Book Synopsis Everyday Malay Phrase Book and Dictionary by : Thomas G. Oey

This book was released on 2004-05-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a travel size, easy–to–use Malay phrasebook, dictionary, and beginning Malay language book Bahasa Malaysia (literally "the Malaysian language") is based on Malay which is the mother tongue of the Malays of the Peninsula and the people of central eastern Sumatra. Malay is closely related to languages throughout Indonesia, the Philippines and the Pacific Islands, and it has been for centuries the lingua franca of Southeast Asia. The lessons in this book are prioritized, with more important words and phrases being give first, so that you may profit no matter how deeply into the book you go. By studying the first section only, you acquire a basic "survival" Bahasa Malaysia, and by mastering the first three sections you should be able to get around quite well on your own. In order to present each lesson clearly as a unit and reinforce learning, Malay vocabulary is often repeated. Colloquial Malay, which is the most commonly spoken and the most readily understood form of the language, is used here rather than "formal" Bahasa Malaysia. Care has been taken to include only vocabulary that has immediate practical application for visitors. By repetition and memorization of the materials, you will quickly gain a grasp of the language's basic elements. Rather than include long and tedious lists of words and phrases in the lessons themselves, we have appended at the back of the book a miniature bilingual dictionary that should be adequate for the needs of most tourists. At the end of the book you will also find additional information on the use of verb and noun affixes, and further suggestions to learn Malay. Everyday Malay includes: Over 2,000 of the most commonly used Malaysian words and phrases. A useful and concise Malay dictionary. Extensive notes on grammar and the Malay language. Cultural do's and dont's that will make your visit go smoothly. Knowing a few simple phrases of Malay opens up an entirely new and more fulfilling travel experience. Malaysians love it if you can communicate in their language, and in only a few short hours this book allows you to do just that!
Download or read book Malay Flashcards written by Flashcardo and published by Flashcardo. This book was released on with total page 9269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ebook contains all flashcards from our website, one every two pages. It is ideal for beginners and intermediate learners to acquire some of the most important initial words that make up the majority of everyday conversation. Various features like bidirectional listing make this flashcard ebook the perfect tool on your ebook reader to boost your language skills. This ebook is split into 4 chapters and contains a total of around 2000 vocabularies which you can also find on our website. Each of the words covers two pages. Page one represents the question in the form of the vocabulary you should translate. Page two delivers the answer with translation and additional information for that word if needed. To learn the vocabularies, simply go from page to page and study the words one by one. The 4 chapters in the book contain 2 sets of vocabularies, once learned from English to Malay (chapter 1 and 2), and after that from Malay to English (chapter 3 and 4). Within that, the first chapter has vocabularies ordered by topic whilest the second chapter has 1000 of the most common vocabularies you need to learn ordered by how often they are used in daily conversations. In addition to using this ebook, you can also go to our website and use the flashcards there to learn and test yourself. The most important part of using flashcards successfully is to use them daily. Studying 100 words a day every day of a week will have a much bigger impact than studying 700 words once a week. Once you know most words in a chapter, write down the ones you still have trouble with and concentrate on those few words several times a day. Once you have moved on to a later chapter, it is also good practice to come back to early chapters from time to time to make sure the easier words are still in your memory. Over time, you will figure out what works best for you. Good luck!

Download or read book Language, Capital, Culture written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singapore has been taken by many researchers as a fascinating living language policy and planning laboratory. Language and education policy in Singapore has been pivotal not only to the establishment and growth of schooling, but to the very project of nation building. Since their inception, ‘mother tongue’ policies have been established with two explicit goals. Firstly there is the development and training of human and intellectual capital for the expansion and networking of a Singaporean service and information economy. Secondly there is the maintenance of cultural heritage and values as a means for social cohesion and, indeed, the maintenance of community and regional social capital. These tasks have been fraught with tension and contradiction, both in relation to the conditions of rapid cultural, economic and political change in Asia and globally, but as well because of the tensions between the so called ‘world language English’ and Singapore’s three other official languages, Tamil, Malay and Mandarin. This has been complicated, of course, by the challenges of vibrant regional dialects and the emergence of Singlish as a powerful medium of community life.
