Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the Age of Jackson, New Hampshire was the one New England state that was consistently and firmly Democratic. In this book, Donald Cole points out the significant influence of New Hampshire Democrats on the national Jacksonian movement – an influence far out of proportion to the size of the state. Historians of the "consensus" school have theorized that Jacksonian Democracy bore little resemblance to Jeffersonian Republicanism, that Democrats differed little from their political opponents, and that issues were of no great significance in party politics. Mr. Cole differs sharply with these views. Analyzing the careers of Isaac Hill and Levi Woodbury, together the nucleus of the New Hampshire Jacksonian movement, he traces the continuous development of issues to show that in New Hampshire the Democratic Party of 1830 descended directly from the Republican Party of 1800. The author makes use of ample statistical evidence and traditional secondary sources to show that Jacksonian Democracy in New Hampshire appealed particularly to the common man. Radically different socioeconomic groups supported the two parties in the election of 1832. Democrats came from the poor, hilly, remote farming villages, while National Republicans inhabited the larger, more accessible and more prosperous communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Twenty-Two Cents an Hour, Doug Crandell uncovers the harsh reality of people with disabilities in the United States who are forced to work in unethical conditions for subminimum wages with little or no opportunity to advocate for themselves, while wealthy CEOs grow even wealthier as a direct result. As recently as 2016, the United States Congress enacted bipartisan legislation which continued to allow workers with disabilities to legally be paid far lower than the federal minimum wage. Drawing on ongoing federal Department of Justice lawsuits, the horrifying story of Henry's Turkey Farm in Iowa, and more, Crandell shows the history of the policies that have led to these unjust outcomes, examines who benefits from this legislation, and asks important questions about the rise of a disability industrial complex. Exposing this complex—which is rooted in profit, lobbying, and playing on the emotions of workers' parents and families, as well as the public—Crandell challenges readers to reexamine how we treat some of our most vulnerable fellow citizens. Twenty-Two Cents an Hour forces the reader to face the reality of this exploitation, and builds the framework needed for reform.

Book excerpt: Robert Pierce Forbes goes behind the scenes of the crucial Missouri Compromise, the most important sectional crisis before the Civil War, to reveal the high-level deal-making, diplomacy, and deception that defused the crisis, including the central, unexpected role of President James Monroe. Although Missouri was allowed to join the union with slavery, the compromise in fact closed off nearly all remaining federal territories to slavery. When Congressman James Tallmadge of New York proposed barring slavery from the new state of Missouri, he sparked the most candid discussion of slavery ever held in Congress. The southern response quenched the surge of nationalism and confidence following the War of 1812 and inaugurated a new politics of racism and reaction. The South's rigidity on slavery made it an alluring electoral target for master political strategist Martin Van Buren, who emerged as the key architect of a new Democratic Party explicitly designed to mobilize southern unity and neutralize antislavery sentiment. Forbes's analysis reveals a surprising national consensus against slavery a generation before the Civil War, which was fractured by the controversy over Missouri.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If, like me, you have been in a relationship with a narcissist (whether you have realised it or not) and come out the other side, you will likely have reached a point of registering that you are in a "no win situation" before being able to remove yourself for good. Unfortunately for me, by the time I came to this conclusion I had hit rock bottom. I was financially bankrupt and ended up leaving a hotel room in a foreign country that my wife and I were staying in, with nothing more than the clothes I had on, and barely enough money to get away with. By this point I was so desperate to escape that I left without my passport, even though I was in the middle of Bangkok, because she had been keeping it from me for many years. This being just one of the methods my wife used to stop me from leaving her. Understandably, people find it hard to fathom why I did not take off earlier and waited so long to finally go. The truth is that I tried to do just that many times during the course of our four-year relationship. And as anyone that has been in a similar situation can attest, it just isn't that simple. For one thing if you truly believe, as I did, that you are in love and have found your soul mate (for want of a better word) you will do almost anything to see the relationship succeed. But the fact is that even though you are in love with this person or perhaps because of it, you are still completely screwed. The narcissist will never change. I would even argue that they are incapable of doing so. They are simply too focused on their own needs and desires at any given time to be able to. The result is that you decide to be the one that changes and capitulates, because if you don't, then the relationship simply won't last. You reason that at some point you will have managed to morph into the person he or she proclaims to want. All the while the goal posts keep being moved further and further away, until the day one realises that no amount of changing or giving, will ever be enough to satisfy the narcissist. They will always want and need more. However this book is not a self-help book, or a how to guide. It simply tells a story that starts at the point of initial meeting with Eve the narcissist in question, and ends with an escape through the streets of Thailand. To anybody that has experienced a similar relationship many things will be very familiar, like the narcissists total lack of empathy, financial exploitation, violence, great sex and even love at times. Other things will probably be unfamiliar, like being involved in a so-called cult. Though through experience I have now come to suspect that all cult leaders must also be narcissists or perhaps some extreme narcissists also become cult leaders. Either way round they then use their natural charisma and power of persuasion over others to coral and cajole followers into not only doing their biding, but as minions they can use to control other people even further. If I had a single wish for this tale told in first person, it would be that beyond being an entertaining story, it could perhaps help someone in a similar situation recognise the signs of abuse sooner, rather than later. And that this story be a catalyst for an earlier removal from an ultimately futile relationship.

This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extant generalizations about the grammar of space rely heavily on the analyses of declarative sentences. There is a need to check whether these generalizations also hold in the domain of interrogation. To this end this book analyzes data from some 450 languages (including non-standard varieties). The focus is on paradigms of spatial interrogatives such as English where, whither and whence and their internal organization. These paradigms are checked for recurrent patterns of morphological mismatches (such as syncretism) and different degrees of complexity (e.g. the number of segments). The data-base consists of a large parallel literary corpus (Le petit prince and translations thereof) which is complemented by further sources of information such as descriptive grammars. The data are analyzed from a synchronic perspective. However, diachronic issues are addressed unsystematically, too. It is shown that the distribution of phenomena which characterize paradigms of spatial interrogatives are subject to areal-linguistic factors. This is the first typological study of spatial interrogatives. It provides new insights for students of the grammar of space, morphological paradigms, and language typology.
