Book excerpt: This document reviews recent literature regarding the usage of biodiesel and biodiesel blend fuel in on road applications. The report describes some of the principal characteristics of biodiesel and usage experience in and near the State of Montana. Several studies are summarized regarding biodiesel's effects on engine performance and warranties. Storage, handling and transportation requirements are also discussed. The emissions related impacts of biodiesel on several pollutants are quantified, along with potential effects of these impacts on the state and vehicle users within the state. The legislative environment regarding biodiesel and existing motor fuel taxes, at a Federal level and in other states, is reviewed. Considerations regarding fuel cost and domestic productive capacity are discussed. The report concludes that most technical questions regarding biodiesel appear to be satisfactorily answered; the primary obstacles limiting broader biodiesel implementation relate to cost and user acceptance.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of Biodiesel Fuel by : Christopher Strong
Download or read book Evaluation of Biodiesel Fuel written by Christopher Strong and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes phase 2 of a Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) research project examining technical issues related to the usage of biodiesel in the state. The results of a small scale field test involving the use of 20% biodiesel (B20) fuel in select MDT maintenance vehicles are presented. Operations and maintenance experience were generally positive, and MDT personnel were receptive to using biodiesel in the future. Based on that experience, this report reviews other aspects that may influence the state biodiesel policy, including increasing use of finer rating engine fuel filters, microbial contamination, and potential evasion of biodiesel fuel by long haul motor carriers. Biodiesel production aspects are examined in detail, especially feedstock availability, to determine the potential for development of a biodiesel industry in Montana. Federal policies and laws enacted by other states are reviewed, in order to better understand external factors that may affect the biodiesel industry of Montana. Several policy alternatives are presented, with their strengths and weaknesses subjectively analyzed. Finally, several avenues for future research are identified that may help the state in determining future biodiesel policy.

Book Synopsis Biofuels from Algae by : Kuan-Yeow Show
Download or read book Biofuels from Algae written by Kuan-Yeow Show and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-08-08 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensive effort is being made globally to develop various biofuels as an inexhaustible and renewable energy source. Biofuels are viewed as promising alternatives to conventional fossil fuels because they have the potential to eliminate major environmental problems such as global warming and climate change created by fossil fuels. Among the still-developing biofuel technologies, biodiesel production from algae offers a good prospect for large-scale practical use, considering the fact that algae are capable of producing much more yield than other biofuels such as corn and soybean crops. Although research on algae-based biofuel is still in its developing stage, extensive work on laboratory- and pilot-scale algae-harvesting systems with promising prospects has been reported. This chapter presents a discussion of the literature review of recent advances in algal biomass harvesting. The chapter focuses on stability and separability of algae and algae-harvesting methods. Challenges and prospects of algae harvesting are also outlined. The review aims to provide useful information for future development of efficient and commercially viable algal biodiesel production.
