Book excerpt: This paper presents the results of a simulator study conducted to compare and validate various ride quality prediction methods for use in assessing passenger/crew ride comfort within helicopters. Included are results quantifying 35 helicopter pilots' discomfort responses to helicopter interior noise and vibration typical of routine flights, assessment of various ride quality metrics including the NASA ride comfort model, and examination of possible criteria approaches. Results of the study indicated that crew discomfort results from a complex interaction between vibration and interior noise. Overall measures such as weighted or unweighted root-mean-square acceleration level and A-weighted noise level were not good predictors of discomfort. Accurate prediction required a metric incorporating the interactive efefcts of both noise and vibration. The best metric for predicting crew comfort to the combined noise and vibration environment was the NASA discomfort index. (Author).

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to measure the physiological and performance effects of repeated exposures to CH-46A noise and vibration. Six helicopter pilots were tested under seven 40-minute noise/vibration flights in a multiple-stress chamber. Data were obtained on seven performance and twelve physiological measures. The performance measures involved tests of two-dimensional tracking, warning light monitoring, meter reading, visual acuity, and hearing. The physiological measures were heart rate, respiratory rate, axillary temperature, urine analysis, blood analysis, and stool examination. No evidence of performance or physiological degradation was observed between the first and last flights."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Noise levels inside military helicopters generally exceed noise exposure limits established by DOD Instruction 6055.12, "Hearing conservation" (1991). Noise levels in helicopters with higher load capacities such as the CH-47, CH-46, and H-53 are extremely high and sometimes exceed the helmet's capability to provide adequate hearing protection for crewmembers. Noise compromises communication because of inadequate speech signal to noise ratio at the ear (Mozo, Murphy, and Ribera, 1995; Ribera et al., 1996; Mozo and Murphy, 1997; and Staton, Mozo, and Murphy, 1997). Use of combination protection, earplug in addition to the helmet, does provide the necessary hearing protection, but further compounds the problems associated with communications capability. While active noise reduction (ANR) provides exceptional low frequency hearing protection, it does little or nothing to improve protection for frequencies above 800 hertz. A U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL) report (Mozo and Murphy, 1997) shows ANR does improve speech intelligibility when worn alone, but both hearing protectiOn and speech intelligibility are degraded when worn with ancillary equipment such as spectacles and chemical biological (CB) mask. Aircraft modification, system cost, lateral impact, weight, and others factors should be evaluated carefully when considering the use of ANR in the helicopter environment. The communications earplug (CEP) shown in the figure is a device which incorporates a miniature earphone with foam earplug and can be worn in combination with the aviator's helmet. Calculations show the CEP provides adequate hearing protection for 8 hours duty even in the high noise levels found in the H-53. The device also provides voice communication intelligibility which approaches asymptotic limits near 100 percent in those high noise environments. The system is lightweight, cos.

Book excerpt: Since the original publication of 'Bramwell's Helicopter Dynamics' in 1976, this book has become the definitive text on helicopter dynamics and a fundamental part of the study of the behaviour of helicopters. This new edition builds on the strengths of the original and hence the approach of the first edition is retained. The authors provide a comprehensive overview of helicopter aerodynamics, stability, control, structural dynamics, vibration, aeroelastic and aeromechanical stability. As such, Bramwell's Helicopter Dynamics is essential for all those in aeronautical engineering.THE single volume comprehensive guide for anyone working with helicopters Written by leading worldwide experts in the field
