Book excerpt: Dogs were never a part of Don Landy's life plan. He and his wife were devoted breeders of show cats, and a dog just didn't seem to fit in the picture. That was, until a brutal winter storm brought a very large, tired and hungry dog to the front door. After experiencing the heartbreak of finding their houseguest a forever home, they realized it was time to add a baby to the family, and before you could say 'impossible', they were the proud owners of a nine and a half week old German Shepherd named Sabrina. Over the next eleven years Sabrina went from one debilitating illness to another. They spent much of our time traveling from one specialist to another, watching and waiting as she underwent six major surgeries. But no matter how intense the pain, her disposition never changed. She loved everyone, and bounded through life with the spirit of a puppy and an ever present smile. Sabrina taught everyone she met the meaning of courage. Each and every day, she demonstrated that life was to be truly lived, for however long God chose to grant her. But the most important lesson Sabrina had to share was that of Unconditional Love. Join Don Landy for this dog's tale of happiness, togetherness, and the everlasting rewards of a pet's love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Paw Prints on Your Heart" provides the reader with a fascinating and humorous journey into the wonderful relationship between human beings and their four-legged friends-be they dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, etc. No matter which pet animal takes over your household, the relationship can best be described in one word-precious. This is pointed out time and time again by the stories described by author Jo Bruner. They are the types of stories that will warm the cockles of your heart, to use an old adage. Throughout her many years in business and as a homemaker, Jo has had a variety of pets, but not until she and her husband, Dick, moved to Florida did she, as she describes it, "strike it rich." During one of her early morning walks around the new neighborhood, Jo ran into one of her neighbors, Sue, who announced that she was adopting a new standard black poodle, Sam, and she also pointed out that Sam's breeder, Sondi, had other puppies in the same litter. Off went the Bruners to visit Sondi and the puppies. Soon after that, Jo and Dick returned home having just adopted a three-month-old cream colored poodle. The Bruners named their new boarder, Rocky, because, as Dick put it, "we didn't want a sissy poodle." Not too long after that, Jo and Rocky started on their walks around the neighborhood every early morning and early evening. They got to meet, greet and chat with a whole host of their neighbors, who, you guessed it, were also walking their canine friends, pals and "children." When she returned home after each walk, she would report on these meetings with her husband, who told her, "you've got a book there; but we may have to move out of the neighborhood." He was only kidding, of course. But read for yourself. Prompted by her observations during visits with her late mother, then in a nursing home, Jo decided to do something about the loneliness she could see in many of the home's other residents. Her plan: "Why not take Rocky into nursing homes and let his natural charm bring some sunshine to those people who were all alone and in need of a smile?" That's when she approached the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast and offered Rocky as a "volunteer." After considerable training, Rocky was certified as a therapy dog and he and Jo began visiting nursing homes; according to Jo, "A very rewarding experience." In 2003, the family expanded by one; a 2 month old, silver standard poodle, named Beau, was adopted. Join the Bruners on their travels throughout the United States and the Canadian Maritimes in their motor home. Both "boys" had a ball and since most people in RV's also travel with pets, Rocky and Beau did beaucoup socializing. Readers of "Paw Prints on Your Heart" will certainly enjoy sharing in their escapades and it will remind you of the wonderful times with your own special pet.

Book excerpt: HIGH MILEAGE HEARTS takes us back into the 20th century to days when if your dog lost the use of his hindquarters, he wasn't euthanized. Instead, he maneuvered about on a wheeled, home-built cart with a high-flying flag to pinpoint his location. The nine authors explore small town and rural living in a quieter, safer, more serene time, when fear meant the possibility of a snake dropping from the rafters rather than an act of terrorism, when a pharmacy security system was an oversized, rambunctious dog, not electronic surveillance. The authors share their quest for adventure, their quiet times, the fun and folly of their lives. The poetry addresses everything from humor to spirituality. Fiction is drawn from the imaginations and life experiences of the authors. We can't, nor perhaps would we want to, go back but we can cherish the way it used to be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vivid archive of memories, Beth Alvarado’s Anthropologies layers scenes, portraits, dreams, and narratives in a dynamic cross-cultural mosaic. Bringing her lyrical tenor to bear on stories as diverse as harboring teen runaways, gunfights with federales, and improbable love, Alvarado unveils the ways in which seemingly separate moments coalesce to forge a communal truth. Woven from the threads of distinct family histories and ethnic identities, Anthropologies creates a heightened understanding of how individual experiences are part of a larger shared fabric of lives. Like the opening of a series of doors, each turn of the page reveals some new reality and the memories that emerge from it. Open one door and you are transported to a modest Colorado town in 1966, appraising animal tracks edged into a crust of snow while listening to stories of Saipan. Open another and you are lounging in a lush Michoacán hacienda, or in another, the year is 1927 and you are standing on a porch in Tucson, watching La Llorona turn a corner. With vivid imagery and a poetic sensibility, Anthropologies reenacts the process of remembering and so evokes a compelling narrative. Each snapshot provides a glimpse into the past, illuminating the ways in which memory and history are intertwined. Whether the experience is of her own drug use or that of a great-great-grandmother’s trek across the Great Plains with Brigham Young, Alvarado’s insight into the binding nature of memory illuminates a new way of understanding our place within families, generations, and cultures.
