Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers have achieved an enviable position as the class of materials having the highest volume of production, exceeding that of both metals and ceramics. The meteoric rise in the production and utilization of polymers has been due to advances in polymer synthesis which allow the creation of specific and well-defined molecular structures, to new knowledge concerning the relationships between polymer structure and properties, and to an improved understanding of how processing can be used as a tool to develop morphological features which result in desired properties. Polymers have truly become 'engineered materials' in every sense of the term. Polymer scientists and engineers are forever seeking to modify and improve the properties of synthetic polymeric systems for use in specific applications. Towards this end they have often looked to nature for advice on how to design molecules for specific needs. An excellent illustration of this is the use of noncovalent bonding (ionic, hydrogen, and van der Waals) in lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids, where these noncovalent bonds, acting both intra and intermolecularly, precisely control the structure and thus the function of the entire system. The utilization of ionic bonding, in particular in man-made polymers has attracted widespread interest in recent years, since ionic interactions exert a similar strong influence on the structure and properties of these synthetic systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The breadth of scientific and technological interests in the general topic of photochemistry is truly enormous and includes, for example, such diverse areas as microelectronics, atmospheric chemistry, organic synthesis, non-conventional photoimaging, photosynthesis, solar energy conversion, polymer technologies, and spectroscopy. This Specialist Periodical Report on Photochemistry aims to provide an annual review of photo-induced processes that have relevance to the above wide-ranging academic and commercial disciplines, and interests in chemistry, physics, biology and technology. In order to provide easy access to this vast and varied literature, each volume of Photochemistry comprises sections concerned with photophysical processes in condensed phases, organic aspects which are sub-divided by chromophore type, polymer photochemistry, and photochemical aspects of solar energy conversion. Volume 34 covers literature published from July 2001 to June 2002. Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage in major areas of chemical research. Compiled by teams of leading authorities in the relevant subject areas, the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, with regular, in-depth accounts of progress in particular fields of chemistry. Subject coverage within different volumes of a given title is similar and publication is on an annual or biennial basis.

Book Synopsis Molecular Photonics by : Kazuyuki Horie
Download or read book Molecular Photonics written by Kazuyuki Horie and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-07-11 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New organic compounds with interesting and improved electronic and photonic properties are being reported on a daily basis, with new light-triggered materials being designed for molecular and bioelectronic devices. The relatively new concept of molecular photonics embraces photochemistry and photophysics, dealing with light-induced changes in materials and their electronic states as well as the field of optics. This volume begins with a background and survey of current light-related research fields, moving on to the fundamentals of molecular photonics. Subsequent chapters deal with the characteristics of photochemical reaction and typical processes of photophysical chemistry, while the last two chapters focus on the study of materials-induced changes in light. The most important concepts are summarized in overview tables to promote active understanding of new topics. .

Book Synopsis Introduction to Physical Polymer Science by : Leslie H. Sperling
Download or read book Introduction to Physical Polymer Science written by Leslie H. Sperling and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-11-25 with total page 877 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Updated Edition of the Classic Text Polymers constitute the basis for the plastics, rubber, adhesives, fiber, and coating industries. The Fourth Edition of Introduction to Physical Polymer Science acknowledges the industrial success of polymers and the advancements made in the field while continuing to deliver the comprehensive introduction to polymer science that made its predecessors classic texts. The Fourth Edition continues its coverage of amorphous and crystalline materials, glass transitions, rubber elasticity, and mechanical behavior, and offers updated discussions of polymer blends, composites, and interfaces, as well as such basics as molecular weight determination. Thus, interrelationships among molecular structure, morphology, and mechanical behavior of polymers continue to provide much of the value of the book. Newly introduced topics include: Nanocomposites, including carbon nanotubes and exfoliated montmorillonite clays The structure, motions, and functions of DNA and proteins, as well as the interfaces of polymeric biomaterials with living organisms The glass transition behavior of nano-thin plastic films In addition, new sections have been included on fire retardancy, friction and wear, optical tweezers, and more. Introduction to Physical Polymer Science, Fourth Edition provides both an essential introduction to the field as well as an entry point to the latest research and developments in polymer science and engineering, making it an indispensable text for chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science and engineering, and polymer science and engineering students and professionals.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Polymer Spectroscopy by : W. Klöpffer
Download or read book Introduction to Polymer Spectroscopy written by W. Klöpffer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has grown out of several courses oflectures held at the University of Mainz in the years 1978 to 1981, at the Ecole Poly technique Federal, Lausanne, and at the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. The last two courses were held in the framework of the "3e Cycle" lectures in June 1981. According to this genesis, the emphasis of the book lies on a unified and concise approach to introducing polymer spectroscopy rather than on completeness which, by the way, could hardly be achieved in a single volume. In contrast to other books on this subject, equal weight is given to electronic spectroscopy, vibrational spectroscopy and spin resonance techniques. The electronic properties of polymers have been increasingly investigated in the last ten years; until recently, however, these studies and the spectroscopic methods applied have not generally been considered as part of polymer spectroscopy. The increasing use of electronic spectroscopy by polymer researchers, on the other hand, shows that this type of spectroscopy provides efficient tools for gaining insight into the properties of polymers which cannot be obtained by any other means.
