If that same ball of foil is shaped into a boat, it floats! Why? And how is it possible that a huge ship made of steel can float? Answering these questions about density and flotation is David A. Adler's clear, concise text, paired with Anna Raff's delightful illustrations. Activities that demonstrate the properties of flotation are included.

Book excerpt: Innocent is set in the city of Ottawa in the 1970s, where blacks were not fully accepted into society. This story focuses on how the innocence of a young boy gets stolen by society and its flaws. His entire life, twelve-year-old African boy Andre Smit has been told that both his parents drowned in the bottom of a lake when he was an infant. With a broken story and no real answers, he cannot truly accept the mystery of his parent’s death. After spending over a decade in the same foster home, Andre gets adopted by a bitter white couple who use him as a slave. He experiences harsh racial prejudice both from the white couple, Mr. and Mrs. Collins, and from his fellow peers at his new school. He encounters bullying and rough treatment from the people around him, but his devotion to his artwork and drawings gives him hope and helps him see the sun behind the clouds.

Book excerpt: A sleepy community in the Tyne Valley of Northumberland. On the surface, all is peaceful and tranquil. There is a dedicated pastor, a hardworking landowner who loves the farming life, a young couple who are newcomers to the area and are renovating their new house, a couple who have recently bought the local pub who discover there are ghosts in the attic, a gay couple who are deeply in love, and a grandad who thinks he's still a young boy. However, beneath the surface, some complex issues simmer; a boy with confusing gender identity, a sixteen year old girl who is raped, a boy who is struggling with his fine motor skills. Surprisingly, despite these traumatic issues, a strong undercurrent of love and community pervades their lives; which enables them to weather the storms that beset them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Varieties of Religious Experience is certainly the most notable of all books in the field of the psychology of religion and probably destined to be the most influential [one] written on religion in the twentieth century," said Walter Houston Clark in Psychology Today. The book was an immediate bestseller upon its publication in June 1902. Reflecting the pluralistic views of psychologist-turned-philosopher William James, it posits that individual religious experiences, rather than the tenets of organized religions, form the backbone of religious life. James's discussion of conversion, repentance, mysticism, and hope of reward and fears of punishment in the hereafter--as well as his observations on the religious experiences of such diverse thinkers as Voltaire, Whitman, Emerson, Luther, Tolstoy, and others--all support his thesis. "James's characteristic humor, his ability to put down the pretentious and to be unpretentious, and his willingness to take some risks in his choices of ancedotal data or provocative theories are all apparent in the book," noted Professor Martin E. Marty. "A reader will come away with more reasons to raise new questions than to feel that old ones have been resolved."

It speaks powerfully to the modern debate on atheism and faith, in the most critically up-to-date edition available.

Book excerpt: William James' 'The Varieties of Religious Experience (Complete Edition)' provides a comprehensive exploration of the diversity of religious experiences individuals encounter. Written in a clear and accessible style, James delves into the psychological and philosophical aspects of religion, offering insights into the nature of mystical experiences, conversion, and the relationship between religion and science. Drawing from a wide range of religious traditions and personal narratives, James presents a nuanced understanding of spirituality that remains relevant in contemporary debates. This seminal work is a key text in the study of psychology of religion and the philosophy of spirituality. As a psychologist and philosopher, William James was deeply interested in the human mind and the nature of spiritual experiences. His background in both fields provided him with a unique perspective on the complexities of religious phenomena. With 'The Varieties of Religious Experience,' James sought to bridge the gap between subjective experiences and objective analysis, making a significant contribution to the understanding of spirituality. I highly recommend 'The Varieties of Religious Experience (Complete Edition)' to readers interested in exploring the psychological and philosophical dimensions of religion. James' insightful observations and thoughtful analysis make this book a timeless classic that continues to inspire scholars and seekers alike.

Book excerpt: Captivating stories of the places where human evil has left a nefarious mark, featuring stories from the podcast Lore—now a streaming television series—including “Echoes,” “Withering Heights,” and “Behind Closed Doors” as well as rare material. Sometimes you walk into a room, a building, or even a town, and you feel it. Something seems off—an atmosphere that leaves you oddly unsettled, with a sense of lingering darkness. Join Aaron Mahnke, the host of the popular podcast Lore, as he explores some of these dreadful places and the history that haunts them. Mahnke takes us to Colorado and the palatial Stanley Hotel, where wealthy guests enjoyed views of the Rocky Mountains at the turn of the twentieth century—and where, decades later, a restless author would awaken from a nightmare, inspired to write one of the most revered horror novels of all time. Mahnke also crosses land and sea to visit frightful sites—from New Orleans to Richmond, Virginia, to the brooding, ancient castles of England—each with its own echoes of dark deeds, horrible tragedies, and shocking evil still resounding. Filled with evocative illustrations, this eerie tour of lurid landmarks and doomed destinations is just the ticket to take armchair travelers with a taste for the macabre to places they never thought they’d visit in their wildest, scariest dreams. The World of Lore series includes: MONSTROUS CREATURES • WICKED MORTALS • DREADFUL PLACES Praise for World of Lore: Dreadful Places “Well-written, rooted in deep historical research, and ridiculously entertaining . . . Each chapter brings a creepy story from folklore to life. . . . Hair-raising stuff.”—SyFy Wire “Fans of the Lore podcast won’t want to miss this latest volume in the creator’s series, a collection of illustrated versions of both rare and well-known stories about ‘lurid landmarks and doomed destinations.’”—io9 “Dreadful Places is a delight for Lore fans and newbies alike. Book excerpt: March to the Grave is a very grim look at the horrors of war. Red Roses and White Flags delves deep into PTSD delirium. No Man's Land follows a fatally wounded soldier and tells of the importance of brotherhood. A Light Just Out of Range explores the chaotic and deplorable conditions of trench warfare. They Can Never Find Out might evoke empathy for a NAZI paranormal team. Guilt weighs heavy in The Blue Light as a wounded marine is haunted by the death of a child on the battlefield. Across The White Desert puts a small team against an unknown evil. Aftermath, the last story in this issue, is a clever parallel that I think would resonate with most veterans.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is often assumed that classical Sanskrit poetry and drama lack a concern with the tragic. However, as Bihani Sarkar makes clear in this book, this is far from the case. In the first study of tragedy in classical Sanskrit literature, Sarkar draws on a wide range of Sanskrit dramas, poems and treatises – much of them translated for the first time into English – to provide a complete history of the tragic in Indian literature from the second to the fourth centuries. Looking at Kalidasa, the most celebrated writer of Sanskrit poetry and drama (kavya), this book argues that constructions of absence and grief are central to Kalidasa's compositions and that these 'tragic middles' are much more sophisticated than previously understood. For Kalidasa, tragic middles are modes of thinking, in which he confronts theological and philosophical issues. Through a close literary analysis of the tragic middle in five of his works, the Abhijñanasakuntala, the Raghuva?sa, the Kumarasambhava, the Vikramorvasiya and the Meghaduta, Sarkar demonstrates the importance of tragedy for classical Indian poetry and drama in the early centuries of the common era. These depictions from the Indian literary sphere, by their particular function and interest in the phenomenology of grief, challenge and reshape in a wholly new way our received understanding of tragedy.

Book excerpt: The Best Nonfiction Masterpiece of the 20th Century? “There are two lives, the natural and the spiritual, and we must lose the one before we can participate in the other.” - William James, The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature The Varieties of Religious Experience: A Study in Human Nature is not a book about a specific religion. The author, psychologist Williams James does not try to convince the reader one religion is better than the other. He doesn’t even make a case for atheism and the scientific approach. The book is in fact about human nature and how we experience religion at a psychological level. Xist Publishing is a digital-first publisher.
