can be used for engineering applications such as the design of devices which can overcome the high initial uncertainty of the self-training period. The information presented in the monograph can be used to implement adaptive signal processing devices capable of detecting or recognizing the wanted signals (with a priori unknown statistical properties) against the background noise. The applications presented can be used in a wide range of fields including medicine, radiolocation, telecommunications, surface quality control (flaw detection), image recognition, thermal noise analysis for the design of semiconductors, and calculation of excessive load in mechanics. Introduces English-speaking students and researchers in to the results obtained in the former Soviet/ Russian academic institutions within last few decades. Supplies a range of applications suitable for all levels from undergraduate to professional Contains computer simulations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for courses with a major focus on poetry during the Romantic period, this volume includes all the poetry selections from Volume 4 of The Broadview Anthology of British Literature, along with a number of works newly edited for this volume. The Broadview Anthology of Romantic Poetry maintains the Broadview Anthology of British Literature’s characteristic balance of canonical favorites and lesser-known gems, featuring a breadth of poetry from William Blake to Phillis Wheatley, from Ebenezer Elliott to Felicia Hemans. To give a sense of the full sweep of the Romantic period, the anthology incorporates important early figures from William Collins to Phillis Wheatley, as well as works by Victorians—such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Alfred, Lord Tennyson—for whom Romanticism was a formative force. “Contexts” sections provide valuable background on cultural matters such as “The Natural and the Sublime” and “The Abolition of Slavery,” while the companion website offers a wealth of additional resources and primary works. Longer works newly prepared for the bound book include Byron’s Manfred and The Giaour, Keats’s Hyperion, and substantial selections from Wordsworth’s fourteen-book Prelude; authors newly added for this volume include Hannah Cowley, Hannah More, Ann Yearsley, Robert Southey, and Thomas Moore.

Book excerpt: Over the past 20 years, the study of superprocesses has expanded into a major industry and can now be regarded as a central theme in modern probability theory. This book is intended as a rapid introduction to the subject, geared toward graduate students and researchers in stochastic analysis. A variety of different approaches to the superprocesses emerged over the last ten years. Yet no one approach superseded any others. In this book, readers are exposed to a number of different ways of thinking about the processes, and each is used to motivate some key results. The emphasis is on why results are true rather than on rigorous proof. Specific results are given, including extensive references to current literature for their general form.

Book excerpt: The first comprehensive guide on maximum adverse excursion -- apowerful new tool for dramatically lessening trading risks "Trading successfully, like everything else, is built upon solidpreparation. It is the well-prepared individual who will be able tocope in today's competitive market. John Sweeney's Maximum AdverseExcursion will provide you with the steps to perform the analyticalreview of your trading system that you should undertake before youever risk your capital." -- Thomas Hartle, Editor TechnicalAnalysis of Stocks & Commodities magazine "Maximum Adverse Excursion deals with a much overlooked subject:how to minimize losses. If every trader took John Sweeney's adviceand learned how to minimize losses before trying to make profits, they would be financially ahead." -- Martin J. Pring, President TheInternational Institute for Economic Research "John Sweeney has done it again. As with Campaign Trading, he takesa complex set of ideas and explains them in a simple,easy-to-understand manner, in a form that traders can use to helpthem make informed and profitable buy-sell decisions." -- CliffordSherry, PhD, author The Mathematics of Technical Analysis Most successful traders have a "sixth sense" that alerts them toloss points and amounts. But what happens when intuitionfails? When the potential loss incurred on a trade is significant, youneed more than guesswork. But is it possible to estimate the losspoint accurately--quantitatively? With maximum adverse excursion(MAE), the answer is a resounding "YES". This innovative method ofrisk management enables traders to steer clear of potentiallydevastating results by pinpointing loss points before implementingtrading decisions. Now, in the first book to provide an in-depthexamination of this vital trading tool, John Sweeney, MAE developerand Technical Editor of the highly regarded Technical Analysis ofStocks & Commodities magazine, takes you step by step throughits various intricacies. In this comprehensive and accessible reference, Sweeney shows howthe key to successful MAE implementation lies in determiningwhether there is any consistency in market behavior. By measuringand charting price excursion from a set point of entry, you canestablish--quickly and easily--whether prices show consistentbehavior over a finite time frame. If, in fact, some regularity, some pattern in price changes is revealed, you can then exploit itwhile in the trade. The bottom line is a more reliable system fordiscerning whether your trade is going in your direction or not,and--in either case--what likely events are next. By replacingguesswork with statistical descriptions, you can objectivelydetermine when to cut off a loser, or put in a protective stop . .. or take profits. Maximum Adverse Excursion can give you "the elusive edge thattraders seek . . . a line all your own, from which profits can flowwith minimized, quantifiable risk." This comprehensive, accessiblereference gives you the tools you need to employ MAE successfully, including detailed information on: * Defining and calculating adverse, minimum, and maximum favorableexcursion (MinFE and MaxFE) * Displaying MAE--aggregation, frequency diagrams, stop size * Determining specific capital requirements--capital conservation, defining drawdowns * Profit definition by stop level--profit tradeoffs, profit curves, interpretation * Impact of volatility changes--tweaks, changing stops by range orvolatility * Trading management--portfolio impacts, day-to-day management, elaborations Complete with sample calculations, practical examples, and EXCELprograms for creating your own charts, this is the definitive guideto using MAE effectively--and profitably.

It was produced to celebrate his 90th birthday. The selection is only a subset of the many contributions that he made throughout his prolific career. Another volume, Chance and Choice, published by World Scientific in 2004, contains yet another subset, with four articles in common with this volume. Kai Lai Chung's research contributions have had a major influence on several areas in probability. Among his most significant works are those related to sums of independent random variables, Markov chains, time reversal of Markov processes, probabilistic potential theory, Brownian excursions, and gauge theorems for the Schr”dinger equation. As Kai Lai Chung's contributions spawned critical new developments, this volume also contains retrospective and perspective views provided by collaborators and other authors who themselves advanced the areas of probability and mathematics.

This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geological and palaeontological records of climate change and evolutionary events reflect Earth’s widely fluctuating climate systems. Past climates hold the clues to understanding future developments. In this context, research on linked climate, biodiversity and sea-level fluctuations of the Devonian contributes to the general knowledge of deep-time climate dynamics. A fruitful co-operation between the International Geoscience Programme IGCP 596 and the International Subcommission on Devonian Stratigraphy (SDS) addressed the complex succession of climate-linked Devonian global events of varying magnitude. The primary goal of IGCP 596 was to assess mid-Palaeozoic climate changes and their impact on marine and terrestrial biodiversity using an interdisciplinary approach. The focus of SDS includes a revision of the eustatic sea-level curve and the integration of refined chrono- and biostratigraphy with modern chemo-, magneto-, cyclo-, event- and sequence stratigraphy. This enabled the much improved dating and correlation of abiotic perturbations, evolutionary changes, organism and ecosystem ranges. Results by 37 authors are presented in 14 chapters, which cover the entire Devonian.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations into the FM threshold phenomenon have resulted in the development of several signal processing techniques that can be implemented at the output of any FM demodulator, including phase lock loop and FM feedback demodulators, to provide improved system performance. These techniques are based on the distinguishing characteristics of the demodulator output noise below threshold. Performance improvement and threshold extension are achieved by operating on the demodulator output signal and noise such that the threshold noise impulses are eliminated. The characteristics of three postdetection threshold extension techniques are evaluated with respect to the ability of such techniques to improve the performance of a phase lock loop demodulator. These techniques include impulse-noise elimination, signal correlation for the detection of impulse noise, and delta modulation signal processing. Experimental results from signal-to-noise ratio data and bit error rate data indicate that a 2- to 3-decibel threshold extension is readily achievable by using the various techniques. This threshold improvement is in addition to the threshold extension that is usually achieved through the use of a phase lock loop demodulator.
