Book excerpt: "Mohammad Tareq Hasan's powerful and sensitive understanding of the situations of female garment workers in Bangladesh's clothing factories critically contextualizes commanding theoretical discourse grounding their insights but simultaneously demonstrating the limits to their understanding. Hasan in his masterly analysis shows how ethnography is not merely illustrative of theory but central to its construction." -Bruce Kapferer, Emeritus Professor, University of Bergen and Honorary Professorial Fellow, University College, London "Everyday Life of Ready-made Garment Kormi in Bangladesh is a rich ethnography of the lives of garment workers in Bangladesh. Hasan argues against the orthodox view of garment workers as the pawns of capitalism; instead, he shows how workers renegotiate capitalist agendas to create emancipatory opportunities. The book adds a new dimension to the growing literature on the garment industry by focusing on the female garment kormi as the agent of social change." -Lamia Karim, Professor of Anthropology, University of Oregon This book portrays the scene where corporate international trade agreements, a new neoliberal state regime, and a growing textile market have contributed to the becoming of a new class of Muslim female workers-who labor in Bangladesh's apparel export factories under conditions of neoliberal capitalism. The garment kormi-often abstracted by the homogenizing category of the "garment worker"-remain lost in the statistics of development and empowerment or contrarily exploitation. Thereby, focusing on the everyday lives of garment kormi, i.e., workers' stories than on the collective of garment workers as a category, this book at one front highlights the neoliberal structures of difference and inequality, and on the other reflects on the potential of egalitarianism and change in terms of novel ways of comprising and expressing life-worlds. It shows that the values in life and the structures that govern life, such as contemporary Bangladesh's neoliberal order, kinship relationality, and religiosity, are co-constitutive, multi-layered, and always on the move, never fixed. Mohammad Tareq Hasan is Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coercion and Wage Labour presents novel histories of people who experienced physical, social, political or cultural compulsion in the course of paid work. Broad in scope, the chapters examine diverse areas of work including textile production, war industries, civil service and domestic labour, in contexts from the Middle Ages to the present day. They demonstrate that wages have consistently shaped working people’s experiences, and failed to protect workers from coercion. Instead, wages emerge as versatile tools to bind, control, and exploit workers. Remuneration mirrors the distribution of power in labour relations, often separating employers physically and emotionally from their employees, and disguising coercion. The book makes historical narratives accessible for interdisciplinary audiences. Most chapters are preceded by illustrations by artists invited to visually conceptualise the book’s key messages and to emphasise the presence of the body and landscape in the realm of work. In turn, the chapter texts reflect back on the artworks, creating an intense intermedial dialogue that offers mutually relational ‘translations’ and narrations of labour coercion. Other contributions written by art scholars discuss how coercion in remunerated labour is constructed and reflected in artistic practice. The collection serves as an innovative and creative tool for teaching, and raises awareness that narrating history is always contingent on the medium chosen and its inherent constraints and possibilities. Praise for Coercion and Wage Labour Coercion and Wage Labour is a pioneering volume. It makes a well-founded break with the widespread misconception that wage labour is by definition free from coercion. The fourteen historical case studies ... lead to the conclusion that wage labourers too were subject to many forms of coercion and that usually their “freedom” was and is only relative. But something else makes this book special: throughout the text there are artistic illustrations that enter into a dialogue with the individual chapters, which in turn reflect on the images. This creates an inspiring interaction that complements the volume’s interdisciplinary nature. Marcel van der Linden, International Institute of Social History, Amsterdam

The positioning of enterprises of various sizes, non-governmental organizations, or public institutions is discussed and taken as a basis for consumer, client, and political decisions in a broad scope of topics. While the perspectives of customers, organizations, and further stakeholders on such developments have been highlighted under the label of 'ethical consumption' or vis-à-vis the fragility of organizations, the impact and effects on actors working in or for such organizations or subcontractors have so far only been dealt with tangentially or left as a blank spot. This volume turns its attention to the actors and organizational practices in order to trace the effects of these discourses on everyday lives. Similarly, the ethnographic case studies collected in this volume explore the extent to which everyday work life itself shapes discourses on the negotiation of morality in the present.

Book excerpt: In Bangladesh, around 4 million garment workers are working in more than five thousand garment factories all around the country. Most of the factories are situated in Dhaka and Chittagong divisions in Bangladesh along with the membership of BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exports Association) and BKMEA (Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exports Association). Among these garments, there are compliant garments that follow the code of conduct of workers' rights, and the rest of them are non-compliant garments that often violate the code of conduct of workers' rights. In this particular scenario, workers' have different experiences in their workplaces, which has significant impacts on their lifestyle. This study explores to understand garments workers' lifestyles briefly, through conducting qualitative interviews with 55 garment workers (32 workers were female and 23 workers were male) from 40 different garments in 6 different groups. In this report, we discuss the several areas of workers' life, which represent the scenarios of all garment workers, with the support of the literature review, and the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data. We identified the challenges and qualities of workers' daily life, and suggest a possible tool that might make their life easy and better. We examine five keynote areas of workers' life as social connectivity, financial stability, technology integration, job environment, and healthcare. The notable findings are:• The majority of the workers don't have a significant educational background; especially, female workers are lagging. These workers are migrated from low-income regions such as northern and southern regions of Bangladesh.• Workers have very good social connections with neighbors, co-workers, house owners, shop keepers, and local mobile financing agents.• Workers have a very low income, starting from BDT 8000/month (equivalent to USD 94.22) with numerous areas of expenses, including kids' education cost, monthly expenditures cost, house rent, etc. On the other hand, they struggle to save money on monthly basis with such expenses forlacking proper management of their salary where sometimes they make loans for expenses.• The adaptation of technology usage is very less in proportion to the availability of technology. They all are familiar with and have access to both feature phones and smartphones, and usage of basic calling applications is common.• Workers often struggle in getting a new job because of the traditional recruitment process. Apart from that, workers of non-compliant garments have several negative experiences while workers from compliant garments have very friendly and comfortable experiences in their workplaces.• The majority of the workers are not aware of personal healthcare and they avoid spending money on visiting doctors during their illness. To date, no such study explored these dimensions to understand the workers' life in a particular sector. This study comes up with a question that, do we able to support workers to get a better lifestyle? The findings of this report motivate us to suggest and design an easy user-friendly Bengali crowdsourcing platform that might reduce the basic daily complexities of the workers.

Book excerpt: Readymade garment industry is the prime foreign earning industry of Bangladesh where more than 4.2 million workers are working of which 90% workers are female who come from the rural areas of the country. The working conditions and the working lives of these female workers are hardly up to the standard. The working lives of these female workers are substantially disturbed by the unfavorable working conditions that lead to job dissatisfaction, job insecurity, and low productivity of the workers. These are due to not maintaining government compliances by these readymade garment (RMG) companies. Therefore, a serious concern has been raised by the national and international community regarding the working conditions and the working lives of these female workers of Bangladesh. Therefore, this paper aims at identifying the working conditions and the working lives of female readymade garment workers of Bangladesh. For conducting this study, both primary and secondary data were collected. Primary data were collected by using a structured questionnaire. A total of 267 female workers were interviewed for this study. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the present working conditions of the female workers and inferential statistical were used to identify the relationships between the overall working conditions and the working lives of the female workers. Results show that the female readymade garment workers of Bangladesh work under the suppressive working environment. Female workers are always exploited by their managers and supervisors due to gender difference and submissiveness. Managers also misbehave with them by capitalizing their illiteracy and submissiveness. Female workers are often disturbed by the male colleagues too at work place and outside the factory. They do not have freedom at work and have no promotion at work. This study suggests that the policymakers of this sector of industry should follow the industrial laws and create a favorable working environment which will be favorable for the female workers to work in this sector.

They are pain in body muscles, complexity arises from abortion, food poisoning, pruritus, eye strain, neck pain, hepatitis, frequent headache, cut injury, fatigue, common cold, numbness and tingling of fingers and arms, gastric pain and helminthiasis. The government along with other concern bodies should take necessary action to overcome the health problems of the workers so that they can contribute more for the development of the readymade garment industry of Bangladesh.

Book excerpt: Although, the economy of Bangladesh is primarily dependent on agriculture, Readymade Garment (RMG) industry has emerged as the largest earner of foreign income of Bangladesh in recent years. More than 75% of foreign earnings are coming from this very important sector of Bangladesh. Presently, more than four million workers are working in 4,500 RMG companies in which 90% are illiterate women came from the rural areas of Bangladesh (Islam & Muntaquimul Bari Chowdhuri, 2014). The policymakers and the employers of this sector claim that the growth of garment sector has helped employing a huge number of rural women that has subsequently developed their socioeconomic status in Bangladesh. But, it is a concern of the national and internal observers that the labor laws and other compliances like factory laws, industrial relations laws, employment laws, payment of wages laws, ILO standards, ethics applied in this sector are hardly followed by the RMG companies which are making the lives of these workers very difficult. Sometimes, these workers are exploited by employing more hours a day without the payment of overtime by capitalizing their illiteracy and submissiveness. Hence, this paper aims at identifying the level of application of the labor laws and other compliances in RMG industry of Bangladesh that is the only protective measures of this large number of female workers of this important sector of Bangladesh. A total of 238 workers of this sector were interviewed in this study with a structured questionnaire. Multivariate analysis techniques such as, Factor Analysis and Multiple Regression Analysis were used to analyze the data collected from the workers on the application of labor laws and other compliances of these companies. The results show that in case of measures for protecting sexual harassment there is a severe problem of the use of the labor laws in this sector followed by physical movement and access control of workers, exit and access path of the company, working hours, and counseling arrangements in the company. This study suggests that the readymade garment companies should address the sexual harassment issue seriously so that the workers will feel safe at their work. They also should focus more on the safety issues, working hours and counseling of the workers in order to make the working environment more favorable to the workers.

Book excerpt: This article is a literature review in which a comprehensive understanding is developed of the multiple and contemporary facets of the problem of gender inequality in international supply chains of ready-made garments (RMG). The main focus of the study is on the RMG manufacturing sector in Bangladesh, since this sector represents a hub in international RMG supply chains. The issue of gender inequality in the RMG sector represents a main concern of NGOs, the OECD, the ILO, national governments, international buyers and brands, and other stakeholders. Using a structured literature review method, literature is selected from various international academic sources in a systemic way. The selected literature is analysed by employing Lessig's analytical framework, developed as the New Chicago School. The authors apply this framework to identify which forces and constraints influence the situation of gender inequality in the Bangladeshi garment sector. The influencing factors are organised in the four categories acknowledged by Lessig: law, cultural norms, market and architecture. Through this lens of a regulatory ecology approach, various types of constraints are identified that need to be addressed in order to solve the issue of gender inequality in the RMG industry in Bangladesh. In addition, the Capabilities Theory of Martha Nussbaum provides a basis for the discussion on how to improve the situation of female garment workers in Bangladesh. Accordingly, this research contributes to a holistic and institutional understanding of the options of how to improve the status of gender equality in the Bangladeshi RMG sector. The options discussed cover legal, regulatory and semi-legal instruments and market behaviour of local RMG companies, international buyers and brands, NGOs and unions.
