Book excerpt: The Business of Education—a comprehensive view of how education policy is made in the US and, in some cases, globally—analyzes and critiques the influence of educational policy networks in a wide range of contexts and from a variety of perspectives, including testing, college preparation, juvenile detention centers, special education, the arts, teacher evaluation systems, education of undocumented immigrants, college faculty preparation, and financial aid. A network chart in most chapters illustrates how the major political actors, mainly private philanthropic foundations, for-profit companies, government officials, and politicians involved in the network, are linked. Joel Spring, internationally renowned scholar and analyst of educational policy, situates and frames the network studies in an introduction discussing general theories of education policy networks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines how states, schools, and postsecondary institutions might best help improve college readiness and completion. Though more students are entering college, many drop out, especially those who are low income and/or of color. To address this problem, educational stakeholders have focused on the concept of “college readiness,” or the preparation a student needs to succeed in college. However, what it means to be college ready and how to help more students become ready are questions without clear answers. By way of historical and contemporary analyses, this book uses California as a case study to demonstrate how the state has endeavored to make postsecondary opportunity accessible for all students. The contributors also explore the challenges that remain and address what states and schools can do to improve college readiness and completion. “This book adds important information to the debates and discussions around this critical topic.” — Caroline Sotello Viernes Turner, coeditor of Understanding Minority-Serving Institutions

Book excerpt: "AVID" ("Advancement Via Individual Determination") is a college-readiness program whose primary goal is to prepare middle and high school students for enrollment in four-year colleges through increased access to and support in advanced courses. The program, which focuses on underserved, middle-achieving students (defined as students earning B, C, and even D grades), places students in college preparatory classes (e.g., honors and Advancement Placement classes) while providing academic support through a daily elective period and ongoing tutorials. The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) reviewed 66 studies on "AVID" for adolescent learners. One of these studies meets WWC evidence standards with reservations; the remaining 65 studies do not meet either WWC evidence standards or eligibility screens. Based on one study, the WWC found no discernible effects on comprehension for adolescent learners. The conclusions presented in this report may change as new research emerges. Appendices include: (1) Study characteristics: Rorie, 2007; (2) Outcome measure for the comprehension domain; (3) Summary of study findings included in the rating for the comprehension domain; (4) "AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)" rating for the comprehension domain; and (5) Extent of evidence by domain. Book excerpt: The purpose of this journal is to report on results from research conducted from a survey done in person. The research focuses on high school students both in and out of the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program. Students were asked a series of questions that focused on the following themes: building cultural capital, college access, and growth mindset. The nature and purpose of the research study was to look at the impact AVID had with helping close the achievement gap for students with low socioeconomic backgrounds. The high school was set in a public high SES community. The researcher analyzed where the AVID program at that particular school helped students from low SES backgrounds and where it needed to further support them. Findings found that students in the AVID program generally felt they were less likely to try again and also felt they had more college access. Keywords: AVID, SES, cultural capital, college access, growth mindset

Book excerpt: This study examines the implementation and outcomes of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program within the context of urban middle schools. AVID is a college and career readiness program designed to support students from historically underrepresented backgrounds in their academic pursuits. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the AVID program is implemented in urban middle schools and to determine its impact on students’ academic performance. Using a mixed-methods approach, this research employs quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to gather comprehensive insights. The study involves semi-structured interviews with teachers, campus administrators, district administrators, and coordinators involved with the implementation of the AVID program. Additionally, academic records and standardized test scores were analyzed to measure the outcomes for students who participated in the AVID program compared to their non-AVID peers. The findings of this study will contribute to the existing knowledge on the effectiveness of the AVID program specifically in urban middle schools. By examining the implementation strategies utilized by schools, this research aims to identify the factors that contribute to successful program execution. Furthermore, it seeks to explore how the AVID program influences students' college aspirations and their overall educational experiences in urban middle schools. The outcomes of this research include a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing the AVID program in urban middle schools. The study will also shed light on the impact of the program on academic performance, college aspirations, and the overall educational trajectory of participating students. These findings will inform educators, administrators, and policymakers of the potential benefits and limitations of implementing the AVID program within urban middle school settings. Overall, this dissertation seeks to contribute to the body of research on the AVID program by providing empirical evidence on its implementation and outcomes in urban middle schools. The findings will offer valuable insights to guide future program implementation and inform strategies to enhance the educational experiences and outcomes of students from underrepresented backgrounds in urban settings

Book excerpt: In recent years, there have been countless initiatives and programs meant to improve the educational system in the U.S. However, the emphasis on testing forces teachers to teach to a test and limits their ability to authentically care for students. Advancement Via Individual Determination, AVID, is one of the various policies being implemented to reform K-12 public schools. AVID is a privately run, independent organization that collaborates with school districts and schools to increase academic achievement. One of the many ways the program is designed to do this is through an emphasis on teacher collaboration. In this book, I examine the AVID program and how it fosters a caring environment, looking specifically at teacher collaboration in three Southern California high schools. What limits teacher collaboration and what do these limitations suggest about the possibility of caring in today's schools? This research should illuminate the importance of caring in schools and should be useful to school boards, teachers, parents, administrators, policymakers, and representatives from the AVID program.

More than ever, Geneva Gay's foundational book on culturally responsive teaching is essential reading in addressing the needs of today's diverse student population. Combining insights from multicultural education theory and research with real-life classroom stories, Gay demonstrates that all students will perform better on multiple measures of achievement when teaching is filtered through their own cultural experiences. This bestselling text has been extensively revised to include expanded coverage of student ethnic groups: African and Latino Americans as well as Asian and Native Americans as well as new material on culturally diverse communication, addressing common myths about language diversity and the effects of "English Plus" instruction.

Book excerpt: This essential text unpacks major transformations in the study of learning and human development and provides evidence for how science can inform innovation in the design of settings, policies, practice, and research to enhance the life path, opportunity and prosperity of every child. The ideas presented provide researchers and educators with a rationale for focusing on the specific pathways and developmental patterns that may lead a specific child, with a specific family, school, and community, to prosper in school and in life. Expanding key published articles and expert commentary, the book explores a profound evolution in thinking that integrates findings from psychology with biology through sociology, education, law, and history with an emphasis on institutionalized inequities and disparate outcomes and how to address them. It points toward possible solutions through an understanding of and addressing the dynamic relations between a child and the contexts within which he or she lives, offering all researchers of human development and education a new way to understand and promote healthy development and learning for diverse, specific youth regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or history of adversity, challenge, or trauma. The book brings together scholars and practitioners from the biological/medical sciences, the social and behavioral sciences, educational science, and fields of law and social and educational policy. It provides an invaluable and unique resource for understanding the bases and status of the new science, and presents a roadmap for progress that will frame progress for at least the next decade and perhaps beyond.

Each could write volumes on the topics they address in the Handbook, and quite a few have. The authors tell us what they know in plain language, succinctly presented in short chapters with practical suggestions for states, districts, and schools. The vignettes in the Handbook give us vivid pictures of the real life of parents, teachers, and kids. In all, their portrayal is one of optimism and celebration of the goodness that encompasses the diversity of families, schools, and communities across our nation.

Book excerpt: In order for the United States to maintain the global leadership and competitiveness in science and technology that are critical to achieving national goals, we must invest in research, encourage innovation, and grow a strong and talented science and technology workforce. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation explores the role of diversity in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce and its value in keeping America innovative and competitive. According to the book, the U.S. labor market is projected to grow faster in science and engineering than in any other sector in the coming years, making minority participation in STEM education at all levels a national priority. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation analyzes the rate of change and the challenges the nation currently faces in developing a strong and diverse workforce. Although minorities are the fastest growing segment of the population, they are underrepresented in the fields of science and engineering. Historically, there has been a strong connection between increasing educational attainment in the United States and the growth in and global leadership of the economy. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation suggests that the federal government, industry, and post-secondary institutions work collaboratively with K-12 schools and school systems to increase minority access to and demand for post-secondary STEM education and technical training. The book also identifies best practices and offers a comprehensive road map for increasing involvement of underrepresented minorities and improving the quality of their education. It offers recommendations that focus on academic and social support, institutional roles, teacher preparation, affordability and program development.
