Book excerpt: Every Closed Eye Ain't Sleep: African American Perspectives on the Achievement Gap examines the origins and perpetuation of the achievement gap from the perspective of the African American community. Instead of accepting the achievement gap as an inevitable matter of fact, Every Closed Eye Ain't Sleep questions the fundamental beliefs that perpetuate the gap. Drawing on dialogue with African American community members, Teresa Hill advances a framework for understanding a predominant African American view of the educational process. She then juxtaposes this framework with the norms perpetrated by the educational establishment to demonstrate how disagreements about the roles and responsibilities of parents, teachers and students affect community members' experiences in schools. Every Closed Eye Ain't Sleep opens a dialogue about the achievement gap on different terms, analyzes the gap as an issue of social justice, and provides educational leaders and policymakers with ways to engage in the productive dialogue necessary to improve education for African American children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of forty-eight, I thought my dreams were over. Depressed, physically ill and emotionally bruised, I had all but given up. I had no hope and felt destined to a life of misery and gloom. Then something happened, I began to hear a voice speak to me. Was I crazy? God doesn't speak to "ordinary" people, does he? Well, he was speaking to me. At first I didn't know what to think, what to do, but then He told me to look back over my life and tell Him what I saw. What I saw was not what I expected; what I saw was evidence of God's goodness throughout my life. That's when I began to thank and praise Him. From that day my life changed drastically, on every level, in every aspect. I began to look at life in a new way, a more positive way. The more positive I began to think, the more positive things started to occur in my life. Those conversations with God led to the writing of this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annie Ruth’s Truths is a collection of the “wisdom, warnings, and wake-up calls” of Annie Ruth Sharp, collected and written by her son, David Preston Sharp. Annie Ruth, having been raised by parents who sharecropped and lived on the same land in Mississippi where earlier relatives were slaves, took in the culture and communication style she heard around her – a style that was humorous and instructive, pointed and playful, serious and serendipitous. She then married it to her own precocious personality. Rarely do we see in print the wisdom and wit of Christian African-American female elders. These expressions are a creative response to the soul challenges of rural country life lived in the American Deep South. Annie Ruth, now in her mid 80s, still amuses and guides anyone within earshot with her quick-witted takes on daily living. But her words are not meant just for entertainment. They are meant to inspire, and to wake people up to themselves so that they can be better people. No one is above her guidance. As the wife of a Presbyterian pastor in Atlanta, Georgia, Annie Ruth found herself in settings ranging from high-powered politics and the wealthy to the marginalized and homeless. She speaks her truth to her family and friends, to those lacking ambition and to those with perhaps too much. Even today, no matter where she goes, Annie Ruth’s “truths” are always at the ready – even if the targets of her zingers are not.

Getting to know and have a relationship with my grandchildren was an obsession of mine. i would agonize every time I would ""lose"" one. I was busy during my young life, going to prisons, teaching, school, counseling"" so I am /was not a babysitter, Parents and children were welcomed at the home together. A story that embraces anyone who ever lived in a neighborhood, or feared a bully or ever wanted to love. It is a story about the extraordinary richness of ordinary-seeming people. On a journey to adulthood Carlos Jackson starts learning the art of living after he suddenly becomes smitten by Kamara, a young girl who visits her aunt next door. At a picnic, she places a single rose petal into Carlos’ hand and from this day on, roses follow Carlos through life until the last rose comes. Yet his enthrallment leads him into conflict with Blue Joe Davis, the neighborhood bully. And when he is left heartbroken by Kamara’s unexpected departure, Uncle Dan, an enigmatic old man from across the hall, comes to Carlos’ rescue. Unbeknownst to the neighborhood, Uncle Dan is the grandson of a Yoruba warrior and a master of Capoeira. Becoming the old man’s apprentice Carlos learns Capo-Kung, a martial arts hybrid reflecting art, beauty, harmony, patience, and integrity. Years later, Carlos and Kamara are reunited but Blue Joe also re-emerges bringing a new level of conflict. Set largely in the historic 1960’s, the story moves with Carlos through the urban streets of Cleveland and the lives of its colorful neighborhood folks, to war-torn rice fields of Vietnam and even further to far flung regions of Timbuktu. Sometimes you’ll be Carlos, sometimes, Kamara, and even Blue Joe perhaps. The story will surprise you. Its host of characters will delight you. It will sneak into your mind and heart. It will make you laugh and weep. Soulfully told with spectacular clarity, Last Rose of Summer flows like music you love. American writer Muhyiddin Shakoor, in his fresh and electrically exciting novel, is inviting us to row our boats gently down the stream and see that life truly is a dream.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary volume explores art, its development, and its role in the construction of knowledge. Presenting theory and research on artistic development as a cultural and creative endeavor, contributors examine the origins of human art during the Paleolithic cultural revolution, as part of a modern cultural transformation, in the growth of a creative artist, and in developing children. Target chapters expressing the disciplinary perspectives of psychology, archaeology, communications, education, and the performing arts are followed by commentaries from internationally acclaimed scholars of human development. Part 1 explores how cultures harness and exploit the arts to give expression to values, social practices, and traditions. This section traces the emergence of new art forms that arose during social unrest, including the symbolization of spiritual beliefs expressed on the walls of Paleolithic caves, and the racial identity and cultural values expressed in the media of the hip-hop generation. Part 2 examines the journeys of a composer and a group of students to highlight the process of becoming an artist and the role education plays in its development. The book concludes with a focus on the development of aesthetic appreciation and artistic activity in childhood and adolescence, including, for example, how a child’s developing theory of mind affects appreciation for the arts, and how developing empathy and emotional regulation contribute to the cognitive and affective underpinnings of acting in adolescence. As a whole contributors explore the developmental, sociocultural, and evolutionary processes that make the creation and experience of art possible. Intended for researchers and advanced students in both human development and the arts, this book will also serve as a textbook for advanced courses on psychology and the arts and/or special topics courses in cognitive and/or human development.

Book excerpt: Miss Georgia, a bright eyed highly intelligent young woman, was slain seven years prior to the brutal murder of young Emmett Till. Regarded as an innocent, she was ahead of her times in many ways but lagged behind, awaiting others to confirm her worth. On the Ides of August, the bush shook from a thunderous racist footprint, a lurid brazen code for well-rehearsed iniquity and indisputable impiety owned by those sharing an unverifiable relationship with humanity. Toting the onerous burden of this ghastly, dark and regaled secret for some fifty long years, holding back nothing, the author reveals rather raunchy dealings privately known and secretly inferred. Miss Georgias story was adversely impacted by an onslaught of bizarre characters and circumstances. Her cryptic demise was a symbol of the quintessence darkest of times, for the prevailing mentality coddled and coveted apathy, letting sleeping dogs lie where they lay. Swishing away moral correctness like a light dusting of coal cleverly disguised as discolored rhyme and poetic jive, far too many good folk turned a blind eye, overlooking overt wickedness. Hush now. Early one wintry morn, somebody was chanting at the Old Negro Cemetery. The apparition of the Ghost of Miss Georgia Past was spiritedly conceded. Yet, for her story to meritoriously support a national kitchen table conversation, ground breaking dialogue that will hopefully help bridge the gaping American rift, her voice must be resurrected with clarity of purpose. Miss Georgia has her say so, adding fresh perspective to an overdue discussion, one worthy of having, one fostering the ideal of racial parity and reconciliation. Her liberated voice can be heard loud and clear by those owning an impeccable sense of ought and naught, folk swayed by the bush that still shakes.
