Book excerpt: This volume compares characteristics of Old English literature to ‘Matter of England’ romances to determine whether key aspects of the poetry of the former continued in these stories on into the Middle English period. First, the book demonstrates the contemplative tone, respect for nature, and communal mindset present via monastic and hagiographic traditions in Old English poetry, before arguing that the midland romances, King Horn and Athelston, also possess these characteristics. Ultimately, it reveals important aspects of the afterlife of Old English literature and culture in England. Some intriguing discoveries are detailed, including unexpected points of contact between the English and Arabs in both the pre- and post-Conquest periods, as shown by the etymology of Saracen diction in King Horn. Furthermore, comparisons with the dreamer in The Dream of the Rood and an examination of the Old English verb “þencan” used by the Saracen reveal a complicated characterization, which goes deeper than what may be expected for the stock pagan enemy in Middle English romance. The book also investigates the possibility that, in Athelston, there is a reference to the Viking Guthrum, revealing the complex associations that late medieval English culture might have had with its Viking/Anglo-Saxon past. Finally, while looking at Athelston through the lens of the Anglo-Saxon natural world, this study probes what feels like a very Old English sense of kenotic love (via St. Edmund). This is manifested in the promise of grace at the outset of the romance, one that oversees not only a chain of events leading to King Athelston’s final submission and repentance, but also the unification of disparate cultures and a leveling of hierarchies. These romances seem to imbue the stories with a spiritual component, a “concrete universal,” and signify metonymy similar to the elegiac hopeful longing and the communal in the Old English poetry.

Beginning with the period following Roman rule and ending in the century following the Norman Conquest, it surveys a period of fundamental social change, which included the conversion to Christianity, the emergence of the late Saxon state, and the development of the landscape of the Domesday Book. While an impressive body of written evidence for the period survives in the form of charters and law-codes, archaeology is uniquely placed to investigate the earliest period of post-Roman society - the fifth to seventh centuries - for which documents are lacking. For later centuries, archaeological evidence can provide us with an independent assessment of the realities of capital punishment and the status of outcasts. Andrew Reynolds argues that outcast burials show a clear pattern of development in this period. In the pre-Christian centuries, 'deviant' burial remains are found only in community cemeteries, but the growth of kingship and the consolidation of territories during the seventh century witnessed the emergence of capital punishment and places of execution in the English landscape. Locally determined rites, such as crossroads burial, now existed alongside more formal execution cemeteries. Gallows were located on major boundaries, often next to highways, always in highly visible places. The findings of this pioneering national study thus have important consequences on our understanding of Anglo-Saxon society. Overall, Reynolds concludes, organized judicial behaviour was a feature of the earliest Anglo-Saxon kingdoms, rather than just the two centuries prior to the Norman Conquest.

Book excerpt: How did Middle Saxon kings govern their estates, and how did the mechanism of early forms of regional administration work? A spectacular site on the outskirts of Higham Ferrers in Northamptonshire has demonstrated that archaeology can add significantly to the debate. Between 1993 and 2003, Oxford Archaeology undertook a major programme of survey and excavation on the outskirts of the town, uncovering extensive remains dating from the Middle Bronze Age to the late medieval period. This volume deals with the Anglo-Saxon and medieval remains, and concentrates on a large 8th-century complex of enclosures and buildings, along with other structures including a large malting oven. It is argued that this represents the infrastructure of a purpose-built tribute centre for a royal estate. The character of the material evidence indicates that wide variety of produce came into complex and was then redistributed rather than consumed on site. The centre administered judicial as well as economic affairs. Evidence of the human remains from an execution site was found - some of it possibly linked to the sudden demise of the tribute centre at the beginning of the 9th century. In addition, the evidence of a well-preserved Reduced Ware pottery manufactory is an indicator of the later role of the area as an industrial estate of the medieval borough of Higham Ferrers.

He shows how individuals perceived particular acts of violence and responded to them. These reactions, in turn, sparked central efforts to manage disputes and thereby establish law and order. Respectable litigation, however, never eclipsed the danger of direct action, often violent and physical.

This book examines the cultural heritage behind each of these pairings to show how poets repeatedly contrast essentially Norman and Anglo-Saxon values and ruling styles.
