Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to highway environmental engineers, noise analysts, design engineers, maintenance personnel, planners, administrators, and others responsible for the design, selection, and maintenance of noise barriers or other traffic noise abatement policies. Information is provided on current state practice associated with noise abatement techniques and on the various products that are used. This synthesis describes the state of the art with respect to traffic noise abatement procedures, especially noise barriers. This report of the Transportation Research Board provides information on the design, construction and maintenance of both new (Type I) and retrofit ( Type II) noise barriers. The design elements that are addressed include materials, the selection process, service life, foundations, drainage, aesthetics, and safety. The construction section covers technical problems related to surface effects, durability, snow damage, and costs. Other noise abatement measures such as insulation and highway design alternatives are also addressed. The issue of public demand and availability funding is included, and recommendations are made to improve the situation.

This report presents the HITEC evaluation plan for U.S. Gypsum's Sight and Sound Screen. The Sight and Sound Screen is a post-and-panel wall system designed to act as a sight and sound barrier for highways and as a privacy system for residential and commercial property owners. The HITEC evaluation will measure the performance of the barrier against the criteria presented in this report, which reflect the needs of the highway community. Although this evaluation plan was tailored to one product, as a service to state and local transportation officials the report was expanded to provide guidelines that can be adapted for use with other types of sound wall systems.

Book excerpt: This guide which was produced in an effort to consolidate and disseminate research information relating to traffic noise and develop guidelines for the abatement of traffic generated noise through highway design procedures and techniques, reviews the nature of noise and presents a systems approach to the attack of noise problems and its interrelated aspects. Some insight is provided into the problems faced by highway planners and designers and remedial measures are presented for noise reduction. Procedures are outlined which aid in conducting noise studies. Design features are described which aid in obtaining attenuation when studies indicate such measures are desirable and feasible. Several procedures for noise measurement are included in an appendix.

Book excerpt: As new and existing U.S. residential areas and high volume highways continue to intermingle, traffic noise abatement procedures continue to be important. This study investigated the acoustic effectiveness, public acceptance, and structural requirements of various designs and types of sound barriers. In addition, the acoustic effectiveness of a prototype sound barrier is reported. Results are presented on the acoustic effectiveness from in situ measurements of one cement bonded composite panel barrier and four precast concrete, two plywood, two glued-laminated, and three post and panel barriers. The research on public acceptance of sound barriers focused on the perception of visual compatibility. Based on results from semantic-differential and individual ratings, wood and concrete barrier designs were perceived to have favored gbsruralgcs qualities. Data collected during the research on acoustic effectiveness and public acceptance were used to develop structural requirements and construction details for a prototype wood sound barrier. The prototype wood sound barrier provided insertion losses of 15 dB or greater, exceeding the 10-dB acceptable performance for a highway sound barrier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this guide is to familiarize the designer with the complex problem of highway traffic noise. Following a brief introduction, a review is presented of the nature of the noise problem. Attacking the traffic noise problem with its interrelated aspects is presented as a systems approach--a sharing of responsibility for noise reduction. The guide provides some insight into the problems faced by highway planners and designers and presents remedial measures for noise reduction. Procedures are outlined to aid in conducting noise studies. When noise studies indicate abatement measures may be reasonable and feasible, design features are presented to aid in obtaining cost-effective abatement.

The report presents an overview of the suggested noise prediction methodology, which is a four step process that includes approximating noise impacts using a nomograph procedure to determine noise levels associated with given traffic and site characteristics; refining these predictions by more accurate representation of design parameters and use of a computer program that is able to plot as well as calculate noise impact; introducing appropriate noise-control options and evaluate them, using a noise barrier nomograph solution; lastly, selected options are fully evaluated using the computer program.

Book excerpt: This handbook is intended to be a tool for use by the highway designer to aid in the design of noise abatement barriers. It provides a means of defining the geometric configuration of a barrier to produce a desired noise reduction, and also provides a design evaluation and selection procedure in which specific barriers are detailed, and then evaluated in terms of cost, acoustical characteristics, and non-acoustical characteristics (such as durability, ease of maintenance, safety, aesthetics and community acceptance). This handbook guides the designer in the preparation of a design which he believes will be accepted by the community and perform as desired both acoustically and non-acoustically, for reasonable cost.
