This book was released on 1997 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late-Holocene evolutionary and ecological response of pocket gophers (Thomomys talpoides) and other species to climatic change is documented by mammalian fossils from Lamar Cave, a palaeonotological site in northern Yellowstone National Park. Pocket gophers illustrate ecological sensitivity to a series of mesic to xeric climatic excursions in the sagebrush-grassland ecotone during the last 3200 years, increasing in abundance during mesic intervals, and declining in abundance during xeric intervals. Four other small mammal taxa (Microtus sp., Peromyscus maniculatus, Neotoma cinerea and Spermophilus armatus) also show response to climatic change, increasing or decreasing in abundance in accordance with their preferred habitat requirements. To determine evolutionary response to climate, two craniodental characters for the northern pocket gopher (Thomomys talpoides) are investigated in modern representatives within a 400km radius of Lamar Cave and then tracked through the time spanned by the fossils. One morphologic character shows that variation in body size, primarily a plastic response to the environment, demonstrated few taxonomically consistent patterns of geographic variation across 39 modern localities. In contrast, the other character indicates genetic relatedness within subspecies. Stasis in the genetically controlled character indicates that the same subspecies of pocket gopher (T. talpoides tenellus) has occupied northern Yellowstone for at least 3200 years. However, T. t. tenellus does show plastic response to climatic change because pocket gophers during the Medieval Warm Period were smaller than at any other time spanned by the deposit.

Book Synopsis Revision of the Pocket Gophers of the Genus Thomomys (Classic Reprint) by : Vernon Bailey
Download or read book Revision of the Pocket Gophers of the Genus Thomomys (Classic Reprint) written by Vernon Bailey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Revision of the Pocket Gophers of the Genus Thomomys Sir: I have the honor to transmit herewith for publication as North American Fauna no. 39, a revision of the pocket gophers of the genus Thomomys, by Vernon Bailey, chief field naturalist of the Biological Survey. Pocket gophers are burrowing rodents which in pursuit of food and in running tunnels often damage crops, young trees, and irriga tion ditches. Moreover, the heaps of earth ejected from the tunnels not only cover more vegetation than the animals eat, but also obstruct the operation of mowing machines. Gopher burrows frequently penetrate and cut through irrigation-ditch banks, and the escaping water becomes a menace to agriculture and sometimes to human life. The animals are thus of considerable economic importance. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Life Underground by : Eileen A. Lacey
Download or read book Life Underground written by Eileen A. Lacey and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2000-09 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many mammals like to dig in the dirt, but few call it home. Those that do, such as mole-rats, zokors, and tuco-tucos, have developed novel adaptations to their subterranean life, including bones and muscles modified for efficient digging and ways to "see" underground without using their eyes. These unusual traits, adopted independently by unrelated groups around the world, also make subterranean rodents fascinating subjects for biologists. Life Underground provides the first comprehensive review of the biology of subterranean rodents. Arranged by topic rather than by taxon to facilitate cross-species comparisons, chapters cover such subjects as morphology, physiology, social behavior, genetic variation, and evolutionary diversification. Two main questions run throughout the book. First, to what extent has subterranean life shaped the biology of these animals, leading to similar adaptations among otherwise dissimilar species? Second, how have the distinct evolutionary histories of these groups led to different solutions to the challenges posed by life underground?
