Book excerpt: John Gibbons presents an original account of epistemic normativity. Belief seems to come with a built-in set of standards or norms. One task is to say where these standards come from. But the more basic task is to say what those standards are. In some sense, beliefs are supposed to be true. Perhaps they're supposed to constitute knowledge. And in some sense, they really ought to be reasonable. Which, if any of these is the fundamental norm of belief? The Norm of Belief argues against the teleological or instrumentalist conception of rationality that sees being reasonable as a means to our more objective aims, either knowledge or truth. And it tries to explain both the norms of knowledge and of truth in terms of the fundamental norm, the one that tells you to be reasonable. But the importance of being reasonable is not explained in terms of what it will get you, or what you think it will get you, or what it would get you if only things were different. The requirement to be reasonable comes from the very idea of what a genuine requirement is. That is where the built-in standards governing belief come from, and that is what they are.

Book excerpt: At the age of eighty, my door to a career in medical and scientific writing was slammed shut by ageism. To keep my brain occupied, I turned to writing fiction. I didnt take creative writing courses in my youth, so I hope my shortcomings are compensated for by lessons learned in life. After my wife died of cancer, I raised my sons as a single parent. Ive met politicians, madams, prostitutes, pedophiles, FBI agents, and Russian intelligence agents. Im even acquainted with a former major general in the KGB. Ive traveled to Europe sixteen times, including three visits to Vladimir Putins hometown of Saint Petersburg. I can still speak some French and German. Ive also been to South America and North Africa. I used to be a moderately strong chess player (even Bobby Fischer tolerated my presence, which was uncommon for someone so hostile). Im fairly knowledgeable about dolphins and venomous snakes. My masters paper at Columbia University dealt with nuclear weapons testing. Since my Russian is limited to the alphabet, Im obliged to read my favorite author, Dostoevsky, in English translation. I envy the craftsmanship of James Joyce. His Dubliners should be read and reread by all aspiring fiction writers. Alas, Ill never get to his level.

In a world where we encounter god-like forces in nature, and try to transcend them, the development of a neural network dramatizing good against evil seems inevitable. This critical book explores the cosmic dimensions of the brain's inner theatre as revealed by neurology, cognitive science, evolutionary psychology, psychoanalysis, primatology and exemplary Western performances. In theatre, film, and television, supernatural figures express the brain's anatomical features as humans transform their natural environment into cosmic and theological spaces in order to grapple with their vulnerability in the world.

Book excerpt: To paraphrase silent movie queen Norma Desmond in Billy Wilder's classic 1950 film Sunset Boulevard, "The epic miniseries are big! It's television that got small!" This is especially true when one compares such iconic epic miniseries as Rich Man, Poor Man (1976), Roots (1977), Holocaust (1978), Shogun (1980), The Winds of War (1983), War and Remembrance (1988-89) and Angels in America (2003) to today's ordinary television programming. This work traces the historical trajectory of the epic miniseries and delves into the character archetypes and themes that recur in the genre, giving close critical attention to more than 40 miniseries. A filmography is included.

Book excerpt: ‘Peaceful’ is the most common entry in the visitors’ book of fifteenth-century St Michael’s Church, with its glorious angel roof and its medieval Doom painting. But away from the church, and beneath the idyllic veneer, the tiny Norfolk village of Walston is anything but harmonious. The Rector’s new bride, Becca Thorncroft, is receiving phone calls so unpleasant that her very sanity is at stake; and the newest residents of Walston, Gillian English and Lou Sutherland, are not exactly welcomed with open arms. Then sudden, gruesome death shatters any remaining semblance of serenity. Fortunately for Father Stephen Thorncroft, he is able to enlist the help of his friends Lucy Kingsley and David Middleton-Brown to unravel the tangled relationships and uncover the dark motivations of the villagers. As the investigation proceeds, they stumble on more than they’d bargained for. But it is not until a little girl goes missing that the final, deadly pieces fall into place in their search for the ‘evil angels among them’.
