At a time when revolutionary movements are going on all over the civilised world we may learn, to some extent, from the past what to avoid in the present and the future. My obligations to the works of Lewis H. Morgan and Karl Marx are manifest, though I have ventured to differ, occasionally, from those great writers. In dealing with the downfall of slavery I have drawn upon the admirable Italian school of historic economy headed by Ciccotti and Salvioli. I am conscious of many shortcomings in my attempt to survey briefly the early institutions and subsequent development of mankind. But I hope it may induce younger men than myself to work out a more complete study of this great subject. The title was suggested to me by my friend, Mr. Curtis Brown. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coming of Evolution: The Story of a Great Revolution in Science It is not, as sometimes suggested, the striking out of new ideas which is of the greatest importance in the history of science, but rather the accumulation of observations and experiments, the reasonings based upon these, and the writings in which facts and reasonings are presented to the world - by which a merely suggestive hypothesis becomes a vivifying theory - that really count in making history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dogma of Evolution The leaders of scientific thought, in the sixteenth century, believed that the question involved an or ganized revolution of method. If the earth, and all it contained, were merely a part of a universe subject solely to mechanical laws and forces, then a death blow had been given to the dogma of the Church, founded on the inspiration of the Scriptures and on the interpretation of Aristotelian philosophy, that the world was fashioned for man by a Creator and Ruler of the universe who could, and frequently did, supersede natural law. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Life: Its Origin, History and Future The University of Chicago in December, 1955, began planning its celebration of the centenary in the most appropriate manner - bringing to bear on the subject of evolution current knowledge from a variety of relevant fields, thus advancing once more our understanding of the world and man. About fifty scientists were selected during 1956, and their themes were agreed upon; during 1957 and 1958 they developed the papers that are published here. As these were completed, they were exchanged among the authors. Armed with new information and insights, all but five of the authors met at the University on November 22, 1959, to prepare for panel discussions of the issues in evolution; these were held for the public during a five-day Celebration, beginning on the Centennial of the publication date of Origin of Species. The discus sions were based on the papers that had been prepared and distributed in advance, but were not delivered at the Celebration. The present volume, The Evolution of Life, and its companion volume, The Evolution of Man, represent most of the collected Uni versity of Chicago Centennial papers. A small group on the relation ship between science and spiritual values appears in a third volume, Issues in Evolution, which also contains the panel discussions and an index to all three volumes. Collectively, this work 15 called Evolution after Darwin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Causes of Evolution So close a correlation is rather rare in the history of human thought. For example, men had been aware for ages of the existence of a past history of the human race before Daniel (or the author of the Book of Daniel) made the first attempt to View that history as a whole, and give a summary account of it. If Daniel had been the first person to persuade thinking men that the past had differed appreciably from the present, it is clear that his particular account of the historical process would have had a greater intellectual influence than it has actually had} We must therefore carefully distinguish between two quite different doctrines which Darwin popularised, the doctrine of evolution, and that of natural selection. It is quite possible to hold the first and not the second. Similarly with regard to the doctrines of Darwin's great contemporary Marx, it is possible to adopt socialism but not historical materialism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution Question: if we accept the Theory of Evolu tion as true in science, how should it modify the thought and action of a man who wishes to do his best in this world? The question is necessary because we find that different and inconsistent conclusions on the point have been reached by men speaking in the name of science and speaking with authority. These differences are due not to anything in science, but to certain extra-scientific assumptions. To test the worth Of such assumptions is the work of philosophy; and this volume is accordingly an essay in philosophy. Science is but organised common sense. Science and Religion both claim to deal with realities. The realism of common sense, therefore, the form of philosophy to which both seem to point, is that which is set forth here. The idea of Nietzsche is a travesty of biology; highly differentiated species do not as a rule undergo great modifications in Nature their place is taken by some less specialised race still capable of a closer adaptation to the environment. On biological principles we should look for a Superman to arise aeons hence from some now lowly and barbarous stock, as yet perhaps sub-human the progress would be from Subman to Superman, and our own efforts at improve ment would have little effect on the consummation. But With our intelligence we stand on the threshold of a greater development; a new type is emerging which will supersede Man as he now is in his puny isolation of spirit, as the multicellular forms superseded the Protozoa. Our line of progress is no longer bio logical but logical, not through exploitation to super species but through synthesis to a new entity, Organic Society, the creation of Evolution Creatrice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the Fall IN common with a large and increasing number of theological writers who firmly maintain the catholic faith, the author of these lectures believes that, at the present stage of advance in natural science, the evo lutionary theory affords the best available working hypothesis of the origin of species; and that this hypothesis is applicable to the human species in its physical aspects. Whether the evolutionary theory can sustain the test of further scientific investigation and of wider induction - that is, whether it constitutes the final word of science, the lecturer does not pretend to judge. But in the present state of knowledge, it seems presumptuous and futile for one who is not an expert in natural science to join issue with scientists on the subject.
