Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper surveys research leading to allowable shear stress parallel to grain for lumber. In early flexure tests of lumber, some pieces failed in shear. The estimated shear stress at time of failure was generally lower than shear strength measured on small, clear, straight-grained specimens. This and other engineering observations gave rise to adjustments that underwent some evolution not well described in the literature. Some anomalies which developed are discussed; an error is shown to have prevailed in the concept of a split beam for about 20 years. Some recent research done in Canada shows particular promise for describing the load capacity of checked beams that will fail in shear. This paper should provide helpful background for engineering groups charged with improving allowable property assignments for lumber and other wood products. (Author).

This book was released on 2001 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper documents the development of procedures in American Society for Testing and Materials standards for adjusting the allowable properties of lumber for changes in moisture content. The paper discusses the historical context of efforts to establish allowable properties on a consensus basis, beginning in the 19th century. Where possible, the reasons for proposed changes in the standards are presented. The goal of this work is to foster a better understanding of how current standards have evolved and to promote reconciliation of conflicting property assignment procedures between current standards.

Book Synopsis Case Studies for Fatigue Education by : Ralph Ivan Stephens
Download or read book Case Studies for Fatigue Education written by Ralph Ivan Stephens and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 1994 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides engineering educators and students with a broad range of non- trivial, real-world fatigue problems/situations and solutions for use in the classroom. The 13 cases involve new designs, rework designs, failure analysis, prototype decisions, environmental aspects, metals, non-metals, components, structures, and fasteners. The cases bring out the need for students to integrate elements of engineering that commonly enter into a fatigue design or failure analysis. No index. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until approximately 1965, allowable design stresses for lumber in tension were taken as equal to those assigned for bending. As interest in tensile properties increased, testing machines were designed specifically to stress lumber in tension. Research results that accumulated on tensile tests of full-size lumber suggested lower design stresses for tension than for bending for both machine stress rated and visually graded lumber. The latests change for visual grades, based on a review of research data available up to 1977, was a reduction in design tensile stresses that varied by size and grade. (Author).
