Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has seen great progress in the measurement of evoked potentials in man; a steady increase in our understanding of their charac teristics, their origins and their usefulness; and a growing application in the field of clinical diagnosis. The topic is a truly multidisciplinary one. Important research contributions have been made by workers of many different backgrounds and clinical applications span the specialities. This book represents a revised and updated version of the work originally presented at the international evoked potential symposium held in Nottingham 4-6 1978. The Nottingham Symposium provided a forum for a state-of-the-art discussion amongst workers from many different disciplines and from many different countries. For each major topic in the field an expert review set the scene for discussion of current research presentations. This format is retained in the book: the chapters in Part A provide the context in which the research presented in Part B is set. The task of selecting material for this book, from the wealth of interesting work presented at the Symposium, was undertaken by a selection committee of distinguished authors who were the chairmen for the specialized sessions. To Dr F. W. Campbell, Professor S. J. Crews, Mr W. P. R. Gibson, Professor G. F. A. Harding, Dr D. A. Jeffreys, Dr D. G. Small, Professor H. Spekreijse, Dr A. Starr, Dr A. R. D. Thornton and Professor L. H. van der Tweel, I record my thanks.

Book excerpt: J.P.C. de Weerd Evoked potentials are the electrical voltage fluctuations which can be recorded from parts of the nervous system in response to stimulation of sensory modalities. One may distinguish between evoked potentials from the peripheral and the central nervous system. For the latter type a further subdivision can be made into spinal, brainstem, and cortical evoked potentials, according to the (assumed) structures from which the responses derive. Another possible subdivision can be made with respect to the specific sensory ffiodality which is stimulated. Accordingly, one has auditory, somatosensory, visual, gustatory and olfactory evoked potentials. At the present time, the former three types of evoked potentials are the ones that are commonly measured in diagnostic procedures. Yhe corresponding sensory systems are relatively easy to stimulate, for example by means of an acoustic click, abrief electrical shock or a reversing light pattern. In contrast, stimulation of the olfactory and gustatory systems has proven to be technically and physiologically difficult and research in these areas is still in an early stage.

It is aseries devoted to the presentation of sig nificant research with relevance for both clinicians and researchers in the multiple subfields of psychiatry. This book focuses on the interactions between psychic phenomena and physical processes as studied by evoked brain potentials. It presents material concerned with physiological and psychological unifying processes, as weIl as research concerning technology and methods of obtaining meaningful measurements. As such it is representative of biological psychiatry at its best. Thus, it represents another step in new directions in psychiatric research but not an unanticipated direction. Scientific investigation into the human psyche took an unex pected turn when Sigmund Freud in the last part of the 19th Century turned his attention from neurological concerns to those of psychol ogy. His first attempts at explanations as noted in the "project," included a heavy emphasis on the biological substrate of behavior.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984, Cognitive Psychophysiology: Event-related Potentials and the Study of Cognition is the first volume to come out of The Carmel Conferences: designed to examine in detail the assertion that the endogenous components of the Event-Related Brain Potential (ERP) can serve as a tool in the analysis of cognition. The intent of this book was to examine on a rather broad front the claims of cognitive psychophysiology to a niche in the domain of cognitive science. Discussions included: selective attention; the ERP and decision and memory processes; preparatory processes; mental chronometry; perceptual processes; individual differences and clinical applications. It provides an interesting snapshot of the status of ERP research just as it was venturing assertively into cognitive science.

Book excerpt: Differential psychology, or the psychology of individual differences as it is better known, is perhaps the single most important basic psychological science that underlies professional practice in psychology. The recent age of behaviorism all but ignored individual differences, but in this decade the study has emerged from relative dormancy with a new vitality, fueled by new concepts, technologies, statistics, and new viewpoints on old ideas that are moving us forward. This work is intended to be a review of as well as a primer on many of these advances and new approaches to the study of individual differences. The venerable, interesting, and often controversial Eysenck opens the volume with a review of recent results and new techniques for unlocking the physiological basis of what is commonly understood to be intelligence. Eysenck and his students, in his London laboratory, have been fostering advances in this field for more than four decades. Their latest work could be the most exciting of Eysenck's illustrious, scholarly career. Eysenck's eye-opening, innovative work on the relationship between evoked potentials and performance on traditional psychometric measures, presented with a new slant, is certain to attract much attention in coming years. Eysenck and Barrett's chapter is followed by a closely related work by Arthur Jensen, who gives us a revitalizing look at the concepts of Sir Francis Galton, the founder of the psychology of individual differences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Event-Related Brain Potentials in Man contains the proceedings of a conference held on April 26-29, 1977, and sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health in Rockville, Maryland to assess the field of event-related brain potential (ERP) research. The papers explore findings on ERPs in man in relation to the link between brain and behavior, brain functions, mental states, and drug interactions. Organized into eight chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the functional neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of ERPs, along with their measurement. It then proceeds with a discussion of some applications of ERPs to patients with neurological and sensory impairment, the use of ERPs to analyze sensation as well as perception and attention, the endogenous components of the ERP, the ERP correlates of psychopathology, and the event-related brain potentials across the life span. The reader is also introduced to ethical issues regarding ERPs, with reference to the history of encephalography. An epilogue assessing the increased status and maturity of the ERP field, along with uncharted territories and future prospects, concludes the book. This book will be of interest to scientists and clinical investigators working in biological sciences, neuropsychology, psychiatry, and neurology.

Book excerpt: The past decade has seen a rapid increase in the application of electrophysiologic measurement techniques in evaluating patients with hearing and balance disorders. Advances in computer technology have generated new and exciting applications in the areas of electrocochleography, electroneuronography, electronystagmography, and the auditory brainstem response. This book examines these recent developments and explores new areas of the field currently under investigation. An important issue in electrocochleography today is the widened AP-SP complex. Contributors to this book evaluate its significance in patients with cerebellopontine angle tumor. The many applications of the auditory brainstem response are surveyed, as well as the current status of the mid- and long-latency evoked responses. An overview of the relatively new area of otoacoustic emissions and its clinical applications is also included. Practicing otolaryngologists, otolaryngology residents, audiologists, audiology students, and auditory and vestibular scientists will benefit most from this well-researched book.
