Book excerpt: This study explores the extent to which national newspaper coverage of a successful female coach reflects the broader gender ideology of society. This study looks specifically at the New York Times, The Washington Post and USA Today's coverage of six Women's Division I national basketball tournaments in which Pat Summitt coached the University of Tennessee in the championship game. The years included for this analysis are 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2003 and 2004. This rhetorical analysis examines this print coverage to determine if, consistent with previous research on media coverage of the female athlete, Summitt's traditional gender role is privileged over her coaching role. The results suggest that Summitt is characterized in ways that marginalize and trivialize her coaching acomplishments. The findings also suggest that even as women succeed in the male-dominated world of sport, societal pressures require that they be presented as properly gendered heterosexual females.

Book excerpt: This publication reviews the history of women and girls in athletics, assesses the current status of female participation in high school and college competitive athletics, and summarizes recent policy interpretations by the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (dhew) of Title ix of the Education Amendments of 1972. The historical review focuses on American attitudes toward female physicality from the Victorian era to the present. Current obstacles to female participation in sports are identified as sex stereotyping of athletics as unfeminine, the idea that females should not engage in strenuous activity, and discrimination in the allocation of resources for sports. The role of Title ix (which prohibits sex discrimination in Federally-assisted education programs) in ameliorating discrimination in athletics is explained. Changes in female participation in competitive athletics since 1970 are described and related to the implementation of Title ix. Participation figures, by sex, are presented separately for high schools, two year colleges, and four year colleges, and are broken down individually for football, baseball/softball, basketball, tennis, and track. Also described are college budget allocations for men's and women's intercollegiate sports. Appended to the report are statistical tables and discussions and regulations concerning DHEW's jurisdiction under Title ix. (Gc).

Book excerpt: Over the past few years the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I women's basketball tournament has drawn larger crowds, generated increased television ratings, and attracted higher levels of advertising spending. Division I women's basketball is now viewed as the women's "revenue" sport. In light of the limited analysis of the organizational conditions that frame college-sport broadcast production, this case study examines the impact of influential actors on the representation process of big-time college-basketball telecasts. Using a mixed-method approach, this article investigates production conditions and processes involved in producing women's basketball tournament broadcasts, examines the extent to which these broadcasts are consistent with the NCAA's educational mission, and considers the dominant institutional logic that underpins their reproduction. In so doing, this case study provides a critical examination of women's basketball tournament broadcasts and how such broadcasts constitute, and are constituted by, choices in television production structures and practices.

A content analysis of newspaper articles concerning the 2009 NCAA basketball championship was conducted using articles published by the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Houston Chronicle, and Chicago Tribune. The results indicate little evidence that men and women athletes are portrayed in a stereotypical manner consistent with their respective genders. These findings contrast with prior research and suggest possible progress towards more gender equality in the representation of women athletes within print media.
