Although, therefore, a general agreement will be found to exist throughout the series, one or two of the writers have made no secret of their holding a much more limited view of the scope and character of Evolution than that represented by the rest. Should exception be taken to this circumstance, we would respectfully submit, that in the settlement of great vital questions it must tend in a much higher degree to healthy, thorough, and impartial discussion when debaters are left perfectly free in every thing save the essentials of the point at issue. In the hope that the following pages may be found helpful by many whose spirits are shadowed by the scepticism of the age, we now commit them. Book excerpt: Click here to visit evolutionandchristianfaith.org "I'm an evolutionary biologist and a Christian," states Stanford professor Joan Roughgarden at the outset of her groundbreaking new book, Evolution and Christian Faith: Reflections of an Evolutionary Biologist. From that perspective, she offers an elegant, deeply satisfying reconciliation of the theory of evolution and the wisdom of the Bible. Perhaps only someone with Roughgarden's unique academic standing could examine so well controversial issues such as the teaching of intelligent design in public schools, or the potential flaws in Darwin's theory of evolution. Certainly Roughgarden is uniquely suited to reference both the minutiae of scientific processes and the implication of Biblical verses. Whether the topic is mutation rates and lizards or the hidden meanings behind St. Paul's letters, Evolution and Christian Faith distils complex arguments into everyday understanding. Roughgarden has scoured the Bible and scanned the natural world, finding examples time and again, not of conflict, but of harmony. The result is an accessible and intelligent context for a Christian vision of the world that embraces science. In the ongoing debates over creationism and evolution, Evolution and Christian Faith will be seen as a work of major significance, written for contemporary readers who wonder how-or if-they can embrace scientific advances while maintaining their traditional values.

The question has been raised in some quarters as to whether religion is dogma or life. In fact, our religion in the last reduction is neither dogma nor life; it is a Way from Sin into the Kingdom of God. Its bed-rock is truth, its pavement is character, its destination is eternal life. It is a plain Way; as indicated in the prophecy, A highway Shall be there and a way, and it shall be called the Way of Holiness; the wayfaring man, though a fool. Canon Bertal Heeney is making a distinct contribution to the religious thought of ur country. Coming as they do at a time when considerable attention is being direc ted in Canada and the United States to the relationship of science to re ligion, these discourses should be a source of great help to those who have had difficulty in finding a solu tion for their religious problems in the light of modern science. This is particularly true of the young stu dent whose religious thinking at first is liable to be upset by the teachings of science. A careful analysis of the subject as given in these discourses impresses the fact that the teach ings oi natural science only tend to strengthen our belief in the fund ameutais of our Christian faith. The term liberal has predominantly a political meaning. The term broad may indicate mere laxity and indifference. I have decided boldly to adopt the term Modernist. It also is unsatisfactory, for what is modem is by no means always in the line of progress. And the Roman Curia has attached the term Modernist to a circle of beliefs which seldom if ever was found in the mind of a single thinker: it has created a sort of clothes-horse, on which to hang any views which it regards as dangerous. But we must reflect that nearly all party names were originally the invention of enemies, including even the name Christian; and we may hope to rescue the term Modernist from ignoble use. I., ten years at Hartford, Conn., and four years at Sharon, Mass. In 1904 he built a house at Greenfield, Mass., where he made his home with his daughter and her fam ily until his death on February 16, 1910. Mr. Kimball was a man of a wide range of reading, thorough, exact and untiring. He was sometimes truer to his convictions than to his convenience and preferred the approval of his own conscience to the applause of the multi tude. He was accustomed to speak his mind with great freedom not only upon the philo sophical and religious beliefs which he cher ished, but also upon the vexing social problems of his generation. He was upright and down right, courageous and persistent. He was also remarkably productive, for in spite of his busy life of study and of pastoral service he wrote unceasingly upon the subjects and in behalf of the causes which enlisted his enthusiasm. A graphic article of his appeared in the Spring field Republican on the day before his death, and another in the Christian Register on the day after his death. It is, as the sub-title suggests, a study of certain Spiritual facts, which cluster round the Mystery of Divine Redemption, viewed in the light of that great principle of Development which has taken posses sion of the mind of to-day, and which seems destined, in its broader aspects, permanently to affect human thought in all its departments. These facts are, Sin and its correlative theory of the Fall of Man; the Person of Christ, His atoning death and Resur rection, and the New Life in Him, which embodies the highest moral and spiritual evolution of human character, and which is the Christian's surest ground for believing in a blessed Immortality; together with such subsidiary problems as radiate from these focal centres. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of the Idea of God: An Inquiry Into the Origins of Religion From the very beginning, however, a legend, true or false (but whose truth or falsity has no relation whatever to our present subject), gathered about the personality of this particular Galilean peasant reformer. Reverenced at first by a small body of disciples of his own race and caste, he grew gradually in their minds into a divine per sonage, Of whom strange stories were told, and a strange history believed by a group of ever-increasing adherents in all parts of the graeco-roman Mediterranean civilisa tion. The earliest of these stories, in all probability - cer tainly the one to which most importance was attached by the pioneers of the faith - clustered about his death and its immediate sequence. Jesus, we are told, was crucified, dead, and buried. But at the end of three days, if we may credit the early documents of our Christian faith, his body was no longer to be found in the sepulchre where it had been laid by friendly hands and the report spread abroad that he had risen again from the dead, and lived once more a somewhat phantasmal life among the living in his province. Supernatural messengers announced his resur rection to the women who had loved him he was seen in the flesh from time to time for very short periods by one or other among the faithful who still revered his memory. At last, after many such appearances, more or less fully described in the crude existing narratives, he was suddenly carried up to the sky before the eyes of his followers, where, as one of the versions authoritatively remarks, he was received into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God - that is to say, of Jahweh, the ethnical deity of the Hebrew people.
