Peer mentorship has been shown to support graduate students through academic socialization and achievement in higher education (Lorenzetti et al., 2019). The purpose of this study was to explore the transitional experiences of international graduate students, and the extent to which peer-mentoring relationships can support academic and emotional wellbeing. Researchers interviewed 13 international graduate students from 3 professional faculties at a research-intensive Canadian university. International students described academic and intersectional challenges experienced while navigating and adapting to new environments and how these impacted both academic outcomes and students’ well-being. Relationships with peers were viewed as an essential means by which students could access academic and psychosocial supports necessary to adjust to and thrive in their new educational and cultural environments.

By studying in what is known as "the land of opportunities," international graduate students beyond acquiring knowledge had the opportunities to network with other professionals and enhance their cultural awareness. With the surge in the number of international graduate students, there had been increased attention paid to the needs of this population; however, many colleges and universities were not adequately prepared to deal with the wave of international graduate students. A comprehensive review of the literature showed that attention given to international students ranged from areas such as transitional difficulties all the way to physiological needs. The purpose of this critical, mixed method case study was to examine the transitional difficulties of international graduate students and how university stakeholders may better accommodate the needs of international graduate students at a pre-orientation program known as the webinar program. According to Tas (2013), it is a good practice to outreach to international graduate students before they arrive on campus. In the case of this comprehensive university in southeast Pennsylvania, a synchronous online webinar was implemented to allow a seamless arrival-and-welcome that facilitates the success of acculturation of international graduate students at this educational institution. By examining the acculturation needs of international graduate students in a pre-orientation program, the initial gateway to every graduate program, faculty, professional staff and students were able to better prepare and accommodate the needs of international graduate students even as they assist them to assimilate into the environment. All university constituents who were directly involved with planning and implementing orientation programs benefited and gained a better understanding of possible transitional difficulties that international graduate students can face when starting in a United States institution. Institutional commitment to international graduate students is a must since what is provided to them impacted the retention rate, academic performance, social interaction with other students, and their overall physiological and psychological being. Above all, international graduate students must be a focal point in the design of every research-1 institution of the pre-orientation program. Understanding diversity can establish a level of trust and acceptance with our graduate students but most importantly a deep appreciation and understanding for different cultures in an educational institution. The research questions guiding this mixed method case study were: (1) What were the academic, social, and cultural histories of international graduate students and how did an existing pre-orientation program acknowledge, appreciate and address these histories? (2) What strategies and techniques did international graduate students employ to cope in their new environment? (3) What policies and procedures did an educational institution employ to bridge the disconnects between student needs and institutional commitment? Relying on quantitative and qualitative methods of triangulation, observations, surveys and a focus group were conducted and collected from eligible participants in three different stages: (a) to acquire feedback about the effectiveness of the pre-orientation program from students' perspectives by administering a questionnaire to participants who attended one of the two pre-orientation sessions; (b) to determine if the different orientation programs and activities during welcome week were applicable to our international participants by administering a questionnaire to participants who attended these events; and (c) a follow-up with a focus group interview comprised of eleven participants at the conclusion of the university-wide orientation program.

This qualitative study addresses this gap in the literature by using Rendón's (1994) validation theory and by drawing upon 11 students' lived experiences at a four-year public research university in the state of Texas. Four distinct themes emerged from the study's findings, such as international Indian graduate students' lack of understanding of academic advising, their perceptions of academic advising, supportive academic advising experiences, and challenging academic advising experiences. The study revealed that international Indian graduate students' understanding and perceptions of academic advising were different from their lived experiences. The results also highlight the role of an academic advisor in students' adjustment process as well as the importance of an academic advisor in making informed decisions related to academics. More importantly, guided by Rendón's validation theory, it was determined that participants' believed their supportive experiences with academic advising validates their academic success and social adjustment, while their challenging experiences with academic advising (in)validate their academic success and social adjustment. The larger international student experience research must continue to delve into ways in which colleges and universities across the United States can play a substantive role in better preparing and supporting international students prior to and after their arrival. To that end, colleges and universities must also better prepare academic advisors when serving international students and provide for increased support and infrastructure in the field of academic advising.

Book excerpt: International students in the United States are unique because they come from cultures and education systems that are different from those in the U.S. The purpose of this study was to explore the academic experiences of international graduate students in the U.S. Qualitative research methods were used to explore how being from another culture impacts international graduate students' academic experience, and what positive and negative factors affected their experience. The 14 participants were international graduate students from a variety of world regions and fields of study who had lived in the U.S. from 2 to 12 years. The students participated in individual interviews that addressed differences between U.S. and home country education systems, relationships and other supports, challenges and stressors, and the changes they underwent as a result of their international study experience. Data from the interviews were analyzed using qualitative methods of analysis. The analysis yielded a hierarchical organization of the data into 9 domains, 28 categories, and 73 themes. Participants identified several differences between their home country cultures and education systems and those in the U.S. They also indicated that they were impacted by the process of cross-cultural adjustment. Factors that they found helpful to their academic experience included relationships, campus programs and services, and their own behaviors and perspectives. Factors that affected them negatively included communication and relationship differences, lack of certain types of assistance, and some of their own attitudes and behaviors. Participants also reported changes in career plans and self-perception that resulted from studying in the U.S. Results of this study suggest that although international graduate students meet their educational goals in the U.S., their experience could be less stressful and more meaningful if institutions of higher education take into account their unique needs. These needs include having different expectations regarding education than U.S. students and going through the process of cultural adjustment. International students on U.S. college and university campuses provide opportunities for institutions to broaden their cross-cultural perspectives and their views on education.

The study used a phenomenological interpretive approach, incorporating the narratives of fifteen international graduate students from eleven countries. The researcher guided this study based on Bronfenbrenner's ecological model of human development (1977, 1979, 1994). The findings provided insight into the interactions that international graduate students have with faculty, how these interactions influenced their experiences, and how classroom practices impacted academic experiences for international graduate students.Faculty who acknowledged the unique needs and cultural differences of international graduate students supported students in positive ways, resulting in favorable outcomes. Reaching out to offer assistance, friendship, and guidance provided an important foundation for students' ability to persist. Exhibiting patience and extending time for issues involving the English language in the areas of class participation, reading, and writing were also instrumental in supporting academic progress.When faculty employed cultural references in class that eluded international graduate students or incorporated curriculum that was outside of their lived experiences, students were lost, felt excluded, and were unable to learn or make sense of the material. In these cases, international graduate students struggled, suffered, and in some instances failed.Understanding this engagement process between faculty and international graduate students, and subsequent influences on academic experience and progress, contributes to the literature by calling attention to the impact this engagement may present. Further, detailing the important role faculty and institutions of higher education may impart, as well as consequences for students should the engagement be less than supportive, helps fill gaps in the existing literature regarding interactions between faculty and international graduate students.I also presented conclusions, recommendations for faculty, international graduate students, and institutions of higher education, and suggestions for future research. Acknowledging that the needs of international graduate students are unique and significant will aid faculty toward this end. Orientation programs for faculty providing strategies to work with and support international graduate students is imperative. Further, institutional programs that effectively support international graduate students during their educational adjustment must be a priority in our universities. Enhancing these support programs for faculty and international graduate students is an important consideration and recommendation for universities to heed.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to determine and compare the academic experiences encountered by both American and foreign students in master's and doctoral programs at Oregon State University in Winter term, 1982. The findings of this study are meant to contribute to the area of international education, by defining and describing foreign students' academic experiences in American Higher Education. The results of this study could help scholars who deal with foreign students to develop an adequate approach to academic advising and curriculum designing, and could help foreign students who are studying or planning to study abroad to develop a proper approach to the academic aspect of their learning experience. The instrument used in this study was a questionnaire entitled "College Academic Experience Survey." Two hundred and sixty graduate students were selected at Oregon State University in Winter Term 1982, and divided into four subgroups based on nationality and degree program. Among the four subgroups a comparison was made in the areas of academic learning experience, estimate of gains and background information. In February 1982, before the survey started, a pilot study was conducted among 20 graduate students, which made a valuable contribution to the validity of the questionnaire. The survey started in March 1982 by using a three-stage mailing system and a response rate of 81.9% was achieved. There were three null hypotheses tested by a three-dimensional loglinear model and two-factor analysis of variance. The following findings were drawn from this study: 1. There were statistically significant differences between American and foreign graduate students at Oregon State University in how they put their efforts into academic work. The specific tests were done in the area of academic experiences, estimate of gains, and background information. 2. Although foreign students in the sample had some problems, chiefly language and financial, there was no noticeable problem mentioned about the competence of instruction they received. Foreign graduate students "survive" their academic programs through their approaches which is different from that of their American counterparts. 3. Both American and foreign students in this study reportedly have achieved large gains as a result of their academic efforts. Foreign students seem to be aware that they have received cultural and social enrichment in addition to their purely academic gains.

There were three essential research questions: 1. What social, psychological and academic challenges do international students face during their transition at a four-year institution? 2. How do international students overcome the social, psychological and academic challenges that they face? 3. What recommendations do international students have regarding the adjustment process? The study researched the experiences of Lander State University international students and identified the challenges they faced. The researcher attempted to discover the various ways that international students overcame their challenges. The purpose was to identify the social, psychological, and academic needs of international students as they transitioned to Lander State University from their home countries. Sources of Data This study utilized a mixed methods approach. The study consisted of 45 international students. Forty-eight point nine percent of the survey participants were undergraduate students, 35.6% were graduate students, and 15.6% were alumni. Sixty-seven point four percent were from Asia while 18.6% were from Europe. Survey respondents from the African region totaled two percent, those who came from Australia and New Zealand made up two percent of the respondents, and two percent came from North America. Conclusions Reached The predominant challenge that international students encountered were social challenges. The social challenges they encountered included having lack of friendships and dealing with isolation and seclusion. The majority of participants did not encounter academic difficulty during their transition experience. The small number who struggled academically felt unprepared for the academic workload and language barriers. Homesickness was the leading challenge encountered by those who struggled with psychological challenges. The findings revealed the importance of ensuring that international students have a good social experience to help them adjust to the university.
