Book Synopsis Genetic Resources of Phaseolus Beans by : Paul Gepts
Download or read book Genetic Resources of Phaseolus Beans written by Paul Gepts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period following the second world war has witnessed an expanding commitment to incr~ased food production in tropical countries. Public and private initiatives at the national and international levels have led to the creation of programs geared specifically towards the improvement of food crops in tropical conditions. Examples of this increased commitment are the network of international agricultural research centers and numerous bilateral aid projects. As a consequence, crop improvement has become a truly worldwide endeavor, relying on an international network of institutions and collaborators. This holds also for Phaseolus beans. Following the discovery of the Americas, Phaseolus beans became distributed on all six continents. Yet, until not so long ago, most of the research on Phaseolus improvement took place in developed countries. In recognition of the nutritional importance of Phaseolus beans in developing countries, this has changed considerably in the last years, principally perhaps through the activities of the Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT) and the International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR). Consequently, the scope of the research on Phaseolus has broadened considerably and the number of Phaseolus researchers is larger than ever before.

Book Synopsis Plant Breeding for Biotic Stress Resistance by : Roberto Fritsche-Neto
Download or read book Plant Breeding for Biotic Stress Resistance written by Roberto Fritsche-Neto and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experience shows that biotic stresses occur with different levels of intensity in nearly all agricultural areas around the world. The occurrence of insects, weeds and diseases caused by fungi, bacteria or viruses may not be relevant in a specific year but they usually harm yield in most years. Global warming has shifted the paradigm of biotic stresses in most growing areas, especially in the tropical countries, sparking intense discussions in scientific forums. This book was written with the idea of collecting in a single publication the most recent advances and discoveries concerning breeding for biotic stresses, covering all major classes of biotic challenges to agriculture and food production. Accordingly, it presents the state-of-the-art in plant stresses caused by all microorganisms, weeds and insects and how to breed for them. Complementing Plant Breeding for Abiotic Stress Tolerance, this book was written for scientists and students interested in learning how to breed for biotic stress scenarios, allowing them to develop a greater understanding of the basic mechanisms of resistance to biotic stresses and develop resistant cultivars.

Download or read book The Common Bean Genome written by Marcelino Pérez de la Vega and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides insights into the genetics and the latest advances in genomics research on the common bean, offering a timely overview of topics that are pertinent for future developments in legume genomics. The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is the most important grain legume crop for food consumption worldwide, as well as a model for legume research, and the availability of the genome sequence has completely changed the paradigm of the ongoing research on the species. Key topics covered include the numerous genetic and genomic resources, available tools, the identified genes and quantitative trait locus (QTL) identified, and there is a particular emphasis on domestication. It is a valuable resource for students and researchers interested in the genetics and genomics of the common bean and legumes in general.

This book was released on 2018-04-01 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book entitled “Disease Problems in Vegetable Production” 2nd edition, is specifically prepared for under and post graduate students in Agriculture/ Horticulture and range of professionals including teachers, researchers, extension plant pathologists and elite vegetable growers. The book gives a comprehensive over-view of economic importance, symptomatology, etiology, pre-disposing factors and management of vegetable diseases employing cultural, biological, host resistance, plant extracts and chemical methods as such and in anintegrated approach so that the ravages due to the diseases remain below economic threshold level. A total of 19 chapters dealing with important diseases of vegetables like potato, tomato, crucifers, cucurbits, pea, French bean, chillies and bell pepper, onion, garlic, eggplant, carrot, sugar beet, colocasia, okra and leafy vegetables have been compiled in this book. Two new chapters on diseases of ginger and diseases of vegetables under protected cultivation as well as some important diseases of different vegetable crops left out in the first edition have been added in this edition. Besides, the book also includes chapters on common pathogens of vegetable crops, disease problems in nurseries, post harvest diseases and diseases caused by nematodes. All chapters have been updated in the light of available literature up to 2017. Symptoms, disease cycles of important diseases and different structures of pathogen(s) have also been given in the book that will not only help in better diagnosis and understanding of the perpetuation and spread of the causal pathogens but will also help in the management of these diseases more effectively. Coloured photographs of disease symptoms have also been included for easy identification of vegetable diseases.
