This book was released on 1995 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The regional aquifer system of the eastern Snake River Plain is an important component of the hydrologic system in eastern Idaho. The aquifer was thought to be the largest unified ground-water reservoir on the North American continent but is probably second to the Floridian aquifer in the southeastern United States. Flow in the aquifer is from major recharge areas in the northeastern part of the plain to discharge areas in the southwestern part. A comprehensive analysis of the occurrence and movement of water in the aquifer was presented by Garabedian. The analysis included a description of the recharge and discharge, the hydraulic properties, and a numerical model of the aquifer. The purposes of this report are to: (1) describe compartments in the aquifer that function as intermediate and regional flow systems, (2) describe pathlines for flow originating at or near the water table, and (3) quantify traveltimes for adjective transport originating at or near the water table. The model constructed for this study and described in this report will aid those concerned with the management and protection of the aquifer. The model will serve as a tool to further our understanding of the aquifer and will aid in assessing the needs for future flow and transport studies of the aquifer.

Book Synopsis Gallipolis Lock Intake Vortex Study, Ohio River by : Robert A. Davidson
Download or read book Gallipolis Lock Intake Vortex Study, Ohio River written by Robert A. Davidson and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existing Gallipolis Locks are located on the Ohio River at mile 279.2. Because of their location on an inside bend, the orientation for approach channels, velocity currents in the river, and the design of the approach walls, entry of downbound tows into the lock is hazardous and time consuming during periods of high flow. As a result of increasing traffic and tow sizes, these locks have become a serious problem to vessel movement along the Ohio River. Replacement locks will be constructed in the near future to alleviate these problems. Tests were conducted on a 1:25-scale model that reproduced 2,500 ft of the Ohio River beginning 188 ft upstream of the existing lock guide wall. Approximately 250 ft of the width of the river was reproduced. This model was used to evaluate the performance of the intake structures for the new locks. Two different alternate plans for the filling of the locks were tested. One plan consisted of filling the lock through long culverts extending from the river to the lock chamber. The other plan consisted of an intake canal extending from the river to the guide wall. Two intakes were located on the riverward side of the new lock approach wall, and one intake was located in the filling canal. Air-entraining vortices developed at the intake structure in both plans. The air-entraining vortices observed in both plans were eliminated by modification to the intake structure.

Book Synopsis Groundwater-Flow Model of the Ozark Plateaus Aquifer System, Northwestern Arkansas, Southeastern Kansas, Southwestern Missouri, and Northeastern Oklahoma by : U.S. Department of the Interior
Download or read book Groundwater-Flow Model of the Ozark Plateaus Aquifer System, Northwestern Arkansas, Southeastern Kansas, Southwestern Missouri, and Northeastern Oklahoma written by U.S. Department of the Interior and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To assess the effect that increased water use is having on the long-term availability of groundwater within the Ozark Plateaus aquifer system, a groundwater-flow model was developed using MODFLOW 2000 for a model area covering 7,340 square miles for parts of Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. Vertically the model is divided into five units. From top to bottom these units of variable thickness are: the Western Interior Plains confining unit, the Springfield Plateau aquifer, the Ozark confining unit, the Ozark aquifer, and the St. Francois confining unit. Large mined zones contained within the Springfield Plateau aquifer are represented in the model as extensive voids with orders-of-magnitude larger hydraulic conductivity than the adjacent nonmined zones.

Book Synopsis Hydrogeology of Crystalline Rocks by : I. Stober
Download or read book Hydrogeology of Crystalline Rocks written by I. Stober and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1999-12-31 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrogeology of Crystalline Rocks deals with deep groundwater in the granite and gneiss basement of the continents. It has become evident during the past years that highly mineralized water is present in an interconnected fracture network of the basement. Thus, the upper part of the crust of the continents can be viewed as an aquifer and investigated with tools common in hydrogeology. This book presents accounts on water-conducting features of crystalline rocks and summarizes the hydraulic properties of the basement. The volume includes reviews, new data and research on the often remarkable chemical composition of deep groundwater. Microbial processes in the deep basement aquifer are probably more important than previously thought. Two contributions focus on this recent extension of research of the biosphere to greater depth in the Earth. This book represents the first multidisciplinary and integrated account of deep groundwater hydrology in crystalline basement. It is of interest to hydrologists and hydrogeologists working with water in crystalline rocks, but also to solid earth geophysicists, geochemists and petrologists with an interest in fluids in the crust. Scientists involved in nuclear waste disposal programs and geothermal energy development will find a wealth of stimulating ideas in this volume.
