Book excerpt: In May 1999, after a 40-year career including 100 films, Oliver Reed died, as he had invariably, lived, drinking with friends while making another film - his well-reviewed performance in the blockbuster Gladiator. Having risen through Hammer Horror films to international stardom as Bill Sykes in Oliver!, Reed became, in his own works, 'the biggest star this country has got'. With his legendary off-screen exploits and blunt opinions - especially of his co-stars - he was also on the most infamous. Bestselling author Cliff Goodwin uses material from first-hand interviews with Reed's family, friends and colleagues and never before seen photographs to explore Reed's eventful career. but he also reveals another side to this unique and complex man.
Download or read book Evil Life written by Clive Small and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Calabrian mafia is Australia's oldest, largest and most ruthless crime syndicate, trafficking drugs worth billions of dollars and laundering the proceeds through sophisticated international networks. Enforcing discipline with age-old tools of violence and intimidation, the Calabrians have been responsible for nearly 40 murders in Australia since the mid-1970s and many more before that. Mafia families in Australia report directly to bosses in Calabria and profits are funnelled back to the mother organisation. Yet despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary, Federal and State law enforcement agencies have long assured the public that there is no Calabrian mafia in Australia. With powerful and uncompromising clarity, Evil Life shatters this myth. Drawing on court documents and unreleased intelligence reports, as well as interviews with well-informed sources, the authors reveal how the Calabrian mafia evolved from its beginnings on the north Queensland cane fields in the 1920s to establish cells in every major capital city, making Australia a key outpost in the world of global organised crime.
Book Synopsis The Evil of Banality by : Elizabeth K. Minnich
Download or read book The Evil of Banality written by Elizabeth K. Minnich and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-11-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this expanded edition of The Evil of Banality, Elizabeth Minnich argues for a tragic yet hopeful explanation of “extensive evil,” her term for systematic, normalized harm-doing on the scale of genocide, slavery, sexualized dominance. The book now includes a new preface, new chapter, and expanded afterword addressing ongoing extensive evils, the paradox of lying, and the importance of developing the thinking without which conscience remains mute. Extensive evils are actually carried out not by psychopaths, but by people like your quiet next-door neighbor, your ambitious colleagues. There simply are not enough moral monsters to do the long hard work of extensive evils, nor enough saints for extensive good. In periods of extensive evil, people little different from you and me do its work for no more than a better job, a raise, the house of the family “disappeared” last week. So how can there be hope? Such evils are neither mysterious nor demonic. If we avoid romanticizing both the worst and best of which humans are capable, we can recognize and say no to extensive evil, practice and sustain extensive good, where they must take root – in ordinary lives.
Download or read book Living with Evil written by Cynthia Owen and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cynthia Owen grew up in Ireland, went to the local convent school, said her prayers and took her first communion with all the other girls in her class. But behind the façade of respectability lurked a hideous reality. Cynthia was just eight years old when she was sexually abused by her father amongst others. Shortly before her eleventh birthday she was made pregnant and, minutes after giving birth to the baby, Cynthia watched in horror as her own mother murdered the tiny infant, named Noleen, by repeatedly stabbing her with a knitting needle. Cynthia's mother then wrapped the baby girl in a plastic bag, dumped her in an alleyway and made her daughter go back to school and pretend nothing had ever happened. After enduring many more years of rape and violence, Cynthia came forward and reported her abuse and Noleen's death. Finally, in 2007, after a fifteen-year legal fight to have her baby girl formally identified, the jury at the 'Dun Laoghaire Baby' inquest declared that the baby found dead in an alleyway thirty-four years previously was Noleen Murphy, the daughter of Cynthia Owen. Cynthia's is a horrific story of brutality and loss, but ultimately, it is an account of love, immense bravery and her fight for justice in Noleen's name.

Book excerpt: The Existence By: Theodore Ihejieto The Existence is a book of love and life that talks about the world as the existence of human beings, and tells human beings to understand that the world is the love and the life. It is a book of Planet Earth, which the Planet Earth gave to the author, because the author asked the Planet Earth for the book of the world. The author is a human being who lost faith in God and called on Planet Earth to do work and save human beings from evil and death in the world. This is a book of a human being who was challenged by evil and death in the world, and the human being called on his existence for help and protection. The author did not like to die in the world and told his existence that he did not want to die, because the author believed that Planet Earth has the power to save human beings in the world. The Existence is the faith, the hope, and the charity that God challenged human beings to find and tell the mountain of evil and death to move away from human beings.

Download or read book Why Does God Allow Evil? written by Clay Jones and published by Harvest House Publishers. This book was released on 2017-08-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "If you are looking for one book to make sense of the problem of evil, this book is for you." Sean McDowell Grasping This Truth Will Change Your View of God Forever If God is good and all-powerful, why doesn't He put a stop to the evil in this world? Christians and non-Christians alike struggle with the concept of a loving God who allows widespread suffering in this life and never-ending punishment in hell. We wrestle with questions such as... Why do bad things happen to good people? Why should we have to pay for Adam's sin? How can eternal judgment be fair? But what if the real problem doesn't start with God...but with us? Clay Jones, an associate professor of Christian apologetics at Biola University, examines what Scripture truly says about the nature of evil and why God allows it. Along the way, he'll help you discover the contrasting abundance of God's grace, the overwhelming joy of heaven, and the extraordinary destiny of believers.
Book Synopsis Being Transformed for the Practice of the Church Life by : Witness Lee
Download or read book Being Transformed for the Practice of the Church Life written by Witness Lee and published by Living Stream Ministry. This book was released on 2024-10-01 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we intend to practice the church life, we must first see what the church is. The church is the Body of Christ, a group of people who have Christ living in them and who have given up their own life to take Christ as their life. A group of believers who do not take Christ as life may be genuine, born-again Christians, but their coming together will not be the real church life; it will simply be an assembly of people who are in the self. “The experience of the Body of Christ, the real church life, comes into being practically when we realize that Christ is our life and that we have been crucified with Him on the cross, when we renounce and deny our self, and when we take Christ as our life, live by Him, and apply Him in our daily life and walk. When we as such persons come together in and with Christ to share Christ with one another, we are the Body of Christ in a real way and are practicing the real church life.”
Book Synopsis Women Who Live Evil Lives by : Martha Few
Download or read book Women Who Live Evil Lives written by Martha Few and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women Who Live Evil Lives documents the lives and practices of mixed-race, Black, Spanish, and Maya women sorcerers, spell-casters, magical healers, and midwives in the social relations of power in Santiago de Guatemala, the capital of colonial Central America. Men and women from all sectors of society consulted them to intervene in sexual and familial relations and disputes between neighbors and rival shop owners; to counter abusive colonial officials, employers, or husbands; and in cases of inexplicable illness. Applying historical, anthropological, and gender studies analysis, Martha Few argues that women's local practices of magic, curing, and religion revealed opportunities for women's cultural authority and power in colonial Guatemala. Few draws on archival research conducted in Guatemala, Mexico, and Spain to shed new light on women's critical public roles in Santiago, the cultural and social connections between the capital city and the countryside, and the gender dynamics of power in the ethnic and cultural contestation of Spanish colonial rule in daily life.
Download or read book As I See It written by Cody Coffey and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-03 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People will be interested in this book because it offers insight and a different look at the cycle of life and death and why they are never ending. The who, what, where and why are just fill-ins for the curious, but logical questions and answers that we ponder as humans. I hope to take it further by examining the meaning behind the meaning. The possibilities and the consequences of ignoring the very basis of not just life, but the survival of humanity that we are not here by some kind of accident in the cosmos. What happens and transpires when people no longer feel a purpose to life and this feeling causes an insurrection and destruction of one's soul, where not only do they lash out at each other, they eventually despise themselves. This issue is what happens in the absence of God in one's life and how the soul starves while the flesh feasts in misery and selfishness. The absence of purpose which is a greater good (God) causes a systematic breakdown where the tentacles of misery and chaos run wild as one adopts the mentality of every man, women and child. The more selfish people become the less they care about those further and further away from their "personal space" to the point where they do not care about their own country, their own state, community right up to their own backyard. As evil advances the faithless retreat, one grows more and more selfish in the absence of God. Good and evil, right and wrong become meshed together and a vail of gray causes one unable to discern between the two.
