Book excerpt: The principal weakness in the performance evaluation of water treatment filtration technology for particle removal to date has been the failure to characterize the particles in suspension in influent and treated water. The direct microscopic count may be used in water treatment plants to evaluate total bacterial removals, observe seasonal (temperature) effects on water treatment plant process efficiency and estimate the removal of planktonic versus particle-associated bacteria. Comparisons between the direct microscopic count and turbidity, total coliform, heterotrophic plate count and electronic particle counting are made based on recent studies at the Capital City Water Treatment Plant, Jefferson City, Missouri. The direct microscopic count yields information on the reduction of total bacterial cells, planktonic and particle-associated bacteria, algal cells, nematodes and total number of particles larger than 3.0 ?m. The removal of the turbidity causing solids does not correspond to the reduction of biotic particles. As a result there are marked differences in turbidity and microbial reductions during treatment. The direct microscopic count has been judged to provide one of the most basic and fundamental measures of bacterial ecology because it provides an estimate of total bacterial population. Since it has been previously demonstrated to be rapid, specific, sensitive and accurate, it has now begun to find application in observing the removals of a wide range of particles during water treatment.

Book excerpt: Water treatment is a growing field in North America, with seventy US states and localities and ten Canadian provinces requiring certification for water treatment plant operators. This book provides a step-by-step look at the most current water treatment technologies, balancing academic theory and professional practice. A compilation of studies conducted over the past decade at the Bloomington, Illinois Water Treatment Plant, it presents studies that are useful as templates for comparable long-term studies at other water utilities. This is an unparalleled gathering of techniques, processes, and data, including test results for every potential taste and odor control method.

Book excerpt: Laser diode particle counting technology and analytical measurements were used to evaluate a pilot-scale reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment system for removal of particulate matter and sub-picocurie low-level radionuclides. Stormwater mixed with Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) effluent from the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site (RFETS), formerly a Department of Energy (DOE) nuclear weapons production facility, were treated. No chemical pretreatment of the water was utilized during this study. The treatment system was staged as follows: multimedia filtration, granular activated carbon adsorption, hollow tube ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis membrane filtration. Various recovery rates and two RO membrane models were tested. Analytical measurements included total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), gross alpha ([alpha]) and gross beta ([beta]) activity, uranium isotopes 233234U and 238U, plutonium 23924°Pu, and americium 241Am. Particle measurement between 1--150 microns ([mu]) included differential particle counts (DPC), and total particle counts (TPC) before and after treatment at various sampling points throughout the test. Performance testing showed this treatment system produced a high quality effluent in clarity and purity. Compared to raw water levels, TSS was reduced to below detection of 5 milligrams per liter (mg/L) and TDS reduced by 98%. Gross [alpha] was essentially removed 100%, and gross [beta] was reduced an average of 94%. Uranium activity was reduced by 99%. TPC between 1-150[mu] were reduced by an average 99.8% to less than 1,000 counts per milliliter (mL), similar in purity to a good drinking water treatment plant. Raw water levels of 23924°Pu and 241Am were below reliable quantitation limits and thus no removal efficiencies could be determined for these species.

Book excerpt: As EPA standards for water quality have tightened in recent years, the need to more accurately assess filter performance and improve the overall treatment process has led to increased demand for the high sensitivity provided by particle counters. One particle counter can give you more data than a dozen turbidimeters-if you know how to sort through
