This book was released on 2012-09-22 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goals of the 10th International Space Conference on “Protection of Materials and Structures from Space Environment” ICPMSE-10J, since its inception in 1992, have been to facilitate exchanges between members of the various engineering and science disciplines involved in the development of space materials, including aspects of LEO, GEO and Deep Space environments, ground-based qualification, and in-flight experiments and lessons learned from operational vehicles that are closely interrelated to disciplines of the atmospheric sciences, solar-terrestrial interactions and space life sciences. The knowledge of environmental conditions on and around the Moon, Mars, Venus and the low Earth orbit as well as other possible candidates for landing such as asteroids have become an important issue, and protecting both hardware and human life from the effects of space environments has taken on a new meaning in light of the increased interest in space travel and colonization of other planets. And while many material experiments have been carried out on the ground and in open space in the last 50 years (LDEF, MEEP, SARE, MISSE, AOP, DSPSE, ESEM, EURECA, HST, MDIM, MIS, MPID, MPAC and SEED), many questions regarding the environmental impact of space on materials remain either poorly understood or unanswered. The coming generations of scientists will have to continue this work and tackle new challenges, continuing to build the level of confidence humans will need to continue the colonization of space. It is hoped that the proceedings of the ICPMSE-10J presented in this book will constitute a small contribution to doing so.
Book Synopsis NASA/SDIO Space Environmental Effects on Materials Workshop, Part 1 by :
Download or read book NASA/SDIO Space Environmental Effects on Materials Workshop, Part 1 written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization (SDIO) cosponsored a workshop on Space Environmental Effects on Materials at the NASA Langley Research Center from June 28 to July 1, 1988. The joint workshop was designed to inform participants of the present state of knowledge regarding space environmental effects on materials and to identify knowledge gaps that prevent informed decisions on the best use of advanced materials in space for long-duration NASA and SDIO missions. Establishing priorities for future ground-based and space-based materials research was a major goal of the workshop. The end product of the workshop was an assessment of the current state-of-the-art in space environmental effects on materials in order to develop a national plan for spaceflight experiments. The workshop was intended for participation by expert applied researchers, systems technologists, and program managers for spacecraft systems.
Book Synopsis Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences by : Wade H. Shafer
Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Synopsis Protection of Materials and Structures from Space Environment by : Jacob I. Kleiman
Download or read book Protection of Materials and Structures from Space Environment written by Jacob I. Kleiman and published by AIP Conference Proceedings / M. This book was released on 2009-01-15 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conference proceedings are discussing the latest developments in the area of the effects of the space environment on materials and structures and the ways to prevent and/or reduce them. The effects of various space environment factors like atomic oxygen, vacuum ultraviolet radiation, charging, micrometeoroids, meteoroid showers, etc. on materials and structures in various space conditions are discussed. In addition the ways to prevent these effects or reduce them through protection by coatings or modification of affected surfaces are considered in the book. The discussions on development of predictive models of material erosion that will allow the materials engineers and designers of future spacecraft to evaluate materials' behavior is continued from the past meetings.

Book Synopsis The Effects of a Simulated Space Environment on the Properties of Elastomers by : Z. T. OSSEFORT
Download or read book The Effects of a Simulated Space Environment on the Properties of Elastomers written by Z. T. OSSEFORT and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The principle factors of concern in space environmental (in so far as effects on materialsARE CONCERNED) are believed to be: (1) extremely high (approaching absolute) vacuum, (2) exposure to high and low temperatures, (3) actinic solar radiation, (4) other forms of high energy radiation such as cosmic radiation undiminished by atmospheric penetration, a d (5) particle bombardment from tiny meteorites. Initial studies on elastomers (for sealing members in these systems) were made in a temperature range up to 800 F while exposed to pressures in the range from 10 to the -5th to 10 to the -6th power mm of Hg. One of the most striking conclusions to be made is the stability of organic materials when subjected to these low pressures. Only very small losses of material were observed and these were almost completely due to known volatile constituents. (Author).
