While the cross section for the Higgs boson production at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider is too low for this channel, it is important to check if the class of exclusive diffraction events exists. We present the evidence for the high mass exclusive dijet production in the D0 experiment. Hard diffractive processes are usually described by the exchange of a colorless object called Pomeron. In diffractive hadron hadron collisions, the hadrons will exchange the Pomeron and either one or both hadrons will not dissolve. The events are identified by either a presence of a large forward region of the detector devoid of any activity (rapidity gap) or by a tagging of the intact beam hadron(s). A subset of diffractive events is called exclusive when the whole Pomeron energy is used to produce the diffractive state, i.e there are no Pomeron remnants. Exclusive diffractive production (EDP) of the Higgs boson or any other new final state X pp --> p + X + p has been recently proposed as a search channel at the LHC. The cross section for the Higgs boson production is too low at the Tevatron (0.2fb is predicted for a Higgs boson mass of 120 GeV), but it is important to check if this class of events exists in this kinematic region. The CDF Collaboration has recently confirmed the existence of EDP in several channels. In this report, we present the evidence for the exclusive production of high dijet invariant mass events, i.e. a dijet event accompanied by large rapidity gaps on both sides of the calorimeter.

Book excerpt: We present evidence for diffractive exclusive dijet production with an invariant dijet mass greater than 100 GeV in data collected with the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. A discriminant based on calorimeter information is used to measure a significant number of events with little energy (typically less than 10 GeV) outside the dijet system, consistent with the diffractive exclusive dijet production topology. The probability for these events to be explained by other dijet production processes is 2 x 10−5, corresponding to a 4.1 standard deviation significance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2001, the D0 experiment entered a new era. Run II of the Tevatron at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory began, and the collider became the highest energy particle accelerator in the world. Accordingly, the D0 detector had already undergone a series of upgrades in order to fully exploit the physics now within reach. These included improvements to the tracking, calorimetry, muon detection and triggering capabilities. In the Standard Model, the Higgs boson is the last piece of the puzzle that remains to be discovered. The Higgs mechanism and consequently the Higgs boson is thought to be the fundamental ingredient by which particles acquire mass, and its existence (or lack of existence) is one of the most pressing issues in particle physics today. As such, one of the main goals of the Run II physics programme at D0 is to search for it. Armed with new accelerator capabilities, D0 will be able to impose tighter constraints on the mass of the Higgs, and perhaps even detect this elusive particle. If the Higgs does exist, it will be extremely difficult to find. One of the main challenges at a hadron-hadron collider is to reduce the large QCD background that masks the relatively tiny Higgs signal. Experimental evidence indicates that the Higgs mass is relatively low, in which case it will decay predominantly to a b$ar{b}$ quark-antiquark pair. The daughter products that must be used to reconstruct the parent Higgs are therefore likely to be heavy flavour b-quark jets whose energies must be known as accurately as possible. In the first part of this thesis consideration is given to these jets, in particular to the jet energy resolution and dijet mass resolution that they could offer. One way of investigating the necessary tools for such a Higgs search is to study a very similar decay to that of a low-mass Higgs particle: a Z boson decaying to a b quark and an anti-b-quark. This signal, not previously observed at the Tevatron, offers an ideal testbed in which to explore suitable triggering and analysis techniques. It also offers us the opportunity to further our understanding of b-quark jets in a hadronic environment, an element crucial to much of the physics at D0. To this end, the first search has been performed at D0 for the Z → b$ar{b}$ decay, using the initial 300 pb-1 of data from Run II. Triggers have been specifically designed and implemented for this purpose. Here we present evidence for Z → b$ar{b}$ decays. An excess of 1260 ± 130 (stat.) ± 260 (syst.) events is observed, which is in good agreement with Monte Carlo predictions and amounts to a Z → b$ar{b}$ signal of 4.3 standard deviations.

Book Synopsis Particle Physics in the LHC Era by : Giles Barr
Download or read book Particle Physics in the LHC Era written by Giles Barr and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text gives an introduction to particle physics at a level accessible to advanced undergraduate students. It is based on lectures given to 4th year physics students over a number of years, and reflects the feedback from the students. The aim is to explain the theoretical and experimental basis of the Standard Model (SM) of Particle Physics with the simplest mathematical treatment possible. All the experimental discoveries that led to the understanding of the SM relied on particle detectors and most of them required advanced particle accelerators. A unique feature of this book is that it gives a serious introduction to the fundamental accelerator and detector physics, which is currently only available in advanced graduate textbooks. The mathematical tools that are required such as group theory are covered in one chapter. A modern treatment of the Dirac equation is given in which the free particle Dirac equation is seen as being equivalent to the Lorentz transformation. The idea of generating the SM interactions from fundamental gauge symmetries is explained. The core of the book covers the SM. The tools developed are used to explain its theoretical basis and a clear discussion is given of the critical experimental evidence which underpins it. A thorough account is given of quark flavour and neutrino oscillations based on published experimental results, including some from running experiments. A simple introduction to the Higgs sector of the SM is given. This explains the key idea of how spontaneous symmetry breaking can generate particle masses without violating the underlying gauge symmetry. A key feature of this book is that it gives an accessible explanation of the discovery of the Higgs boson, including the advanced statistical techniques required. The final chapter gives an introduction to LHC physics beyond the standard model and the techniques used in searches for new physics. There is an outline of the shortcomings of the SM and a discussion of possible solutions and future experiments to resolve these outstanding questions. Book Synopsis Measurement of the D0 Meson Production in Pb–Pb and p–Pb Collisions by : Andrea Festanti
Download or read book Measurement of the D0 Meson Production in Pb–Pb and p–Pb Collisions written by Andrea Festanti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first measurement of charmed D0 meson production relative to the reaction plane in Pb–Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision of √sNN = 2.76 TeV. It also showcases the measurement of the D0 production in p–Pb collisions at √sNN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The measurement of the D0 azimuthal anisotropy with respect to the reaction plane indicates that low- momentum charm quarks participate in the collective expansion of the high-density, strongly interacting medium formed in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, despite their large mass. This behavior can be explained by charm hadronization via recombination with light quarks from the medium and collisional energy loss. The measurement of the D0 production in p–Pb collisions is crucial to separate the effect induced by cold nuclear matter from the final- state effects induced by the hot medium formed in Pb–Pb collisions. The D0 production in p–Pb collisions is consistent with the binary collision scaling of the production in pp collisions, demonstrating that the modification of the momentum distribution observed in Pb–Pb collisions with respect to pp is predominantly induced by final-state effects such as the charm energy loss.
