Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to this investigation, when a full-scale RBC plant design is based on the essential controlling variables of influent soluble BOD concentration, wastewater temperature, number of disc stages, surface hydraulic loading, and % BOD removal requirement, the preliminary design criteria developed from pilot plant study cannot be directly employed for design. A scale-up factor should be used. This factor was successfully determined by the model proposed by Wu et al. Its relation to wastewater temperature was mathematically formulated by conducting non-linear least squares regression analysis on both full-scale and pilot-scale data previously reported by other investigators. It is apparent that the process scale-up increases from 1.067 at T = 3 C to 1.227 at T = 25 C. However, a decrease in the scale-up factor was found when the temperature exceeded 25 C. This study shows the effect of process scale-up on the selection of hydraulic loading for full-scale design is significant when the wastewater temperature and hydraulic loading determined during the pilot study are high.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The total organic loading approach to design of RBC's previously developed by the authors in 1972, has been presented in detail and compared to other design approaches. The advantages and benefits of this RBC design method compared to other existing design approaches has been demonstrated. And yes, the question of which parameter, hydraulic loading, organic concentration or total organic loading, to use for proper design and operation of the RBC process has been answered. Any design method based on zero, first, or second order rate kinetics will be limited to loadings conditions within a specific loading range for design of RBC's. Design in terms of first order reaction kinetics will require determination of two separate reaction rate constants. Depending on the operating conditions or loading condition of an RBC, the kinetic removal rates through the system can be shown to follow apparent zero, first, or second order reaction rate kinetics. Monod kinetics also predicts the maximum BOD removal rate observed in RBC's.

Book Synopsis Application of Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) Process for Treatment of Wastewater Containing a Firefighting Agent (AFFF) Aqueous Film Forming Foam by : Susan Landon-Arnold
Download or read book Application of Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) Process for Treatment of Wastewater Containing a Firefighting Agent (AFFF) Aqueous Film Forming Foam written by Susan Landon-Arnold and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to determine the feasibility of treating wastewater containing aqueous film forming foam (FC-780) by an aerobic RBC. The preliminary data presented here demonstrates that FC-780 is conducive to aerobic bioconversion and removal with a properly adapted RBC unit. A significant reduction in COD, BOD and TOC has been achieved in synthetic wastewater containing up to 1000 ppm COD of FC-780. It is possible that FC-780 loading may be increased further and that higher reduction of the parameters may be obtained by changes inflow rates and contact times. These possibilities are being actively addressed in preparation of scale up for pilot plant operation.
