Book excerpt: "Social stories are explained as a strategy most often utilized for decreasing inappropriate behaviors, or improving or increasing communication and social skills or interactions in children with autism. This thesis begins with a history and overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including Asperger's Syndrome. Instructions for writing and implementing social stories are outlined. They were originally introduced as an intervention strategy for students with autism by researchers in the 1990s. Various methods for implementing social stories either as a sole intervention or as part of an intervention package are considered, including the use of modern technology to present the social stories. Articles encompassing empirical research, generalization and maintenance findings, and evidence of the effectiveness of social stories as a sole intervention or as part of an intervention package, are reviewed in this thesis. Following detailed descriptions of these approaches, a summary of evidence-based practices and corresponding research results are provided."--leaf 4.
