Book excerpt: "This report presents an analysis of noise from complete aerobatic routines for a range of aircraft modeled with the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Integrated Noise Model (INM) Version 7.0c. The project has three main objectives. The first objective is to model noise from complete aerobatic routines for a range of aircraft in INM. The second is to compare INM modeled and previously measured aircraft noise from complete aerobatic routines for a range of aircraft. The third is to model the noise from up to 50 daily aerobatic routines for a range of aircraft in INM."--Executive Summary (p. [1]).

Book excerpt: At the request of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Transportation Research Board (TRB) organized and managed a two-day invitational workshop on aircraft noise modeling at the J. Erik Jonsson Center of the National Academy of Sciences in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, in May 1996. The invitees were drawn from Federal Government agencies, aircraft manufacturers and consulting firms. The purposes of this workshop were to review the present state of noise modeling technology, with special emphasis on the FAA Integrated Noise Model (INM), and to obtain information and guidance on the future direction of noise modeling. This Circular summarizes the workshop proceedings. It is organized in the following sections: Overview; Current Status; Problems and Issues; Summary of Action Items and Priorities; Appendix A - Workshop Participants; Appendix B - Agenda; Appendix C - Opening Remarks by T.L. Conner, FAA; Appendix D - Agencies, Organizations, and User Groups Concerned with Aircraft Noise Modeling; and Appendix E - Glossary of Terms.

Book excerpt: The FAA's Integrated Noise Model (INM) relies on the methods of the SAE AIR-1845 'Procedure for the Calculation of Airplane Noise in the Vicinity of Airports' issued in 1986. Simplifying assumptions for aerodynamics and noise calculation were made in the SAE standard and the INM based on the limited computing power commonly available then. The key objectives of this study are 1) to test some of those assumptions against Boeing source data, and 2) to automate the manufacturer's methods of data development to enable the maintenance of a consistent INM database over time. These new automated tools were used to generate INM database submissions for six airplane types:737-700 (CFM56-7 24K), 767-400ER (CF6-80C2BF), 777-300 (Trent 892), 717-200 (BR7 15), 757-300 (RR535E4B), and the 737-800 (CFM56-7 26K).Shepherd, Kevin P. Book excerpt: The FAA Integrated Noise Model computer program INMPROG has been made available to the public for computing a variety of noise indices in the vicinity of airports. One component of this program package is a data library which provides both acoustic and operational data for certain standard aircraft types and flight procedures. This paper presents the data used to construct the supplied program library. It thus provides the information needed to reproduce a particular analysis. Further, it provides a necessary reference point for the user who specifies his own operational procedures. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The FAA Integrated Noise Model (INM) provides a conceptually simple method for characterizing aircraft noise near airports. It includes a determination of the total time that the sound level exceeds six different thresholds, and also the equivalent A-weighted sound level, L sub eq, and the day-night average sound level, L sub dn, at a number of points surrounding a particular airport. Evening and nighttime exposures are broken out separately. Thus, several methodologies are integrated into a single model which provides a very complete picture of the noise environment. The computer program INMPROG is available to calculate all of the above information and to present it in tabular form. Plotter output is also generated, for contours of equal exposures to levels above 85 dBA. Equal L sub dn contours may be produced instead, at the user's option. This manual is intended to guide the user of the model through the preparation of data required by this program. A description of the airport and its operations must be assembled onto data forms. A separate chapter specifies the punched card formats, so that the punching of cards is distinct from the collection of data. Technical appendices provide the information required for a computer center to bring up and run the program. (Author).

Book excerpt: The Federal Aviation Administration's Integrated Noise Model (INM) is a series of computer programs designed to estimate environmental noise levels in the vicinity of an airport. As part of MITRE's efforts to validate INM computations for the FAA, a comparison was made between arrival and departure profiles contained in the INM data base and those observed in actual operations at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. ARTS-III radar data were used to determine actual altitude and velocities of aircraft at various distances from the runway during arrival and departure operations. This report presents the results of the comparison.

This book was released on 2019-01-18 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Aviation Administration s (FAA) Integrated Noise Model (INM) employs a prediction methodology that relies on corrected net thrust as the sole correlating parameter between aircraft and engine operating states and aircraft noise. Thus aircraft noise measured for one set of atmospheric and aircraft operating conditions is assumed to be applicable to all other conditions as long as the corrected net thrust remains constant. This hypothesis is investigated under two primary assumptions: (1) the sound field generated by the aircraft is dominated by jet noise, and (2) the sound field generated by the jet flow is adequately described by Lighthill s theory of noise generated by turbulence.
