In this intimate and moving memoir, Anthony shares the details of his struggles with depression and doubt, and encourages readers with the unique story of his search for purpose and identity. From growing up duty-bound to his name, to his time as a finalist and then talent producer on The Voice, Anthony explores the pressures he experienced as a child and as a young man in Hollywood. He describes the journey to his renewed faith in God and exposes the vast differences between what the world teaches us to value and how God values us. Anthony examines what his parents did right in raising him but also describes how they unknowingly missed his pain. Finally, he reveals how God orchestrated His plan to grow Anthony into a man who is in love with his life, his heritage, and his individual calling. Anthony has learned to embrace the incredible beauty of his unique voice. In Unexpected Places, he invites readers on their own journey to do the same.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Sonic Episteme Robin James examines how twenty-first-century conceptions of sound as acoustic resonance shape notions of the social world, personhood, and materiality in ways that support white supremacist capitalist patriarchy. Drawing on fields ranging from philosophy and sound studies to black feminist studies and musicology, James shows how what she calls the sonic episteme—a set of sound-based rules that qualitatively structure social practices in much the same way that neoliberalism uses statistics—employs a politics of exception to maintain hegemonic neoliberal and biopolitical projects. Where James sees the normcore averageness of Taylor Swift and Spandau Ballet as contributing to the sonic episteme's marginalization of nonnormative conceptions of gender, race, and personhood, the black feminist political ontologies she identifies in Beyoncé's and Rihanna's music challenge such marginalization. In using sound to theorize political ontology, subjectivity, and power, James argues for the further articulation of sonic practices that avoid contributing to the systemic relations of domination that biopolitical neoliberalism creates and polices.

Th ey didn't know they were buying something so sinister, so depraved, and so eternal. When Octavia talked outloud to herself in the house, that was okay, but when the house talked back, something should have triggered in her brain, that something was very, very wrong. But that was just the beginning. Th ere is a thin line between sanity and madness, and if the decision is left in the hands of the affl icted, what is real, and what isn't, becomes a hazy distinction. Octavia slips deeper and deeper, dangling on the thin thread of reality and fantasy. Day by day, she is taken in by the true prescence in the house. The couples once peaceful and loving relationship takes on many bizzare and terrifying twists and turns while living in the house. Soon, things are very much out of control, as Octavia becomes fi xated by the true enemy, the great deceiver. It knows no limits, will stop at nothing, using every depraved and perverse manner, to have an everlasting hold on Octavia.

He is not violent, although he does have a bad habit of making embarrassing deductions about the doctors. This sarcastic, hard-drinking man has deluded himself into thinking he is Edgar Allan Poe’s great detective, C. Auguste Dupin. For this, he has been put away in a stately mental hospital on the Hudson. But Crane is not as delusional as he appears. Though he may not be Dupin, he certainly is a detective—one of the greatest, and occasionally drunkest, of them all. Sent undercover to investigate the theft of an inmate’s fortune, Crane finds the institution not as comfortable as he had hoped. When his fellow patients start dying, he must solve the murders, or risk losing his sanity after all.

Book excerpt: Colonel Jensen could see the fallen Tinheads in the target area from the First Squad point man's visual feed. Jensen watched as the First Squad moved closer to The Tinheads. Something struck him as strange about what he saw; but, he couldn't quite put his finger on what. As he studied the pattern in which the destroyed Tinheads laid, it dawned on him why it looked so strange. The Tinheads were arranged in an unusually symmetrical heap of shredded metal torsos and limbs. Almost a perfect semicircle, thought Jensen. Then Jensen saw something that made him react instantly. One of the severed weapons appendages was moving. "Hit the deck," Jensen screamed. Almost simultaneously, The Spacemarines drove themselves into alien soil. At nearly the same instant a shielded Tachyon beam passed above Squad One. Suddenly, Tinheads started appearing from behind the mass of metal carnage. Few where whole, most where damaged, missing limbs even heads.

Book excerpt: Among the countless gangster films produced by Hollywood, few are as haunting, complex, or ingeniously crafted as White Heat (1948). Students of film history and screen writing will appreciate this treatment--an engaging study of teh various artistic elements that turned what might have been just another gangster film into an innovative classic of the genre and a model of cooperative filmmaking at its best. Crucial to White Heat's success, McGilligan stresses, was the rare manner in which every aspect of production coalesced: studio, script, cast, crew, and director.
