Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seismic Pavement Analyzer (SPA) is a device for nondestructive evaluation of pavements. This study examines the applicability of the SPA in pavement structural evaluation, detection of defects and distresses, and other uses relevant for pavement evaluation and condition monitoring. With respect to the equipment itself, the objectives were to examine the robustness and consistency of the SPA hardware and software, and the soundness of the seismic methods implemented in the device. A number of flexible and rigid pavements in New Jersey were tested, with specific attention given to pavement profiling and detection of voids or loss of support under rigid pavements.

This book was released on 1993 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seismic Pavement Analyzer (SPA) is an instrument designed and constructed to monitor conditions associated with pavement deterioration. It measures voids or loss of support under a rigid pavement, moisture infiltration in asphalt concrete pavement, fine cracking in pavements delamination of overlays, and aging of asphalt. is report describes the device and summarizes the usefulness of the equipment in maintenance activities. The operation of the SPA to determine different types of distress precursors is briefly illustrated. This report discusses results from several field tests. The specifications and design of different components of the device and a manual of operation are presented in a companion report.

Book Synopsis Seismic Pavement Analyzer Operations Manual with Technical Specifications by : Mark Richard Baker
Download or read book Seismic Pavement Analyzer Operations Manual with Technical Specifications written by Mark Richard Baker and published by Strategic Highway Research Program (Shrp). This book was released on 1993 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes an instrument for monitoring conditions associated with pavement deterioration that was designed and constructed as part of the Strategic Highway Research Program. The conditions measured are voids or loss of support under a rigid pavement; moisture infiltrating asphalt concrete pavement; fine cracking in pavements; delamination of overlays; and aging of asphalt. These conditions of deterioration are determined by estimating Young's and shear moduli in the pavement, base, and subgrade from the wave propagation measurements. The details of the instrument are described. This report includes a user's manual along with the technical specifications for the device.
Book Synopsis Structural Materials Technology by : Sreenivas Alampalli
Download or read book Structural Materials Technology written by Sreenivas Alampalli and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-02-29 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth Structural Materials Technology NDT Conference was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with over sixty speakers presenting on a wide variety of topics. The goal of this conference was to inform engineers and researchers of the new nondestructive testing/nondestructive evaluation (NDT/NDE) technologies and techniques available for use in transportation construction. The use of alternative materials is challenging NDT/NDE professionals to develop new methods or modify existing techniques to address quality control, quality assurance, and long-term monitoring of structures built or strengthened with these materials. One such alternative is fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) products. This conference included papers on this topic and a panel discussion that focused on the future of NDT/NDE technologies for structures built or rehabilitated with FRP composites. These proceedings contain the 62 papers that were presented at the conference, arranged according to session number. An author index is included.

Book excerpt: During the past 25 years, the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences, have carried out a wide variety of activities to improve understanding of the challenges in containing and reducing ethnic conflicts, violent extremism, and terrorism. Roots and Trajectories of Violent Extremism and Terrorism provides an overview of this cross-ocean program, which has involved American and Russian scientists, engineers, and medical professionals from a large number of government agencies, leading research institutions, think tanks, educational institutions, analytical centers, and consulting and commercial firms in the two countries. This report highlights challenges addressed by the academies over many years that remain of current interest as the U.S., Russian, and other governments continue to cope with old and new forms of aggression that threaten the livelihood of populations at home and abroad.

Book Synopsis Toward Infrastructure Improvement by : National Research Council
Download or read book Toward Infrastructure Improvement written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1994-02-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book advises the federal government on a national infrastructure research agenda. It takes the position that the traditional disciplinary and institutional divisions among infrastructure modes and professions are largely historical artifacts that impose barriers to the development of new technology and encourages the government to embrace a more interdisciplinary approach. In order to be practical, the study focuses on infrastructure technologies that can be incorporated into or overlay current systems, allow for alternative future alternative future urban development, and are likely to have value cutting across the distinct functional modes of infrastructure. Finally, the report is organized according to seven broad cross-cutting areas that should promote interdisciplinary approaches to infrastructure problems: systems life-cycle management, analysis and decision tools, information management, condition assessment and monitoring technology, the science of materials performance and deterioration, construction equipment and procedures, and technology management.

Book Synopsis Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences by : Wade H. Shafer
Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
