Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In February 1994, Broward County authorized Coastal Planning & Engineering, Inc. to provide services related to a feasibility study for the use of aragonite sand for beach renourishment in Broward County. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the engineering and environmental potential of the utilization of aragonite in upcoming beach renourishment projects in Broward County. Initially, a literature search was conducted to identify all previous reports and studies related to the use of aragonite material for beach renourishment. Relevant reports were reviewed and summarized as to their applicability to the current study. Concurrently, Federal and State regulatory and funding agencies were contacted to determine existing and potential objections and concerns relative to the use of aragonite for beach nourishment in Broward County. Local offshore sand resources were evaluated to determine the remaining quantities of offshore sand available for beach nourishment. Evaluations were made which analyzed the potential for the use of aragonite as a long-term solution to the problem of future depletion of Broward County's offshore sand resources. This analysis included an evaluation of combining the design and construction of future Segment Il and Segment Ill projects. Finally, recommendations were made as to the feasibility of the use of aragonite for upcoming beach nourishment projects in Broward County. Suggestions were made with regard to the development of engineering and environmental baseline and monitoring studies which would address the Federal and State agency concerns identified in the earlier sections of this study."--Page 1.

Book excerpt: Erosion is experienced by most coastlines worldwide, and it is usually attributed not only to sea level rise but also to the retention of sand in dams, the occupation of dry beaches by urbanized areas, the mining of sand as a building material for construction, and so on. Beach nourishment has evolved as the favored erosion-mitigation strategy in many areas of the world. The increasing number of people living on the coast, the safety of those people, and the high values of coastal properties are all factors that have made beach nourishment a cost-effective strategy for managing erosion in many locations. However, a new scenario of sand scarcity and environmental care has arisen in recent decades. There have been many different and interesting cases of various aspects of beach nourishment in recent years. The purpose of this invited Special Issue is to publish the most exciting experience and research with respect to this topic. Thus, novel techniques for designing, executing, and controlling these kinds of works as well as different case studies and their monitoring results and conclusions have been included, in order to present an updated state of the art for marine scientists, researchers, and engineers.
