Book Synopsis Unconventional Success by : David F. Swensen
Download or read book Unconventional Success written by David F. Swensen and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2005-08-09 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Pioneering Portfolio Management shows individuals how to avoid the for-profit mutual fund industry and get better returns on their money. In Unconventional Success, investment legend and bestselling author David F. Swensen offers incontrovertible evidence that the for-profit mutual fund industry consistently fails the average investor. From excessive management fees to the frequent “churning” of portfolios, the relentless pursuit of profits by mutual fund management companies harms individual clients. Perhaps most destructive of all are the hidden schemes that limit investor choice and reduce returns, including pay-to-play product-placement fees, stale-price trading scams, soft-dollar kickbacks, and 12b-1 distribution charges. Even if investors manage to emerge unscathed from an encounter with the profit-seeking mutual fund industry, individuals face the likelihood of self-inflicted pain. The common practice of selling losers and buying winners (and doing both too often) damages portfolio returns and increases tax liabilities, delivering a one-two punch to investor aspirations. In short: Nearly insurmountable hurdles confront ordinary investors. Swensen’s solution: A contrarian investment alternative that promotes well-diversified, equity-oriented, market-mimicking portfolios that reward investors who exhibit the courage to stay the course. Swensen suggests implementing his nonconformist proposal with investor-friendly, not-for-profit investment companies such as Vanguard and TIAA-CREF. By avoiding actively managed funds and employing client-oriented mutual fund managers, investors create the preconditions for investment success. Bottom line? Unconventional Success provides the guidance and financial know-how for improving the personal investor’s financial future. “Reveals why the mutual fund industry as a whole does a disservice to the individual investor.” —Booklist “What he has to say is worth listening to.” —The New York Times

Book Synopsis 2023 Review of Resource Adequacy of the Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust, Resilience and Sustainability Trust, and Debt Relief Trusts by : International Monetary Fund. Legal Dept.
Download or read book 2023 Review of Resource Adequacy of the Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust, Resilience and Sustainability Trust, and Debt Relief Trusts written by International Monetary Fund. Legal Dept. and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2023-04-26 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides an integrated perspective across the Trusts of the Fund. It is the first annual review that combines discussion of the adequacy of the resources of the Fund’s Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust (PRGT) and debt relief trusts, including the Catastrophe Containment and Relief Trust (CCRT), with that of the Resilience and Sustainability Trust (RST). The review of the PRGT assesses recent developments for lending demand, fundraising, and interest rates and compares them to the baseline projections underpinning the July 2021 reforms. A multi-pronged strategy is proposed to address identified strains on PRGT finances while minimizing negative effects for PRGT borrowers and preserving the confidence of PRGT lenders. On the recently established RST, this paper reports its fundraising progress; discusses demand developments and outlook for RST financing; assesses adequacy of loan resources and reserves; and examines, in view of increases in the SDR interest rate, the implications of adopting an interest rate cap at 21⁄4 percent for the lowest income group eligible for RST borrowing.
Book Synopsis Canadian Annual Review of Politics and Public Affairs 2002 by : David Mutimer
Download or read book Canadian Annual Review of Politics and Public Affairs 2002 written by David Mutimer and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2008-03-08 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Both at home and abroad, the events of 2002 contrasted significantly with those of the previous year, something for which most Canadians could be extremely grateful. To no ones surprise, however, the year was dominated by the issues that had captivated the worlds attention at the end of 2001: the attacks on the United States and the subsequent war on terror declared by the Bush Administration. Canada had chosen to stand shoulder to shoulder with its southern neighbour in response to those attacks, and in 2002 the meaning of that commitment became clear as Canada entered into full-scale combat operations in Afghanistan, suffered its first casualties, and ended the year torn over whether to follow the United States should it choose to take its war to Iraq.On the home front, a battle of an altogether different magnitude reached a turning point with the seeming resolution of the long-running struggle between Prime Minister Jean Chrtien and Minister of Finance Paul Martin even though, by years end, it was by no means clear who had actually won. Similarly, a number of the consequences of the 9/11 attacks remained unresolved. Bill C-17 had not been passed; Ottawa software engineer, Maher Arar languished in a Syrian jail where he had been sent by the United States; and the war drums were beating loudly around Iraq. Continuing in the standard for which it has been acclaimed, the Canadian Annual Review of Politics and Public Affairs 2002 presents detailed analyses of events that have come to define our nation in recent years."
