Book excerpt: The value of the excitation energy of some ions at the moment of the impact were measured by means of the determination of the impulse transferred to the atom or molecule. In order to determine the excitation energy of particles to the time 0.000001 sec after the ionization the method of the second impact was used. The atoms and ions of noble gases, hydrogen molecules, oxygen molecules and others in long-lived highly excited states were detected by means of this method. These excited particles are in the states closed to the states of their following ionization. The reactions of excited and unexcited atoms and molecules are studied. It is shown, that some products (H3(+), HeH(+)) formerly treated as resulting exclusively from ion-molecules reactions are formed also in the reactions between the neutral particles. The influence of vibrational excitation on ion-molecule reactions of the formation H3(+) was investigated. (Author).
