Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian Pilgrimage in Modern Western Europe is a commanding exploration of the importance of religious shrines in modern Roman Catholicism. By analyzing more than 6,000 active shrines and contemporary patterns of pilgrimage to them, the authors establish the cultural significance of a religious tradition that today touches the lives of millions of people. Roman Catholic pilgrimage sites in Western Europe range from obscure chapels and holy wells that draw visitors only from their immediate vicinity to the world-famous, often-thronged shrines at Rome, Lourdes, and Fatima. These shrines generate at least 70 million religiously motivated visits each year, with total annual visitation exceeding 100 million. Substantial numbers of pilgrims at major shrines come from the Americas and other areas outside Western Europe. Mary Lee Nolan and Sidney Nolan describe and interpret the dimensions of Western European pilgrimage in time and space, a cultural-geographic approach that reveals regional variations in types of shrines and pilgrimages in the sixteen countries of Western Europe. They examine numerous legends and historical accounts associated with cult images and shrines, showing how these reflect ideas about humanity, divinity, and environment. The Nolans demonstrate that the dynamic fluctuations in Christian pilgrimage activities over the past 2,000 years reflect socioeconomic changes and technological transformations as well as shifting intellectual orientations. Increases and decreases in the number of shrines established coincide with major turning points in European history, for pilgrimage, no less than wars, revolutions, and the advent of urban-industrial society, is an integral part of that history. Pilgrimage traditions have been influenced by -- and have influenced -- science, literature, philosophy, and the arts. Christian Pilgrimage in Modern Western Europe is based on ten years of research. The Nolans collected information on 6,150 shrines from published material, correspondence with bishops and shrine administrators, and interviews. They visited 852 Western European shrines in person. Their book will be of interest to many general readers and of special value to historians, cultural geographers, students of comparative religion, anthropologists, social psychologists, and shrine administrators.

Book excerpt: Surveys by the International Ecotourism Society reveal that more than three-quarters of American travelers feel it is important not to damage the environment they are visiting. Green Earth Guide: Traveling Naturally in Spain helps travelers to Spain accomplish that goal. Author Dorian Yates focuses exclusively on where to find things green and alternative in one of the world’s most popular travel destinations: local and organic foods, natural health care, ecological businesses, organic vineyards, renewable energy, yoga and meditation centers, national parks, public transportation, and other green places and services of interest. Written in a friendly, accessible style with personal anecdotes, how-to travel tips, and practical information, this second book in the series is aimed at helping travelers leave a smaller footprint wherever they venture. The book rescues readers who are accustomed to a certain level of green consciousness at home but end up compromising their values on vacation. Author Yates shows how to make the most environmentally beneficial choices for basic needs—food, shelter, health, exercise—while enjoying sites of ecological, historical, and natural interest along the way. Sample Book Insights: #1 The first traveler ever to pull up in his car with the engine already in Portugal but the petrol tank still in Spain was heard preaching to the fish in the river. He told them to gather around and advice him which language they spoke when they crossed the watery frontiers beneath. #2 The traveller was greeted by a sudden breeze that ruffled the waters. He fell silent, and soon after, nothing could be seen except for the river and its shores. He was forced to acknowledge his own shortcomings and learn about miracles. #3 The traveler can confirm that the Portuguese have a sense of humor, as the town of Miranda do Douro, located on the banks of the Duero River, has graffiti that is obscenely anti-Spanish. #4 The traveler was unable to contain his vanity. He came from so far away and was admitted to the mysteries simply because of his honest face. He began to question his motives. A journey is not supposed to be a matter of moving on, but of being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guidebook to cycling the Ruta Via de la Plata through western Spain describes the 930km route from Seville to the coastal city of Gijón in around 2 weeks (14 stages). A pilgrimage variant, the Camino Sanabrés, to Santiago de Compostela is also described (16 stages in total). Empty roads and gentle climbs make the route accessible to a wide range of bikes and cyclists. Both road and off-road versions are presented, and the guide shows how they can be combined to create a perfect touring, hybrid or gravel cycling trip. The guide includes leg-by-leg route descriptions, 1:150,0000 colour mapping, elevation profiles and helpful ride planners to show where riders can swop from the off-road to the road route. There is advice on equipment, travel and transporting your bike, alongside a list of accommodation contacts and a useful Spanish glossary. The Ruta Via de la Plata is one of Spain's most important pilgrim routes. The 2-week journey takes in 7 UNESCO world heritage sites (Seville, Mérida, Cáceres, Salamanca, Leon, Zamora, and Oviedo) with the famous pilgrimage site of Santiago de Compostela if the Camino Sanabrés is taken. There is lots of good-value accommodation available, from hostels to palaces, and plenty of chances to sample Spanish gastronomy.
