Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The controversy of flux and stasis as the groundwork of reality of Greek ancient philosophy reached its crux in the all encompassing doctrine of the logos by Heraclitus of Ephesus. It centers upon human soul in its role with the cosmos. Philosophy of the Occident corroborating Greek insights with the progress of culture in numerous interpretations (Kant, Kierkegaard, Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, Ricoeur...), presented in this collection has neglected the cosmic sphere. While contemporary development of science revealed its grounding principles (papers by Grandpierre, Kule and Trutty-Coohill) the ancient logos fully emerges. Thus, logos hitherto hidden in our commerce with earth is revealed in its intertwinings with the cosmos through the trajectories of the phenomenology/ontopoiesis of life (Tymieniecka). The crucial link between the soul and the cosmos, in a new geo-cosmic horizon, is thus being retrieved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tying together almost four decades of neo-Piagetian research, Cognitive Development provides a unique critical analysis and a comparison of concepts across neo-Piagetian theories. Like Piaget, neo-Piagetian theorists take a constructivist approach to cognitive development, are broad in scope, and assume that cognitive development is divided into stages with qualitative differences. Unlike Piaget, however, they define the increasing complexity of the stages in accordance with the child’s information processing system, rather than in terms of logical properties. This volume illustrates these characteristics and evidences the exciting possibilities for neo-Piagetian research to build connections both with other theoretical approaches such as dynamic systems and with other fields such as brain science. The opening chapter provides a historical orientation, including a critical distinction between the "logical" and the "dialectical" Piaget. In subsequent chapters the major theories and experimental findings are reviewed, including Pascual-Leone's Theory of Constructive Operators, Halford's structuralist theory, Fischer's dynamic systems approach to skills, Case's theory of Central Conceptual Structures, Siegler’s microgenetic approach, and the proposals of Mounoud and Karmiloff-Smith, as well as the work of others, including Demetriou and de Ribaupierre. The interrelation of emotional and cognitive development is discussed extensively, as is relevant non neo-Piagetian research on information processing. The application of neo-Piagetian research to a variety of topics including children's problem solving, psychometrics, and education is highlighted. The book concludes with the authors' views on possibilities for an integrated neo-Piagetian approach to cognitive development.

Book excerpt: The Via Claudia Augusta was the first Europe-connecting road across the Alps, to which the Romans extended the routes through which the Celts, Raetians, Venetians, Ligurians and Etruscans were in contact with each other. The history of the millennia-old road and the history of the places and regions along it are constantly being researched. The historical publication includes contributions by archaeologists and historians on particularly interesting and new aspects of Europe's cultural axis Cultural contacts and trade relations along the Via Claudia Augusta in the mirror of the archaeological findings (Prof. Dr. Gerald Grabherr, University of Innsbruck) Roman wood and gravel road in the Eschenloher Moos: Emperor Claudius and the Via Claudia Augusta (Dr. Werner Zanier, Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities) The predecessor of the Via Claudia Augusta Prehistoric traffic in North Tyrol (Margarethe Kirchmayr, Bakk. MA) From the Po to the Elbe - The Via (Claudia) Augusta in the time of Emperor Augustus (Dr. Bernd Steidl, Bavarian State Archaeological Collection, Munich) Beyond the Via Claudia Augusta, from Altino to the north (Jacopo Turchetto, Ancient topography, University of Padova) Testimonials of the Via Claudia Augusta between the Po river and Verona (Patrizia Basso & Valeria Grazioli, University of Verona) A Roman settlement on the Via Claudia Augusta in Dormitz south of the Fernpass (Mag. Barbara Kainrath, University of Innsbruck) The Via Claudia Augusta moves the Vinschgau into the center of Europe (Dr. Hubert Steiner, Office for Buried Archaeological Monuments Bolzano/Bozen/Ufficio Beni archeologici Bolzano) The Via Claudia Augusta in South Tyrol - The construction of roads as an emblem of the conquest and transformation of the territory (Alessandro de Leo & Stefano di Stefano) The Via Claudia Augusta, a road between the Adriatic and the Danube at the origins of Europe (Dr. Prof. Vittorio Galliazzo, University of Venice) Telling stories, in and between the museums (M. A. Manfred Hahn, Roman Museum of Augsburg) Today, the Via Claudia Augusta is a cultural-historical themed road where you can experience everything that shaped this important road before the Romans, in Roman times, in the Middle Ages and in modern times: Regions, times, people and their cultures, and all this on foot like the Romans, on the most popular cross-border bike route of the Germans or on a panoramic route for car, camper, bus. www.viaclaudia.org

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines a key issue in current cognitive theories - the nature of representation. Each chapter is characterized by attempts to frame hot topics in cognitive development within the landscape of current developmental theorizing and the past legacy of genetic epistemology. The chapters address four questions that are fundamental to any developmental line of inquiry: How should we represent the workings and contents of the mind? How does the child construct mental models during the course of development? What are the origins of these models? and What accounts for the novelties that are the products and producers of developmental change? These questions are situated in a historical context, Piagetian theory, and contemporary researchers attempt to trace how they draw upon, depart from, and transform the Piagetian legacy to revisit classic issues such as the child's awareness of the workings of mental life, the child's ability to represent the world, and the child's growing ability to process and learn from experience. The theoretical perspectives covered include constructivism, connectionism, theory-theory, information processing, dynamical systems, and social constructivist approaches. The research areas span imitation, mathematical reasoning, biological knowledge, language development, and theory of mind. Written by major contributors to the field, this work will be of interest to students and researchers wanting a brief but in-depth overview of the contemporary field of cognitive development.

This book and its companion volume, Mathematics, Education and Philosophy: An International Perspective are edited collections. Instead of the sharply focused concerns of the research monograph, the books offer a panorama of complementary and forward-looking perspectives. They illustrate the breadth of theoretical and philosophical perspectives that can fruitfully be brough to bear on the mathematics and education. The empathise of this book is on epistemological issues, encompassing multiple perspectives on the learning of mathematics, as well as broader philosophical reflections on the genesis of knowledge. It explores constructivist and social theories of learning and discusses the rile of the computer in light of these theories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our ontology as well as our grammar are, as Quine affirms, ineliminable parts of our conceptual contribution to our theory of the world. It seems impossible to think of enti ties, individuals and events without specifying and constructing, in advance, a specific language that must be used in order to speak about these same entities. We really know only insofar as we regiment our system of the world in a consistent and adequate way. At the level of proper nouns and existence functions we have, for instance, a standard form of a regimented language whose complementary apparatus consists of predicates, variables, quantifiers and truth functions. If, for instance, the discoveries in the field of Quantum Mechanics should oblige us, in the future, to abandon the traditional logic of truth functions, the very notion of existence, as established until now, will be chal lenged. These considerations, as developed by Quine, introduce us to a conceptual perspective like the "internal realist" perspective advocated by Putnam whose principal aim is, for cer tain aspects, to link the philosophical approaches developed respectively by Quine and Wittgenstein. Actually, Putnam conservatively extends the approach to the problem of ref erence outlined by Quine: in his opinion, to talk of "facts" without specifying the language to be used is to talk of nothing.
