One of the methods used to calculate these cross sections requires knowledge of all exclusive processes contributing to the inclusive reaction. Conservation laws are used to determine all possible exclusive reactions involving strong interactions between pions and nucleons. Inclusive particle masses are subsequently determined and are needed in cross-section calculations for inclusive pion production.Norbury, John W. and Blattnig, Steve R. and Tripathi, R. At the same time, pion beams are used as probes to explore the nucleus and its interactions. As pion physics has matured over the years, a rich and diverse variety of phenomena has been uncovered. The aim of this book is to examine the underlying physical picture behind these phenomena in a systematic and coherent way. The authors emphasize the interplay between physical concepts and experimental facts more than the formal tools, which are presented in a series of appendices. The book is directed towards advanced students as well as research workers.

Book excerpt: At the peak of the delta resonance, the pion is the most strongly interacting particle we know. It follows that interactions between pions and nuclei at these energies all tend to involve multiple scattering to some degree. Multiple scattering includes different kinds of processes. In its simplest forms, it involves a sequence of interactions with single nucleons that take place as the pion bumbles its way through a nucleus. Much more interesting is the possibility that there are interactions that in some sense directly involve several nucleons at once. If there are such interactions, can we distinguish between them and the simpler, more prosaic forms of multiple scattering Experimental study of pion-nucleus reaction mechanisms has produced intriguing suggestions that truly multi-nucleon interactions do occur. They are the subject of this paper. To develop this subject I will focus on reactions that cannot happen at all without the essential participation of two or more nucleons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Synthesizing the theoretical and experimental advances in pion-nucleon interactions over approximately the last twelve years, the authors offer here a timely account of the hadronic interactions of pions and nucleons and of the structure of nucleons. Because of the hadronic SU3 symmetry, the book also treats the structure of baryons in general, and so contains much material external to the specific field of pion-nucleon interactions. Thus the book's subject can be stated as the hadronic structure of baryons as illustrated particularly by pion-nucleon interaction. Following an introductory discussion of isotopic spin, the authors proceed to chapters that treat low energy pion scattering by nucleons and the photoproduction of pions; forward and fixed momentum transfer dispersion relations; analytic properties of scattering amplitudes; formation of nucleon resonances; symmetries and classification of particles and resonances; current algebra, sum rules, and superconvergence relations; scattering at higher energies; pion-nucleon dynamics; pion-nucleon inelastic scattering; and the form factors of the nucleon and the pion. Each chapter is followed by abundant references to the original literature. The level of the writing is suitable for students at the graduate level, and the presentation is even and self-contained. On balance, the authors have prepared a useful consolidation and review of this difficult and changing area of investigation. Originally published in 1973. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the "Conference on the (p,n) Reaction and the Nucleon-Nucleon Force" held in Telluride, Colorado, March 29-31, 1979. The idea to hold this conference grew out of a program at the Indiana University Cyclotron Facility to study the (p,n) reaction in the 50-200 MeV energy range. The first new Indiana data, in contrast to low energy data, showed features suggestive of a dominant one pion exchange interaction. It seemed desir able to review what was known about the fre·e and the effective nucleon-nucleon force and the connection between the low and high energy (p,n) data. Thus the conference was born. The following people served as the organizing committee: S. M. Austin, Michigan State University W. Bertozzi, Massachusetts Institute of Technology S. D. Bloom, Lawrence Livermore Laboratory C. C. Foster, Indiana University C. D. Goodman, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Conference Chairman) D. A. Lind, University of Colorado J. Rapaport, Ohio University G. R. Satch1er, Oak Ridge National Laboratory G. E. Walker, Indiana University R. L. Walter, Duke University and TUNL The sponsoring organizations were: Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana University of Colorado, Boulder, Colorado Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory, Durham, North Carolina Of course, the major credit for the success of the con ference must go to the speakers who diligently prepared their talks that are reproduced in this volume.

Book excerpt: Effects due to elementary particle-like collisions within nuclear matter have been observed in several nuclear reactions caused by pions and protons. Simple nuclear reactions of the form ZA(a, an)Z/sup A-1/ and Z/sup A/(a, ap)(Z-1)/ sup A-1/ have excitation functions that are sensitive to changes in the elementary-particle cross sections. The excitation function for the reaction C/ sup 12/(pi /sup -/, pi /sup -/n)C/sup 11/ is measure d from 53 to 1610 Mev by bombarding targets of plastic scintillator with pions. The intensity of the pion beam is monitored with a two-counter telescope and 40 Mc scaling system. The scintillator target is mounted on a phototube and becomes the detector for the carbon-11 positron activity. Corrections are made for muon contamination in the beam, coincidence losses in the monitor system, carbon-11 activity produced by stray background at the accelerator, carbon-1l activity produced by secondaries in the target, and the efficiency of the carbon-11 detection system. The C/sup 12/(pi /sup -/, pi /sup -/n)C/sup 11/ cross sections rise to a peak of abo ut 70 mb at 190 Mev, that corresponds to the resonance in freeparticle pi /sup -/n scattering at 190 Mev. Calculations based on a knock-on'' collision mechanism and sharp-cutoff nuclear density reproduce the shape of the experimental excitation function, but the magnitudes of the calculated values are low by a factor of six, The calculation shows that the C/sup 12/(pi /sup -/, pi /sup -/ n)C/sup 11/ reaction occurs in the nuclear s urface region at all bombarding energies, The contributions to the (pi /sup -/, pi /sup -/n) reaction predominate on the front surface of the nucleus in order to give the pion the maximum probability of escaping. The excitation functions for the reactions ured radiochemically from 400 Mev to 6.2 Bev. The slight increase in the (p,2p) cross sections measured from 400 to 720 Mev is related to the occurrence of a quasi- free-particle pp colliaion within the nucleus. Due to the proton momentum distribution, the increase is not as pronounced as the rise in freeparticle pp total cross sections from 400 to 1000 Mev. From 2.2 to 8.2 Bev, the Zn/sup 68/ (p,2p)Cu/sup 67/ and Fe/sup 67/(p,2p)Mn/sup 5 cross sections are constant at 21 plus or minus 2 mb and 50 plus or minus 8 mb, respectively. The difference in magnitudes of the (p,2p) cross sections is ascribed to the availability of only two protons in zinc-68 and of six protons in iron-57 for this particular reaction. The free-particle effects are not seen in more complex reactions as evidenced by the constant cross sections from 0.72 to 6.2 Bev for the yields of manganese-51 and -52 from the reactions of protons with iron and for the yields of copper-61 and -84 from the reactions of protons with zinc. Cross sections are presented for a few products from pion-induced reactions requiring several nucleons to be emitted. The yields of manganese-58 and -52 and iron-52 from the bombardment of natural copper by negative pi meson, the yields of copper-67, -61, and -64 and manganese-52 and -56 from the negative pi meson bombardment of natural zinc, and the cross section for sodium-24 from negative pi meson + aluminum-27 are compared to the yields for similar reactions induced by protons. At the high energies considered here, interaction of negative pi meson with these targets is shown to give yields that are of the same order of magnitude as the yields from proton reactions. These results are interpreted as experimental evidence that pion processes are very important for energy transfer in high-energy nuclear reactions. 99 references. (auth).

Book excerpt: One of the most fundamental problems in elementary particle physics is the study of the interaction of the pion meson with nucleons. It is believed that the pion meson plays a fundamental role in the description of nuclear forces and it is important, therefore, to understand the interaction of these particles. The primary method of gaining information on this interaction is through scattering experiments, and this book is concerned primarily with studies of pion-nucleon scattering at high energies. The Physics in a New Era series explores these advances and looks ahead to future goals. The series includes assessments of the major subfields and reports on several smaller subfields, and preparation has begun on an overview volume on the unity of physics, its relationships to other fields, and its contributions to national needs. Nuclear Physics is the latest volume of the series. The book describes current activity in understanding nuclear structure and symmetries, the behavior of matter at extreme densities, the role of nuclear physics in astrophysics and cosmology, and the instrumentation and facilities used by the field. It makes recommendations on the resources needed for experimental and theoretical advances in the coming decade.
