This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the use of fire modeling increases in support of day-to-day nuclear power plant (NPP) applications and fire risk analyses, the importance of verification and validation (V&V) also increases. V&V studies build confidence in a model by evaluating its underlying assumptions, capabilities, and limitations, and quantifying its performance in predicting the fire conditions that have been measured in controlled experiments. This volume documents a V&V study for the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model, for applications relevant to NPPs. Guidance has been provided by ASTM E 1355, Standard Guide for Evaluating the Predictive Capability of Deterministic Fire Models, including the basic structure of this report. FDS was developed, and is maintained, by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Version 4 was officially released in July 2004, and several minor updates had been released as of the time of publication of this report. All of the simulations performed for the current V&V study were done with Version 4.06. With support from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the FDS Technical Reference Guide for Version 4 was rewritten to follow the basic outline suggested by ASTM E 1355. However, the Guide does not specifically address NPPs. The primary purpose of this report is to document the accuracy of FDS in predicting the results of six sets of large-scale fire experiments that are relevant to NPPs. These results are found in Appendix A and discussed in Chapter 6 of this report. Chapters 2 through 5 provide brief summaries of corresponding chapters within the FDS Technical Reference Guide, which discuss the underlying theory and the numerical methods.
Book Synopsis Report of Experimental Results for the International Fire Model Benchmarking and Validation Exercise #3 by : nist
Download or read book Report of Experimental Results for the International Fire Model Benchmarking and Validation Exercise #3 written by nist and published by . This book was released on 2014-01-08 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the NationalInstitute of Standards and Technology (NIST) are participating in an International Collaborative Fire Model Project (ICFMP) to assess and validate fire computer codes for nuclear power plant applications. This assessment is being conductedthrough a series of benchmarking and validation exercises. The goal of the present study is to provide data from a large-scale fire test series of a simulated nuclear power plant cable room. The experimental configuration was designed to mimic acable room including realistic ventilation, a door, an electrical junction box, as well as vertically and horizontally aligned cables and cable trays. The experiments consisted of hydrocarbon spray fires varying from 350 kW to 2 MW in heat release rate burning in a single compartment 7 m wide, 22 m long, and 4 m tall. Information on the values of the fuel flow, measured fuel flow rates, supply and exhaust ventilation flows, ambient conditions and compartment leakage needed tofully specify the boundary conditions for implementation of the fire models are included. The experimental results were composed of 15 tests with more than 370 channels of data. The measurements reported here include the following: * Heatrelease rates * Compartment pressure * Radiative and total heat flux at various targets in the compartment * Surface and core cable temperatures and a PVC slab temperature * Hot gas layer (HGL) temperature, depth, soot density, andconcentrations of oxygen, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide * Gas temperatures * Total heat loss from walls, ceiling, and floor * Total heat loss from the door and mechanical exhaust vent. This report includes a description of the measurement methods and experimental results for Tests conducted as part of the International Fire Model Benchmarking and Validation Exercise #3. Theexperimental data itself is attached as thirty files, two for each test, which are available electronically to accompany this report. The data can be used as a comparison with fire models as part of the international benchmark exercise.
