Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problems of Evolution It is unnecessary in a study of this kind, which is avowedly an attempt to approach the problems of species formation and general organic evolution in the broadest possible way, to delve into the past history of the subject in detail. Anyone who is interested in it will undoubtedly be thoroughly acquainted with that history so that a general survey may be dispensed with. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution Evolution in astronomy, from Kant to Lockyer; evolution in chemistry and physics, from Lucretius to the alchemists, and thence to Ramsay and his fellow-alchemists of to day; evolution in geology, from Leonardo and Palissy to Lyell and Darwin and onwards all these large retrospects of the history of science are needed for a grasp of cosmic evolution. Their impetus, their methods too, have once and again impelled the student of organic nature towards evolutionary inter pretations, and still do so; while the thought Of the physicist and Of the naturalist are in creasingly Oi interest and suggestion towards the distinctively human and social studies. I told him God, and he knew enough and was content with his knowledge. After a while he grew older and his inquisitive spirit began to puzzle with the question of how God had made him. When his growing mind was ready for the new knowledge I took him to my side and told him the great mystery of life. I told him how he owed to his father and to his mother the beginnings of his life, how God gave him to us. Now a new era opened in his childish mind. AS he grows on to greater maturity he cannot help wondering how the first man was made, how the trees, and the world came to be. He is no longer satisfied with the simple state ment that God made them. His eager mind wants to know, if may be, how God made them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution: A Fantasy The author did more than this. To have stopped there would have been merely clever, merely the ex pression in poetic form of Darwin's Descent of Man, and his epic of Evolution far more than cleverness, it has the ring of genius. The crowning glory of Evolution is, perhaps, the manner in which he interwove throughout his master piece of imagination a golden thread of romance that becomes more and more lustrous as the story unfolds. He linked inseparably physical life and spiritual life, the so-called vital and eternal sparks, as, into the web of the lives that evolve, he wove the woof of love and brought them down through the ages together as one. For I loved you even then, he sings as he throws his soul back through the ages to the first vertebrates of the Paleozoic period. Ever together he pictures life by life, love by love, breath by breath. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and the War The way in which the distinction between men and animals is glossed over by the two fashionable schools of modern thought, and the misleading fashion in which observations on inheritance in plants and animals have been extended to human qualities, I have criticized in many occasional articles. The attempt towards a theory of consciousness which I sketch in this book is foreshadowed in my book on The Childhood of Animals, published in and in an address on Science and Life, published early in 1914. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of Evolution I assume that the principles which have brought about the evolution of plants and of animals other than man must account, no less, for human evolution. But no sooner is the human stage entered upon than morality, religion, and the accumulation of knowledge begin to play, each of them, an important part, which becomes more impor tant as evolution proceeds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lesson of Evolution The first of these essays was delivered at Hobart on the 8th January, 1902, as the inaugural address to the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science. As it was not possible to give in that address any adequate account of the facts of biological evolution, I have added the second essay, which deals entirely with that subject. Of this essay, the first part, on Early Life on the Earth, formed the President's address to the Geological Section of the same Association at its meeting in Sydney in January, 1898; but it has been corrected and brought up to date. The second part, on Later Life on the Earth, appears for the first time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Natural Theology of Evolution Most persons who are disposed to be religious find it an easy thing to see the hand of God in the works of nature. To them it is pleasant and profitable to contemplate the world as Gods handiwork, and they are disposed to offer the marks of design which it shows as a convincing proof of His existence. The attempt to present this proof in a clear and orderly way has given rise to Natural Theology, a study which, until quite recently, was in high repute and esteem. It attained, perhaps, to its maximum of influence with the publication of Paley's Natural Theology, a remarkable work which put the argument from design in the plainest and clearest terms, and which was everywhere accepted as conclusive. It was accompanied and followed by many other works from which we may learn how highly Natural Theology was esteemed and how widely it was studied; of these the Bridgwater Treatises are, perhaps, the most famous. But this era of exceptional triumph and brilliancy did not last long. It may be said to have come to an end with the publication on the 24th of November, 1859, of Darwin's Origin of Species. As that book became well known the influence of Natural Theology declined. It was felt that the whole argument had lost its force, and that the appearance of plan and contrivance in Nature was fully and satisfactorily accounted for without any necessity for attributing it to conscious design. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Causes of Evolution So close a correlation is rather rare in the history of human thought. For example, men had been aware for ages of the existence of a past history of the human race before Daniel (or the author of the Book of Daniel) made the first attempt to View that history as a whole, and give a summary account of it. If Daniel had been the first person to persuade thinking men that the past had differed appreciably from the present, it is clear that his particular account of the historical process would have had a greater intellectual influence than it has actually had} We must therefore carefully distinguish between two quite different doctrines which Darwin popularised, the doctrine of evolution, and that of natural selection. It is quite possible to hold the first and not the second. Similarly with regard to the doctrines of Darwin's great contemporary Marx, it is possible to adopt socialism but not historical materialism. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dogma of Evolution The leaders of scientific thought, in the sixteenth century, believed that the question involved an or ganized revolution of method. If the earth, and all it contained, were merely a part of a universe subject solely to mechanical laws and forces, then a death blow had been given to the dogma of the Church, founded on the inspiration of the Scriptures and on the interpretation of Aristotelian philosophy, that the world was fashioned for man by a Creator and Ruler of the universe who could, and frequently did, supersede natural law.
